Looking for the best and brightest in extreme heavy music? Look no further than Century Media, who bring you Identity 7: Deadly Sins, a 19-song sampling of the label's formidable roster. Although almost uniformly brutal and heavy, the collection is surprisingly diverse, ranging from the rapid-fire grindcore of Krisiun to the ethereal, progressive goth rock of Lacuna Coil. Also present are the swaggering power grooves of Stuck Mojo and Candiria's hip-hop-laced jazz/metal virtuosity. This is the future of heavy metal. ~ Andy Hinds

| | Warren Haynes Tales Of Ordinary Madness CD (1993)
Identity 7: Deadly Sins music CDs
$12.05 Produced by Chuck Leavell, Warren Haynes' first solo album is a refreshing change of pace from his work with the latter-day incarnation of the Allman Brothers Band. Although the feel of this album is undeniably classic rock, with much of Free's bluesy swagger, it is also vaguely reminiscent of '80s rock at times (check out the Mr. Big-esque verse to "Fire in the Kitchen"). The focus on Tales of Ordinary Madness is clearly on Haynes' songwriting chops. For the most part, the songs on this record are tight and concise, focusing on immediate riffs, gritty vocals, and cool arrangements to sell them. This, however, is not to suggest that Haynes has stopped tearing it up with his guitar, and he amply demonstrates why he is one of the most lauded straight-ahead rock lead guitarists of the '90s. The various bands that back up Haynes are all quite good, and notables Bernie Worrell and producer Leavell both make guest appearances ...

Identity 7: Deadly Sins CD music
$12.55 27's roots in guitar rock bands like the Dirt Merchants and Spore offer no indication of the raw power and beauty to be found on Animal Life -- its grim yet ethereal sound occupies the space between the wasted blues-rock of fellow Bostonites Come, and the slow-motion psychedelia of Mazzy Star and Low, complete with electronic textures and eclectic samples that ultimately render such comparison points moot. Maria Christopher's sensuous, impassioned vocals are the focal point here, but Ayal Naor's guitar leads are remarkably expressive as well, shifting effortlessly from to chiming atmospherics to crunching drones -- the songs rise, curl, and twist like smoke from a cigarette. ~ Jason Ankeny
Maria and Ayal of 27 are influential players in Boston, having introduced innovations in noise to the hard rock and melodic rock scenes surrounding their previous bands. Maria's Dirt Merchants signed to Sony Epic Records, releasing their debut Scarified in 1995 and recording a follow-up that never saw daylight thanks to the age-old "A&R guy skedaddles, leaving pet band reeling in his wake" scenario. Ayal has ...
| | Soul Embraced Immune CD (2003)
Identity 7: Deadly Sins music CDs
$13.45 Soul Embraced has frequently been described as a death metal band, and lead vocalist Chad Moore often favors the sort of demonic-sounding, larynx-ripping vocal style that death metal, black metal, and grindcore are known for. But Immune, the band's third album, underscores the fact that Soul Embraced aren't your average death metal/black metal combo -- and that it would be a mistake to lump them in with bands like In Aeternum, Dark Angel, Impaled, and Triumphator. Immune has as much to do with alternative metal as it does with death metal -- not that the two are mutually exclusive by any means -- and in terms ...

Expect the unexpected indeed, even if you are aware of Ankh's previous four albums. Of course, it has been five years since Bedzie Tajemnica, but even when considering the time gap, this album comes as a surprise. The trio offers ...
