| | R Kelly Untitled CD (2009)
Along The Bayside CD music
$11.18 After his aborted, internet-leaked 2008 album, 12 PLAY: 4TH QUARTER, R. Kelly busied himself with guest spots for Beyonce, T-Pain, and Kanye West, even offering a free download on iTunes, "I Believe," inspired by the election of president Barack Obama. While such moves insured that Kelly would never stray far from the R&B throne he's occupied for more than a decade, his 2009 reboot of 12 PLAY, UNTITLED, should provide more than enough reason for fans to keep coming back for more. From Auto Tune-laden crowd pleasers like "Outta the Game" and "Crazy Night" to rousing club-oriented numbers like "Echo," Kelly downplays the slower "baby-making" jams this time around for a set of largely up-tempo songs, capped by a sultry collaboration with Keri Hilson ("Number One").

| | Pink Funhouse CD (2008) Explicit
Along The Bayside music CDs
$8.99 Pink's insistently hooky, attitude-filled pop-rock has kept the singer a fixture on the radio and on singles charts since the early 2000s. The artist's fifth effort, FUNHOUSE, doesn't tamper with the formula: Pink's powerhouse vocals and in-your-face approach, backed by stadium-sized production, are in full effect on all 12 tracks. Even though the album deals primarily with aftermath of her divorce and includes serious moments of self-confrontation like "Sober," fans needn't worry that Pink has lost any of her chutzpah.
If anything, there's an increased sense of confidence and newfound liberation on tracks like the chest-thumping "So What" and the mischievous, bouncing "Bad Influence." In softer moments, like the ballad "I Don't Believe You" and the soulful "One Wrong Foot," Pink channels her personal experience into expressions that carry no less strength or muscle. But FUNHOUSE is a pop album first and foremost, and its catchy choruses, rollicking beats, ...

| | Jay-Z The Blueprint CD (2001)
Along The Bayside CD music
$10.45 THE BLUEPRINT was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. "Izzo (H.O.V.A.)" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance.
"Song Cry" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Male Rap Solo Performance.
It's official. With his fifth album, aptly titled THE BLUEPRINT, Jay-Z has crowned himself the king of rap music. Laying a foundation for other MC's to follow, Jay Hova presents a lyrical masterpiece. And to make matters worse (for the competition, that is), he does so over a selection of the tightest beats (Jus Blaze, Timbaland) to come by hip-hop since fellow Brooklyn-ite Notorious B.I.G. changed the game. Jay-Z sets it off with a clear and concise statement of his purpose, "The Ruler's Back." From then on, each track dares rappers who tried to test his skills to ...

| | Danny Krivit Mix The Vibe: Music Is My Sanctuary CDs (2002)
Along The Bayside songs
$15.79 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by DJ Danny Krivit.
King Street Sound continues to tap the elite of New York's house music DJ community for their Mix the Vibe series, this time enlisting the skills of Body and Soul master Danny Krivit. The result is everything you'd expect from an N.Y.C. house compilation, meaning mid-tempo jams that are heavy on the live instrumentation and vocals as well as dozens of classic disco samples.
New York mainstays Blaze contribute two tracks on this double-disc set, while Kerri Chandler has his hands in three of the selections. Krivit also doubles up the appearance of Atlanta producer Chris Brann's Andanda Project, making him one of the few New York producers to adequately capture the city's sound. It also makes him one of the younger producers found here, especially when compared to such elders as Timmy Regisford and disco queen Loleatta Holloway.
The mixing is as seamless as one would expect, with Krivit moving easily from song to song. He makes minimal use of so-called DJ tools, limiting straight percussion tracks to just one per disc. The vibe Krivit feels on this collection is strictly song-based. And while he resists using any obvious classics, he also restricts himself from exploring the darker textures that found their way into his far more rewarding Expansions CD, released jut eight months later. Those who use the Krivit name as a signifier for this sort of New York house won't be disappointed with this mix. But those who know that Krivit possesses a much broader range may find themselves let down. ~ Joshua Glazer
Performers include: Ananda Project, Mondo Grosso, Loleatta Holloway.
Composer: Chris Brann.
Personnel: Danny Krivit (programming); Jephté Guillaume (vocals, programming); Monday Michiru (vocals, background vocals); Kenny O. Bobien (vocals); Gerard Avant, Michael "Ciro" Cirincione (guitar); Paul Shapiro (flute, saxophone); Robert E. Miller, Dave Jansen (saxophone); Todd Gardner (trumpet); Shinichi Osawa (Wurlitzer organ); Shawn V. Lucas (keyboards, ...
| | Stanley Turrentine On A Misty Night CD (2002)
Along The Bayside album
$9.59 Two former LPs are completely reissued on this single CD. The first set, Have You Ever Seen the Rain, was recorded in 1975 shortly after tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine left the CTI label, and it is a rather commercial effort despite a couple appearances by trumpeter Freddie Hubbard. Mr. T. plays well, as always, but the arrangements by Gene Page for an expanded rhythm section, strings, and voices are quite forgettable and Turrentine is unable to uplift the music much. The second album, 1980's Use the Stairs, has Turrentine with a big band arranged by Wade Marcus, and is more jazz-oriented, with the highlights including "The Lamp Is Low," "On a Misty Night," and "Jordu." But one should acquire Stanley Turrentine's earlier Blue Note and CTI recordings first, for those let him cut loose much more than most of his Fantasy albums. ~ Scott Yanow
