Drummer Peter Donald achieved prominence as a member of John Abercrombie's pivotal quartet of the late '70s, but he dropped out of public view in the ensuing decades. This disc by the trio 3Prime marks Donald's return to the stage. The reclusive drummer is joined by bassist Abraham Laboriel and pianist Tom Ranier for a creative live set recorded at Rocco in Bel Air, CA. (It's significant that Donald's like-minded fellow drummer and friend Peter Erskine produced the outing and released it on his own Fuzzy Music label.) Laboriel and Donald each contribute a tune -- the lilting 12/8 "Moment Out of Time" and the unorthodox funk/blues workout "Snippy," respectively. Ranier pitches in with the challenging, swinging "Step Outside" and the dramatic finale, "Teach Me Your Paths." In addition, the three present their take on Jobim's "Jet Samba," Frank Rosolino's "Blue Daniel," and the well-known standards "You Stepped Out of a Dream" and "All the Things You Are." Donald's spacious and inventive drumming perfectly frames the robust efforts of Laboriel and Ranier, both of whom are career studio musicians as well as virtuosic jazzers. The word "folk-rock" seems to mean something different to everyone, and many fans might find Dream Babes, Vol. 5: Folk Rock and Faithfull, a compilation of 22 woman-sung 1965-1969 tracks to be more accurately pegged as "folk-rock-influenced pop/rock" than "folk-rock." Even if it's more featherweight than the Byrds (or for that matter the Mamas & the Papas), it's a pretty interesting and fun collection of rarities, most of them sung by British femmes and produced in the U.K. (though a couple of Australians sneak in, as does Jackie DeShannon's "Don't Turn Your Back on Me," recorded by the Californian in England). There's nothing here by Marianne Faithfull, despite the sly use of her name in the title. But the wispier and folkier tracks here certainly bear her influence, including those ...

This 2005 ESP-Disk reissue brings together tenor saxophonist Albert Ayler's first two recordings for the ESP label on one CD, in chronological, but reverse, release order. Prophecy was Ayler's first session with the label, and he was accompanied by bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Sunny Murray. It was recorded in June of 1964 live at the Cellar Café. This is the early period of Ayler exploring his march-time rhythms and gospel melodies that became the frameworks for his particularly iconoclastic vanguard explorations into free improvisation. There are two versions of "Ghosts" here, as well as two of "Spirits" and the title track, tunes that would bear his signature in performance and on other recordings. Bells was originally issued as a one-sided LP consisting of a nearly 20-minute version of the title piece. Recorded in January of 1965, the band had changed to include Lewis Worrell on bass, Charles Tyler on alto saxophone, and Albert's brother Donald Ayler on trumpet. As a package, Bells and Prophecy make for a highly intense, utterly engaging, and even awe-inspiring listen. ~ Thom Jurek
Combining two of his best ESP recordings on one CD, the 1998 compilation of 1965's Bells and 1964's Prophecy is the tenor saxophonist at the peak of his powers. Bells, originally released as an idiosyncratic one-sided LP, is a live set featuring Albert Ayler, his trumpeter brother Donald Ayler (this was their first recording together), alto saxophonist and ESP labelmate Charles Tyler, bassist Lewis Worrell, and drummer Sunny Murray, recorded live at New York's Town Hall. Although banded as a single track (and confusingly given the same title as an unrelated Ayler composition), Bells actually consists of a 20-minute medley of three Ayler compositions, the incantatory "Spiritual Bells," "Holy Ghost," and the brief coda "No Name," with the middle piece the primary focus. The playing is positively ferocious, with all three reed and horn players swinging from wild solos to some even more out ensemble playing. In comparison, the trio date Prophecy sounds almost normal. The four tracks (plus a second variation of Ayler's early signature piece, "Ghosts") are, oddly, the same that appeared on Ayler's ESP debut, Spiritual Unity. It's safe to say that the most "tributized" gentleman in the realm of hard rock/heavy metal has been Ozzy Osbourne. Over the years, a continuous stream of releases by other artists covering either Black Sabbath or Ozzy's solo years has hit the racks, and the "2006 edition" was Flying High Again: The World's Greatest Tribute to Ozzy Osbourne.
