Avantasia's The Metal Opera is the concept album masterpiece created by Edguy vocalist Tobias Sammet. Features members of some of the leading power metal acts like Helloween, Gamma Ray, Stratovarius, Virgin Steele, Rhapsody and, of course, Edguy. 13 tracks. 2001 release.
Avantasia includes: Tobias Sammet, Kai Hansen, Timo Tolkki, David DeFeis, Rob Rock, Andre Matos, Sharon Den Adel (vocals); Henjo Richter, Jens Ludwig (guitar); Markus Grosskopf (bass); Alex Holzwarth (drums). Personnel: David Defeis, Ralf Zdiarstek, Kai Hansen, Andre Matos, Timo Tolkki, Tobias Sammet (vocals); Henjo Richter (guitar); Norman Meiritz (acoustic guitar); Frank Tischer (piano); Markus Grosskopf (bass guitar); Alex Holzwarth (drums). Audio Mixer: Mikko Karmila. Recording information: Finnovox-Studios, Finland; Future Sound Studios, Unites States; Hansen-Studios, Germany; Last Chance Studios, Unites States; Rhoen-Studios, Germany. An all-star aggregation similar in conception to Ayreon, Avantasia's The Metal Opera naturally spotlights its creator, Tobias Sammet, who wrote all the music and the involved fantasy storyline over the course of a year as a side project from his main gig with the German power metal band Edguy. Though Sammet's vocals play a major role, he recruited some of his power metal contemporaries to sing the parts of different characters in the story, tailoring his casting choices -- elves, dwarves, Druids, and other D&D-type mainstays -- to their vocal ranges. (Oddly, given the themes, there's a bit of a Christian undertone to the lyrics.) It's tempting to say that for a grandiose conceptual project like this, the scope of the ambition is more important (and entertaining) than the actual results. Everything here is painted in such sweeping colors -- the epic song lengths, the heroic themes of the narrative, the bombastic arrangements, even the brief Latin-titled interludes -- that it can be difficult to see how the album could ever achieve the heights it aims for, even if it turns out well. But no matter how over the top things get, it still takes a certain level of craft to pull off something like this convincingly. And in that sense, The Metal Opera delivers the goods. The music is derivative of its influences, but it doesn't really aim to transcend them; it's simply updated classic-style metal, full of memorable riffs, anthemic melodies, and technically accomplished singing and musicianship, and writ large with orchestrations and choral flourishes. Power metal fans generally greeted The Metal Opera as one of the best of the new millennium, and it ranks among the more satisfying listens in its field and time period. ~ Steve Huey

Album of the Year For every fan of melodic metal they have waited for this for a long time. Tobias Sammet (Edguy) has brought together people from the greatest bands in the world and turned it into a dream come true. It kicks off with the excellent "Reach out for the Light" which features Michael Kiske (ex Helloween)which in my opinion is the best vocalist in the world and what a start. Next the excellent "Serpents in Paradise" which features David Defeis (Virgin Steele) and Defeis turns a weak enough song into a great one. Next we have Kiske taking lead vocals and see him returning to metal again in "Breaking Away" and shows he is the best singer in the world. Followed by the outstanding "Farewell" which features guys from Rhapsody and Sharon den Adel which she shows that her and Tarja (Nightwish) are the two best female singers in the world. This album has everything and everyone with Andre Matos (ex Angra, Shaman, Virgo) on tracks like "Inside" and "the Tower" and it's kind of a let down his singing, its still good but now as good as he was with Angra. Other great tracks include "Glory of Rome" featuring Rob Rock which is also an excellent track. A must have for any true metal fan!!!! And they are nearly finished a second part Submitted by emmet10 (Ireland, Cork) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
When the metal knows the perfection!! It is the most brilliant and cerebral history/music in the last times, the powerful musicians denotes the rich experience of the cream of metal, the philosophical wisdom and creativity of Tobias Sammet (Edguy) in lyrics, the perfect duo with Michael Kiske (Ernie), the superb bass of Markus Grosskopf (Helloween), the clean guitar hero Henjo Richter (Gamma Ray), the technical Alex Holzwarth (Rhapsody) and many more, they make of this concise
and deep. . . the future of the characters will be the part II. Submitted by a reviewer (Montevideo, Uruguay) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
