From its Nagel cover to the haircuts and overall design -- and first and foremost the music -- Rio is as representative of the '80s at its best as it gets. The original Duran Duran's high point, and just as likely the band's as a whole, its fusion of style and substance ensures that even two decades after its release it remains as listenable and danceable as ever. The quintet integrates its sound near-perfectly throughout, the John and Roger Taylor rhythm section providing both driving propulsion and subtle pacing. For the latter, consider the lush, semi-tropical sway of "Save a Prayer," or the closing paranoid creep of "The Chauffeur," a descendant of Roxy Music's equally affecting dark groover "The Bogus Man." Andy Taylor's muscular riffs provide fine rock crunch throughout, Rhodes' synth wash adds perfect sheen, and Le Bon tops it off with sometimes overly cryptic lyrics that still always sound just fine in context, courtesy of his strong delivery. Rio's two biggest smashes burst open the door in America for the New Romantic/synth rock crossover. "Hungry Like the Wolf" blended a tight, guitar-heavy groove with electronic production and a series of instant hooks, while the title track was even more anthemic, with a great sax break from guest Andy Hamilton adding to the soaring atmosphere. Lesser known cuts like "Lonely in Your Nightmare" and "Last Chance on the Stairway" still have pop thrills a-plenty, while "Hold Back the Rain" is the sleeper hit on Rio, an invigorating blast of feedback, keyboards and beat that doesn't let up. From start to finish, a great album that has outlasted its era. ~ Ned Raggett
The artistic progression from the band's self-titled debut to the following year's RIO was the greatest aesthetic leap of Duran Duran's career. The group moved from catchy but somewhat rudimentary New Romantic synth-funk to elegantly arranged, sophisticated pop-rock, concentrating more on song structure than dance beats. For their efforts, they were rewarded with superstar status, due chiefly to "Hungry Like the Wolf," a lascivious tune that injects a welcome dose of rock & roll guitar. The most impressive tracks on RIO, though, are the more contemplative, balladic offerings, like "Lonely in Your Nightmare," "Save a Prayer," and especially "The Chauffer," with its stream-of-consciousness lyrics and unconventional structure, arty without seeming pretentious. If you only have one Duran Duran album, it should be RIO.Spin (p.104) - "[T]he Durannies take new-romantic pop to the masses with lush, synth-driven choruses and lavish videos..."
Q (6/00, p.61) - Ranked #98 in Q's "100 Greatest British Albums" - "...Defined early '80s aspirational glamour, comprising 9 trashily addictive tunes..."
Magnet (p.114) - "[T]he Taylors, drummer Roger and guitarist Andy, laid down an aggressively grooving foundation over which vocalist Simon LeBon and keyboardist Nick Rhodes dropped candy-coated bits of melody and insouciant jet-set attitude."
CMJ (1/5/04, p.10) - Ranked #13 in CMJ's "Top 20 Most-Played Albums of 1982".
CMJ (1/5/04, p.10) - Ranked #1 in CMJ's "Top 20 Most-Played Albums of 1982".
Q (Magazine) (p.125) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Originally released in 1982, today both the Chic-inspired basslines and aspirational lyrics of RIO seem utterly contemporary..."
Pitchfork (Website) - "RIO isn't just front-loaded with some of the era's most bulldozing hits, it's still Duran's best shot at an artistic legacy."
Record Collector (magazine) (p.85) - 5 stars out of 5 -- "1982's RIO was and remains one of the 80s' finest pop statements..."
Record Collector (magazine) (p.84) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Duran Duran gave some thought to their 12" singles...[and] -- the biggest achievement of all -- laying down mixes which don't sound embarrassing two decades later."

5 stars Possibly THE symbol of the 80's!
I'm sorry, this has to be one of the best albums of the 80's. There is not a single dud song on it, and don't even get me started on those pioneering video clips! You get 4 on this CD-ROM and god it's hard staring at those gorgeous creatures in their prime... So good it moves me to tears...

5 stars When it hit in '82 . . . . .
. . . . this album earned the band the acclaim they deserved. I wish only that Capitol/EMI had opted for the full versions of "Nightmare" and "Wolf." Anyway, it's a classic.

5 stars WOW!
This is a fantastic album from a remarkable music talent, Duran Duran. Strange, interesting lyrics from poet Simon LeBon interlaced with New Romantic sounds from the other bandmates takes the listener to exotic thoughts and locations, not to mention the early 80's with life's possibilities still before us. Highly recommended.

5 stars Best Album of the 80's
For their 2nd album, this is pretty damn good! I love all the songs on this album. Hear it for yourself and you'll love it just as much. If you don't, then start searching for the undeniable truth that you are just a fool.

This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
By 1983, with the new romantic movement they'd sprung from a rapidly fading memory, the members of Spandau Ballet showed they had no intention of traveling the same path. Always ambitious, the British quintet really got down to business: Gone were the kilts, frilly shirts, and makeup -- as well as the sometimes chilly electronics of their first two albums. ...

Bravery Sun And The Moon CD  (2008)

Rio
CD $11.69  3.5 stars Audio Samples
The Bravery: Sam Endicott (vocals); Michael Zakarin (guitar); Michael Barreto Hindert (bass instrument); Anthony Burulcich (drums); John Conway (keyboard programming).
On its second album, THE SUN AND THE MOON, the Bravery keeps its strong 1980s influence intact, but eases up on the synthesizers, allowing for a warmer, guitar-driven sound that is enhanced by ace producer Brendan O'Brien (Pearl Jam, Train). While the New York City-based alt-rock band has largely ditched the glam/New Wave look, it's still clearly indebted to specific British acts--the mid-tempo lead single "Time Won't Let Me Go" features frontman Sam Endicott in full-on Robert Smith mode, and "This Is Not the End" works a riff that distinctly recalls the Clash's "London Calling." However, these blatant nods don't drastically detract from the group's lively, accessible sound, which is best showcased on the slinky "Believe."
THE SUN AND THE MOON COMPLETE is a two-disc revision of the Bravery's 2007 single-disc release THE SUN AND THE MOON. The first disc is the entire 2007 album as it was originally produced by alternative rock hitmaker Brendan O'Brien (Pearl Jam, Michael Penn, etc.). The new second disc is a near-total reworking of the album as helmed by the Bravery's frontman and primary songwriter, Sam Endicott, whose quirkier take on the album's songs emphasizes the band's roots in the new-wave revival scene. This two-disc set's list price is the same as that of a single disc.
Like many of-the-moment bands, the Bravery know that yesterday's trends are today's trash. And, like the band's former sparring partners and fellow new wave revivalists the Killers, the Bravery move away from the style that made them famous (or, at the very least, incorporate new sounds into their music) on their second album. Unlike the Killers, who cross-pollinated their love for Bruce Springsteen, U2, and the mythic American West into the rambling but intriguing Sam's Town, on The Sun and the Moon the Bravery try different ideas on for size, but don't commit enough to make them completely convincing. The band spends a significant chunk of the album trying to be as serious and earnest as they were stylish and giddy on The Bravery. On "Time Won't Let Me Go," they adopt a more mainstream rock sound, ditch the synths, and even name-drop Bryan Adams' "Summer of '69" in the lyrics; "The Ocean" delivers strings, acoustic guitars, and all the other trappings of a formerly fun band getting too serious for their own good. Worst of all is "Tragedy Bound," a song about loving a damaged woman that has questionable lyrics like "I'm starting to suspect she likes the abuse." Elsewhere on The Sun and the ...
