"Clint Eastwood" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group.
What do you get when you combine Damon Albarn, singer for Britpop superstars Blur, with hip-hop producer Dan The Automator? Gorillaz, silly! Albarn takes a busman's holiday and avails himself of the opportunity to take the kind of sonic risks one would be unlikely to find on a Blur album. This isn't hip-hop or dance music per se, though "Rock the House" is a bona-fide party rap tune, and Dan The Automator adds plenty of hip-hop elements and trip-hop beats throughout.
Ultimately, GORILLAZ is occupied by Albarn's arch, twisted pop vision filtered through a dizzying array of electronic sounds and studio manipulations. There are some interesting stylistic experiments, too, as on the Latin-style "Latin Simone," which features a guest vocal from none other than Cuban legend Ibrahim Ferrer, and "Slow Country," which, despite its title, is an excursion into the atmospheric land of dub reggae. This is a far cry from Britpop--imagine Blur in a sonic kaleidoscope. And then try in vain to imagine either of the Gallagher brothers attempting anything close to this.

Gorillaz Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews The Gorillaz Despite the fact that the lyrics are a little hard to make out, the Gorillaz offer up music and emotion the way it should be. Still the Best GoRiLLaz Album! After hearing this CD I was a little disappointed in thier second album called "Demon Days". This CD(being thier first album)is amazing! It contains a lot of different styles of music, which is something that Demon Days unfortunately did not live up to... If your looking for something good to listen to, I suggest purchasing this CD. If you like the GoRiLLaz as much as I do you won't be let down! Submitted by claymaker64 (Rosemount, MN, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Gorillaz album
$11.29 "Short Circuit" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. "One More Time" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording.
In 1997, this French electro-dance duo made a huge intercontinental splash with its debut album, HOMEWORK, mixing disco, house, funk, techno, and more. While Daft Punk's second recording still focuses on the maximum accessibility that earned its debut such high marks, there's less of an obvious focus on pop hooks. Irony and house beats are the order of the day, and an eclectic thread runs throughout DISCOVERY.
"Digital Love" sounds like the theme to a '70s sitcom as realized by the Buggles. "Nightvision" is a mellow, wordless, Quiet Storm-meets-Eno soundscape, while in an interpolation sure to gain plenty of attention, "Superheroes" marries a Barry Manilow sample to an unrelenting house beat. Ultimately, DISCOVERY is less of a mission statement than its predecessor, but no less danceable or listenable.

| | Zero 7 Simple Things CD (2001)
Gorillaz CD music
$14.05 After a number of singles and EPs, British electronica duo Zero 7 made their full-length debut with 2001's SIMPLE THINGS, an inspired fusion of loungey electronica a la the French duo Air and the more assertive trip-hop of Massive Attack and Tricky. At its heart, SIMPLE THINGS has all the same elements that many similar records have had ever since the early days of Soul II Soul: subtle and inventive sampling, R&B diva vocals, Kraftwerk-like synthesizer chills, and tasteful beats and bass lines to tie the whole thing together. The difference is that Sam Hardaker and Henry Binns, the core of Zero 7, keep those ingredients in precisely the correct proportions.
The American edition of SIMPLE THINGS adds two songs, "Salt Water Sound" and "Spinning."
Additional personnel includes: Mozez, Sophie Barker, Sia Furler, Philani Mothers (vocals); Phil Thornally (guitar, bass); Dedi Madden, Allan Simpson (guitar); Sally Herbert (violin); The Brilliant Strings (strings); Simon Elms (trumpet); Max Beesley (Fender Rhodes piano); Pete Trotman (bass); Jeremy Stacey (drums); Jenny Arrel (percussion).

| | Gorillaz G-Sides CD (2002)
Gorillaz music CDs
$11.35 Hot on the heels of the unexpected success of hip-hop collective Gorillaz's debut album, which garnered a Grammy nomination, comes this enhanced batch of B-sides, unreleased material, remixes, and rarities. With a who's who of band members including Blur's Damon Albarn, Cibo Matto's Miho Hatori, left-field rapper Del Tha Funky Homosapien providing the initial juice under the auspices of uber-producer Dan The Automator, G SIDES benefits from a number of respected remixers.
Soulchild pumps up the groove quotient on the already slammin' "19-2000" while the Wiseguys import plenty of harder beats and chanting choruses into the House Of Wisdom remix of the same song. Even the hit "Clint Eastwood" ends up refitted with a rapid-fire lyrical flow on the Phi Life Cypher Version. Elsewhere, Gorillaz monkey around with jangly synths throughout the ethereal "Faust," tabla-fueled rap on "The Sounder," and assay an esoteric, soulful mantra on "12D3." The nine cuts featured on G SIDES are a mere rest stop on Gorillaz's rambunctious ride into the maw of 21st century pop music.

| | Coldplay Rush Of Blood To The Head CD (2002)
Gorillaz songs
$11.35 "Clocks" won the 2004 Grammy Award for Record Of The Year. A RUSH OF BLOOD TO THE HEAD won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. "In My Place" won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
In 2000, Coldplay appeared seemingly out of nowhere and immediately advanced to the head of the Britpop class in the UK, while easily outdistancing the likes of Oasis and Blur in terms of US popularity. The most striking thing was that they did it with zero attitude and unassuming, melodic tunes humbly presented with a minimum of fuss and a maximum of memorability. That trend continues on the band's second album, A RUSH OF BLOOD TO THE HEAD.
There's little stylistic alteration from PARACHUTES here, which is just fine, considering how enormously and instantly appealing that style is. While Travis, Elbow, and other entrants in the Britpop sweepstakes offer a not dissimilar sound, none can communicate with the honest immediacy and directness of Coldplay. Part of the key, apart from melodies so ridiculously catchy as to make Belle & Sebastian sound like Public Image Ltd., may be their working-class sense of all-for-one proletarianism (though not in the breast-beating Oasis manner). Even on "God Put a Smile Upon Your Face," when Chris Martin goes so far as to offer a few boastful phrases, the ultimate sentiment that comes across is the refrain "your guess is good as mine."
Recorded between 2001 & 2002.
Personnel: Chris Martin (vocals, guitar); Jon Buckland (guitar); Chris Tombling, Susan Dench, Richard George, Laura Melhewish, Anne Lines, Leo Payne, Peter Lale, Audrey Riley (strings); Will Champion (drums, percussion).

| | Gorillaz Demon Days CD (2005)
Gorillaz album
$11.45 On the second full-length Gorillaz outing, DEMON DAYS, mastermind Damon Albarn (Blur) parts company with Dan the Automator and opts for a collaboration with Danger Mouse, the DJ most renowned for his GREY ALBUM mash-up of the Beatles' WHITE ALBUM and Jay-Z's BLACK ALBUM. Although this dynamic collection isn't a radical departure from its predecessor (Artwork by Jamie Hewlett? Check. A small army of guest stars? Check.), DEMON DAYS injects the party-ready Gorillaz aesthetic with a brooding sensibility that's immediately apparent on the zombie-movie-sampling "Intro." In fact, a morbid sentiment abounds, as evidenced by many songs, including "Last Living Souls" and "Every Planet We Reach Is Dead."
Even though Albarn has weighty issues occupying his thoughts, he hasn't forgotten how to boogie, as revealed by the slinky "Kids with Guns" (featuring backing vocals by Neneh Cherry) and the funky "Feel Good Inc." (with De La Soul), which sounds like the slacker cousin of Outkast's "Hey Ya!" The ominous "November Has Come" (featuring MF Doom) and the bizarre "Fire Coming Out of the Monkey's Head" (with a spoken-word performance by actor Dennis Hopper) round out this eclectic pop/rock/hip-hop offering, which equals, if not exceeds, the first Gorillaz disc.

| | Carole King Collection CDs (2006)
Gorillaz music CDs
$21.69 The Collection includes 3 separate albums: REALLY ROSIE (1975)/MUSIC (1971)/TAPESTRY (1971).
This is an Australian compilation of some of the best work by Carole King. While it is represented and contains all classic tracks, it is rather generic in its presentation and leaves so much stuff out ("So Far Away," "It's Too Late," and "You've Got a Friend" are all missing!) it's ridiculous. This could easily have been a 12- to 15-cut collection with time to spare, so one has to wonder what the producers of this comp were smoking when they assembled it. For the money there are many compilations out there that leave this one in the dust. The star rating is for the music, not the presentation. ~ Thom Jurek
This three-pack collects some of Carole King's finest moments from the '70s: her thoughtful, playful Really Rosie, the soundtrack to Maurice Sendak's 1975 animated TV special; 1971's Music; and King's definitive album, the classic Tapestry. Between the three discs, this set features some of King's biggest and best-known songs, including "I Feel the Earth Move," "It's Too Late," "It's Going to Take Some Time," "Brother, Brother" and "Really Rosie." This collection is a convenient way to pick up some of the best work by one of America's definitive singer/songwriters. ~ Heather Phares
With Collection, Sony repackages three of Carole King's finest 1970s recordings, for sale in one budget-priced box. Chief among them is the classic Tapestry, one of the biggest selling pop albums of all time, and for good reason as its timeless tracks continue to inspire and edify 30 years after its initial release. Also in the package are Really Rosie and the sublime Music. This is an excellent place to start for anyone getting interested in King for the first time. While Tapestry is the clear standout, the other titles in the box will underscore her particular genius for both lyric and melody, as well as her truly lovely and enigmatic singing voice. ~ Thom Jurek
