| | Kool & The Gang Celebration: The Best Of Kool & The Gang 1979-1987 CD (1994)
Come On In The Room music CDs
$12.19 Though Kool & the Gang was a fine hardcore funk outfit in the 1970s, the group decided, by the close of that decade, to reinvent their sound for pop radio. The result--a combination of slick production, R&B vocals, and the band's already well-honed grooves--made Kool & the Gang one of the biggest-selling and most beloved pop acts of the '80s. CELEBRATION: THE BEST OF KOOL & THE GANG collects 17 of the band's singles from this era, most of which will be immediately familiar to anyone even remotely familiar with '80s pop radio.
The Gang wrote numerous high-polish dance grooves featuring a heavy backbeat, staccato horn charts, and infectious vocal choruses that seem custom-built for group sing-alongs. The international smash "Celebration" is one such song (has there been more definitive party anthem?), as is the hard-grooving "Ladies Night," and the groove imperative "Get Down on It." The Gang also scored with their mid-tempo R&B ("Joanna"), funk-tinged soul ("Fresh"), and swelling ballads in the Adult Contemporary mode ("Cherish"). These showcase the Gang's superior vocalists (check out James "J.T." Taylor's butter-smooth croon on "Too Hot," for example). Those seeking a comprehensive collection of Kool & the Gang's '80s hits need look no further than this excellent compilation.

| | Down South Bounce Vol. 2 CD (2001)
Come On In The Room music CDs
$10.69 Less than a year after his first genre-defining volume of the Down South Bounce series, DJ Jelly returned with a second volume. For the most part, he sticks with the same no-frills approach that made the first volume such a success: He spins some of the most acknowledged Dirty South club anthems and plays it safe in terms of mixing the records, for better or worse. Some of the highlights here include Trick Daddy and Trina's "Nann Nigga," Three 6 Mafia's "Tear da Club Up '97," Eightball & MGJ's "Pimp in My Own Rhyme," Goodie Mob's "They Don't Dance No Mo'," and Master P and Mia X's "Bout It, Bout It." Considering just these songs, Down South Bounce, Vol. 2 certainly has no shortage of classics. Unfortunately, though these aforementioned songs are indeed some of the best Dirty South anthems from the late '90s, there are a few questionable inclusions on this mix; in particular, the latter half of the mix features a number of relatively underground tracks that aren't going to be familiar to most casual listeners and are admittedly not on par with the rest of the mix. Had Jelly kept dropping nothing but classics as he does on the first half of the mix, this volume could arguably have surpassed the first volume in terms of quality. But that isn't the case and, as a result, these latter songs spoil what could have been a flawless mix. Furthermore, Jelly's mixing leaves much to be desired here as well. Sure, he was no Grandmaster Flash on Vol. 1 either, but here you really wonder ...
