With Live at Yoshi's, his 20th recording as a leader and third release for the Blue Note label, the legendary Pat Martino has come full circle. Accompanied by Joey DeFrancesco on Hammond B-3 and Billy Hart on drums, the hard bop and funky soul-jazz of this trio are sure to please enthusiasts of the guitar, organ, and drum trio. Martino, heir to Wes Montgomery's warm, bluesy guitar style, plays eight great compositions, including two great extended versions of the classic Miles Davis compositions "All Blues" and "Blue in Green." On "All Blues," creative guitar voice plays the melody with soulful interpretations and subtle musical resonance. Martino's version of "Blue in Green" creates a world of melancholy and the guitarist plays his guitar with the same sweet sadness as Miles did with the support of DeFrancesco's organ solo adding additional shades of emotion. The songs selected for this "live" performance recording also appear on previously recorded Martino projects, including his 1970 Desperado album and his 1998 Stone Blue CD. However, listeners now receive the benefit of having the set performance available in real time. From the sound of the audience on Live at Yoshi's, the guitar sage's head-spinning dexterity and cool tones on "Catch" are more spirited than ever, and after listening to this CD, you'll be inclined to agree. ~ Paula Edelstein
Pat Martino's career has been marked by serious health problems. However, with each passing year, he continues to fight the odds and make forward-looking statements in jazz. LIVE AT YOSHI'S is no exception to this. Throughout the years, Martino fans have come to expect blindingly fast, virtuosic bop solos from him. These he delivers on all eight tracks. In fact, we hear inspired, spontaneous performances by all three musicians on this disc.
This live 2000 concert date sees Martino in great form. His playing is heartfelt and, as usual, he dazzles the crowd with outstanding harmonic ingenuity. Joined by organ phenom Joey DeFrancesco and veteran drummer Billy Hart, Martino performs a variety of tunes including Miles Davis's "All Blues" and the lush Bill Evans/Miles Davis Ballad "Blue in Green." Uptempo burners such as Sonny Rollins' "Oleo" and Martino's own "Catch" display the true improvisational prowess of this jazz power trio.Entertainment Weekly (7/13/01, p.87) - "...The agenda is elemental: Wind 'em up and watch 'em go...Martino's lines are fast and clean..." - Rating: B+
Down Beat (10/01, pp.68,70) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "...He is clearly at home before this very live crowd, playing a ton of notes to both originals and standards..."

Liner Note Author: Everette Harp.
On FIRST LOVE, contemporary jazz saxophonist and composer Everette Harp moves deeper into the space he addressed on 2007's excellent MY INSPIRATION. Produced by George Duke, the meld of acoustic and electric instruments here is perfectly balanced. Melodic and harmonic structures are much more complex and don't always fit the C-jazz cookie-cutter mold. Check his original "The Council of Nicea," one of the most satisfying things here. Harp's tenor is accompanied by James Genus' acoustic bass, and some spot-on breaks by Terri Lyne Carrington, a beautiful bluesy, hard bop trumpet solo by Michael "Patches" Stewart, and Lenny Castro's hand percussion. Directing the band is Duke on Fender Rhodes ...

Dust To Dust
Butch Morris Dust To Dust CD  (1991) (Import)

Live At Yoshi's
CD $16.55  Audio Samples
Personnel: Lawrence D. "Butch" Morris (conductor); J.A. Deane (trombone, electronics); John Purcell (oboe); Vickey Bodner (English horn); Marty Ehrlich (clarinet); Janet Grice (bassoon); Jason Hwang (violin); Zeena Parkins (harp); Brian Carrott (vibraphone); Myra Melford (piano); Wayne Horvitz (keyboards, electronics); Jean-Paul Bourelly (guitar); Andrew Cyrille (drums).
Recorded at Skyline Studios, New York City from November 19-20, 1990. Includes liner notes by Butch Morris.
Lawrence "Butch" Morris' conduction technique, a form of directed improvisation whereby musicians follow a variety of live hand signals by the conductor to shape and reshape both notated and non-notated music, has not taken on the revered status of Ornette Coleman's harmolodic method of free improvisation, but has produced equally exciting music. In fact, mirroring the keen mix of composition and improvisation found in both Anthony Braxton's and John Zorn's work, Morris' relatively structured music at times surpasses Coleman's more free-form output. If his conceptions were amateurish, Morris' "songs" would pale in comparison to any of the high-end work Coleman has produced, but, as is the case with Dust to Dust, the pieces come out sounding whole and refined, enhanced greatly by a variety of impromptu musical twists. Enlisting a stellar cast of 12 musicians including, among others, drummer Andrew Cyrille, pianist Myra Melford, harp player Zeena Parkins, clarinetist Marty Ehrlich, and keyboard player Wayne Horvitz, Morris works through a varied program of seven numbers, mixing electronic and acoustic elements to produce constantly ...

Prog rock circa the early 21st century was quite a different beast than when the genre first appeared on the scene in the 1970s. Originally, the style was much more gritty sounding, and while there was an exorbitant amount of extended jams/solos, the playing wasn't always virtuosic (in other words, a flubbed note or two wasn't a cardinal sin). But later on, the production of prog records became increasingly sterile, with the instrumentalists never ever dropping a note. In fact, the superhuman playing seemed ...

Personnel: Ras Myrhdak (vocals); Daniel Thompson, Nambo Robinson, Dean Frazer, Uziah "Sticky" Thompson.
Ras Myrhdak came to the attention of producers Lynford "Fatta" Marshall and Andreas "Brotherman" Christophersen when his single "Blazer" hit the top of the Jamaican charts. Brotherman consequently brought him into the studio for his full-length debut, a neo-roots exercise featuring modern-sounding old-school beats played by such A-list studio sessioneers as Horsemouth Wallace, Sticky Thompson, Dean Fraser, and Nambo Robinson. Ras Myrhdak alternates between singing and chatting in the time-honored "singjay" style, an approach that yields a nice variety of sounds on tracks like "Only for a Time" and the soaring "Trod It Alone." Although ...
