Sayonara Movie Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) Absolutely Beautiful Everything about this film is beautiful. My brother ordered this DVD for me through CD Universe. The quality is top notch.
The movie should be a classic and everyone should own a copy of this film. A heartwrenching story of forbidden love and remarkable loyalty. This film makes me so happy that our world is constantly evolving to a more loving place even in the midst of all of it's faults. Brando was so cool and so real..... The Japanese are an incredibly gifted people. Submitted by Becky (Weatherford, TX) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Sayonara - Best Classic Movie First of all, I did owned a VHS copy of Sayonara which got scratched because of a bad VHS Player, so I decided to go for a DVD Copy of it.
I google a bit and the very first website offering Sayonara on DVD is CD Universe which I order quickly even if it is my first online shopping and shipped to me the next two days. I received my DVD Case well packed and with the proof of purchase.
I played the movie and to my surprise the movie last longer than that of my VHS Copy which of course bring a wide smile on my face.
The key features stated on CD Universe was purely reflected in the DVD, widescreen, subtitled and three languages mainly English, French and Spanish.
Even if the sound is recorded in Mono, it was nice and it couldnot be compared to Stero type as it was so much alike. So I did say "Bingo, that's a good DVD buy from CD Universe, cheap and rapidly shipped and well packed. A neat business."
So back to the movie itself, well, it cannot be compared to a VHS copy for sure because the image was of nice quality though the movie was filmed in 1957.
The main characters are Marlon Brando played Major Lloyd Gruver, a Korean War pilot which found himself on the ground in Japan after the doctor said that he had enough of the flight and Miiko Taka played Hana-Ogi a Matsubayashi Top performer.
The movie is mostly stressed on the Army's official policy against interracial marriage and the almost impossible love between Brando and Taka.
Brando's best friend Red Buttons played ensign Joe Kelly is courting a Japanese Woman, Katsumi played by actress Miyoshi Umeki and Brando find himself as the best man for the wedding of Buttons and Umeki which he was totally against.
Later on, Brando will meet Taka and madly fall in love for her. He tried to catch her attention in any way and Taka still refuses because the Americans got her whole family died during a bombing.
Afterwards Taka began interested with Brando while the latter plays a trick to catch her heart. However, Brando ways of tricking his prey has proven to be very successful as Taka will offer herself to him, she says "I am not allowed to love. But I will love you if that is your wish."
The news spread quickly and the Army replied back with an onslaught way to get all American Soldiers back to motherland without their Japanese wifes and since Buttons cannot bear getting parted with his newly wifes Umeki, decided that both to commit suicide.
Such tragedy had brought the Army to soften its approaches to the matter and this will brought off Brando and Taka to get united again with Brando asking Taka in marriage. Both will find themself infront of Japanese and American reporters questioning the rumours about a possible marriage between the two.
Taka reply back that she had agreed to marry Brando and the reporter posed another question "Major, the big brass are going to yell their heads off about this, and the Japanese aren't going to like it much either. Have you got anything to say to them, sir?" and Brando replied back "Tell them we said, Sayonara."
Sayonara is a great classical romantic/drama movie to be watched and to be owned. In short, it is a best buy for me for a first time at CD Universe. Submitted by J.Lee (Mauritius) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
