Bassist Santi Debriano contributed seven of the nine selections to this set and takes occasional solos but he is also generous in featuring the other players. The exotic and haunting violin of Miri Ben-Ari contrasts well with the more conventional but no less passionate tenor of Abraham Burton while pianist Helio Alves also has plenty of solo space. The interplay between Burton and Ben-Ari on "Liberty Road" is a highpoint as are some of the individual solos, particularly Burton's on "Trance Dance." The music is post-bop, at times quite melodic, consistently stirring and filled with surprising moments, particularly when the music builds and builds to an intense level. Well worth several listens. ~ Scott Yanow

Artistic License album
$9.79 No doubt because of her bluesy signature tune, "Never Make Your Move Too Soon," vocalist Ernestine Anderson has been typecast as a home-fried, worldy-wise vampster, and there's no question that this Houston-born songbird can get down with the best of them. But Anderson always has strived for sophisticated elegance, as well, her initial inspiration being Sarah Vaughan. With perfect intonation and a voice Seattle contemporary Quincy Jones once described as sounding like "honey at dusk," Anderson often succeeds. On this collection of ballads, pulled from eight albums made for Concord with top of the line pianists between 1979 and 1990, she often hits the mark. Anderson offers a touching ...

Artistic License album
$12.95 For L.A. pianist/composer Carney's second CD, it's more of the same modern jazz which he so adeptly displayed on his debut Fables from the Aqueduct. Tracks alternate between piano-led, romantic, impressionistic, ECM-like pieces and the highly composed and arranged group works that border on stunning. These two aspects let Carney show his mettle as a player and as a leader. Both sides are attractive, marking him as one of the more original younger musicians emerging in the '90s. Pieces like "Swamp Rookie," "Quinn Martin" and "Photo Op" have a New Orleans shuffle feel, ...

$11.35 Although this excellent album is listed as a Duke Ellington, equal billing should be given to the participation of Charles Mingus and Max Roach. The remastered CD is outstanding, having been cleaned up from the original master tape. The CD also has the addition of six extra tracks, including four unheard Ellington originals: "Very Special," "Rem Blues," "Switch Blade," and "Backward Country Boy Blues." He is as at home in the setting of a trio as he is with a wailing big-band, and as usual, he allows the other musicians to play. The trio version of "Caravan" ...
