Lonnie Mack is one of the original guitar heroes, and this is Ace Records' third & final look at his trend-setting output for Fraternity Records in the 1960s. A genuine highlight is the inclusion of "Soul Serenade" by Beau Dollar & The Coins, with Lonnie
As the third and final volume of the trilogy of Ace compilations covering Lonnie Mack's 1960s Fraternity recordings, this at a glance looks like a mop-up of the bottom of the can. If that's so, though, it's quite an enjoyable mop-up, albeit with an erratic streak in both the quality and form of the material. About half of this is previously unreleased, including some alternate takes of officially released sides. Some of the 1963-1967 singles are really fine, like the instrumental "Nashville," which has mean blues-rock licks on par with anything Mack's done -- meaning that they're on par with anyone's blues-rock licks. Otherwise there are some honky-tonk twist instrumentals; some quite fine blue-eyed soul vocals with horns, like "She Don't Come Here Anymore" and "Crying Over You"; and a genuine hit (low-charting, admittedly, at number 78), "Honky Tonk '65." It gets wackier: a rather cool instrumental adaptation of "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," mixing lounge horns with biting guitar riffs; a mix of surf reverb and soundtrack theme on "When I'm Alone"; and straight country music on "Are You Guilty?" There are also rare singles by Beau Dollar & the Coins, Denny "Dumpy" Rice, the Charmaines, and Max Falcon on which Mack played, as well as a mono version of his big hit, "Memphis." Some of this CD is so-so, but the high points ensure that it won't disappoint Mack lovers. ~ Richie Unterberger
Personnel includes: Lonnie Mack (guitar); Denny "Dump" Rice, Max Falcon, The Charmaines.

| | Alice Cooper Hell Is CD (2003) (Import) England; Netherlands
From Nashville To Memphis
$9.69 HELL IS is a 2003 compiliation of 16 tracks by Alice Cooper, including "Poision" and a live version of "School's Out."
Alice Cooper has recorded for a variety of different labels over the course of his career, and it seems as if each label has issued a respective "best-of" collection. During most of the late '80s/early '90s, Alice's home was Epic Records, for which he issued 1989's Trash, 1991's Hey Stoopid, 1994's The Last Temptation, and 1995's Classicks, and this is the era that's highlighted on the 2003 16-track compilation Hell Is. Although he scored his first hit album in years with Trash (thanks to the hit single "Poison" and contributions from Jon Bon Jovi and Steven Tyler), Alice continued with this pop-metal approach on Hey Stoopid. Bad move, as it soon stuck out like a sore thumb among such burgeoning hard rock styles as thrash metal and grunge. As a result, Alice returned to the sprawling, conceptual approach of such past classics as Welcome to My Nightmare for The Last Temptation. While Temptation may not have boosted his commercial appeal, it at least restored his standing among his legion of fans, before Alice fulfilled his contract with the half-compilation/half-concert set, Classicks. Instead ...

| | Clifton Chenier Louisiana Blues & Zydeco CD (1965) Remix
From Nashville To Memphis
$9.89 These dozen and a half songs span the couple years on either side of Chenier's big introduction into the blues world at the 1966 Berkeley Blues Festival in California. Immediately embraced by this audience, the Bay area label Arhoolie began recording him regularly. What's reassuring is how the intense and honest power of his Texas recordings was maintained in these new environs. Working with his core band (most notably his brother Cleveland Chenier on rub-board), the were a well-seasoned unit made strong from playing endless dances throughout the Bayou region. The album's title is a succinct bit of truth in advertising--it is indeed a winning set of blues and zydeco. Besides being a wonder on the accordion, Chenier possess a voice equally at ease with bluesy balladry and boastful strutting.
Right in the beginning of his career as the "King of Zydeco", Clifton Chenier recorded an album for an upstart Arhoolie. At the time, the genre was just starting to spread outside of the bayou proper, ...
