Love Songs album
$8.09 The Berlin entry in Universal Music's discount-priced best-of series, 20th Century Masters/The Millennium Collection, is a straight reissue of the 1988 album The Best of Berlin 1979-1988. Berlin's electro-pop sound is salvaged only by the enduring and assertive voice of Terri Nunn, which is why The Best of Berlin is the most preferable place to hear this Los Angeles-based group's music. The synth-soaked punch of ""No More Words"" from 1984's Love Life album and the week-long number one ballad ""Take My Breath Away"" from the film Top Gun are the album's high points, while the other tracks are made up of clean and bright techno pop/rock with heavy emphasis stemming from three different keyboard players employed throughout the band's career. Berlin's '80s poignancy provided some rather palatable music, even if the charts didn't say so. Songs like ""For All Tomorrow's Lies"" and ""Blowin' Sky High"" could compete with anything Soft Cell or A Flock of Seagulls spouted at the time, and the range of Nunn's vocals elevated most of Berlin's efforts above the norm of the run-of-the-mill synthesizer glitz, but only marginally. A compressed lineup of their most accomplished material is definitely the best way in which to enjoy Berlin, avoiding all the inessentials that ...

| | Hangmen Also Die! DVD (1943)
Love Songs music CDs
$22.09 Fritz Lang's HANGMEN ALSO DIE is a grimly atmospheric noir thriller and a vehement commentary on Nazi terror and betrayal. The film focuses on a gunman hiding out with the Resistance in Prague after the 1942 assassination of Hitler henchman Reinhard Heydrich, known as the Hangman. Loosely based on a true story, Lang's film is a terse and melodramatic portrait of mass resistance and Nazi brutality. From the assassination scene--reminiscent of TOUCH OF EVIL--in which Franz Svoboda (Brian Donlevy) gets help from the underground resistance in order to narrowly escape being captured by the Nazis, to the heart-wrenching and suspenseful showdowns between the resistance and the Nazis, HANGMEN ALSO DIE is a tightly structured and elegantly filmed masterpiece.

| | Bananarama Very Best Of CD (2002) (Import) United Kingdom
Love Songs songs
$12.65 More than just three (or sometimes four) pretty faces, Bananarama could be viewed as Blondie's younger, goofier sister. This party-starting compilation includes the threesome's (or sometimes foursome's) hit covers of "Venus," "Na Na Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye)" and "More More More," as well as the smash "Cruel Summer."
Released to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the trio's first single, 1981's "Aie a Mwana," The Very Best of Bananarama is by some distance the most comprehensive collection available. Actually, it's 1988's Greatest Hits Collection in toto (including the early album track "Rough Justice" and the then-new single, a terrible version of the Beatles' "Help!") plus all the singles from 1991's Pop Life and 1994's Please Yourself and a new megamix of three previous hits by their former producer, Pete Waterman, which is just as tacky and embarrassing as it seems it would be. The singles are a handy précis of the two post-Siobhan Fahey albums (neither of which are particularly memorable additions to the canon), and their inclusion, combined with the far superior 1981-1984 singles and the worldwide smash hits from the trio's Stock-Aitken-Waterman era, make this the perfect purchase for the casual Bananarama listener. That said, there are some notable exclusions that make this a frustrating purchase for fans, most notably the original trio's frothy ...
