Burst and Bloom is a five-song EP of patented Cursive indie rock, but with a new feature. They now have a cellist. Much of the cello playing isn't integral to the structure of the tunes, yet when it is audible, it seems to go along with the music very well. Another point of note is that this release doesn't seem to have quite the heaviness that Domestica had, nor does it have the dynamics that Storms of Early Summer or their split with Silver Scooter showcased. So, what is Burst and Bloom like exactly? Well, it seems to be a little more technical -- more intricate guitar work, layered nicely with the cello in some cases. A little speedier with the tempo and much steadier in their delivery. None of this is to say that Cursive wasn't those things in previous efforts, it's just that's what sticks out the most. Burst and Bloom is another lyrical catharsis for Tim Kasher, a delivery of his melancholy, yet not in such a pungent manner. The emotional dishevelment is more subtler and perhaps only longtime fans will grasp the difference. New fans will appreciate a concise yet wonderful introduction to this Omaha, NE, five-piece. ~ Kurt Morris

This is a great follow up to their Ugly Organ cd. Listen to this cd then the Ugly Organ cd and it flows really well with it.

Cursive Storms Of Early Summer: Semantics Of Song CD  (1998)

Burst & Bloom album
CD $10.79  Audio Samples Definitive Album
Through the course of Cursive's sophomore full-length, listeners get to endure raging tempests, sermons that inquire more than they preach, and finally, a lull with the onset of a new season. With Tim Kasher on guitar/vocals; Matt Maginn on bass; Stephen Pederson on guitar, and Clint Schnase drumming, the Omaha-based band divides its songs into two acts: man vs. nature, and man vs. himself, straying from one-shot efforts on Such Blinding Stars for Starving Eyes and establishing a loosely based concept album. A lot of the songs on this release seem to harp on the idea of being frustrated with incomplete thoughts and, like many so-called emo bands, the inability to put together the right string of words to accurately describe a feeling. See "The Rhyme Scheme" and "The ...

With more rock and less whine, Cursive provides an exclamation point to the emo scene with Domestica, their third release. Led by vocalists Tim Kasher and former Lullaby for the Working Class frontman Ted Stevens, Domestica explores Kasher's messy divorce through a series of clever but transparent metaphors. Domestica is a concept album harping on the ugliness and beauty of love, a treatise on the pains of divorce and romance. While the themes are nothing new, they are executed inventively. Half the songs don't even contain a chorus, replacing the classic song structure with a string of middle eights ...

Although much is made of this Utah foursome's rebellious background (singer Bert McCracken's former drug addiction and the band's pre-record deal pan-handling street-kid lifestyle), all that's really required to ascertain the level of the band's commitment is a close listen to their self-titled debut release. They leap into each song as though their lives depended upon it (maybe they're not so anxious to go back to spare-changing). While they are initially presented as another entrant in the aggro-rock sweepstakes, there's a bit more than that to the Used. Sure, McCracken can let out blood-curdling screams of angst ...

A side project from Death Cab For Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello, who formerly played with synth-poppers Figurine but now records as Dntel, the Postal Service creates bedroom electronica with surprising emotional pull on GIVE UP. Ten tracks lyrically convey both a youthful ennui and the nostalgic ache of longing. Tamborello creates a tense sonic space that allows Gibbard's spare yet ...

Burst & Bloom album
CD $9.79  4.6 stars Audio Samples Definitive Album
The fourth full-length album by Omaha-based indie band Cursive--the second after their 2000 reformation following an extended breakup--THE UGLY ORGAN continues with both the dark lyrical themes and more acoustic sound of its immediate predecessor, DOMESTICA. Where that album was explicitly about Cursive frontman Tim Kasher's apparently emotionally devastating divorce, THE UGLY ORGAN is both more general in its themes and more misanthropic in its attitude. Music business aggravations permeate "Butcher the Song" and "Art Is Hard," while more personal demons haunt "A Gentleman Caller" and "Some Red Handed Sleight of ...

Good Life Album Of The Year CDs  (2004)

Burst & Bloom CD music
CD $10.79  4.3 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
The Good Life follow up the excellent Lovers Need Lawyers EP with their best record yet and maybe the best indie rock record of 2004. Album of the Year is a concept record of sorts, one song for each month, each song a heart-rending essay of love found, lost, broken, or ripped apart, ranging from the puppy love "Album of the Year" to the depressed, resigned-to-loss "A New Friend" and "Two Years This Month." Tim Kasher has found his voice, and almost all traces of previous Robert Smith-isms are gone; instead, he whispers, hollers, cajoles, and confesses in a voice stripped of artifice and plugged right into the listener's soul. The record is perfectly constructed. Based around acoustic guitars, the songs are colored in with keyboards, various percussion instruments, and glockenspiel, and made dramatic and often breathtaking. Songs like "You're Not You" and "Album of the Year" ...
