Most of this CD features vibraphonist Teddy Charles heading an advanced tentet in 1956, a unit including the likes of trumpeter Art Farmer, altoist Gigi Gryce, tenor saxophonist J.R. Monterose, pianist Mal Waldron, and guitarist Jimmy Raney. The arrangements of George Russell ("Lydian M-1"), Gil Evans (a year before Miles Ahead), Jimmy Giuffre, Mal Waldron, and Charles are quite advanced but often leave room for some swinging spots. The final three selections on the CD are actually taken from a slightly later album. Of these, "Blue Greens" is a change of pace, a quartet outing for Charles, pianist Hall Overton, bassist Charles Mingus, and drummer Ed Shaughnessy. All in all, this CD is pretty definitive of Teddy Charles' more adventurous music of the 1950s and it grows in interest with each listening. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Al Green Mr. Lucky CD (2002)
Teddy Charles Tentet
$13.29 No, the Al Green who plays on Mister Lucky isn't the famous soul icon turned gospel-singing Protestant minister who gave listeners '70s classics like "Take Me to the River," "Let's Stay Together," "Love and Happiness," and "I'm Still in Love With You." This Al Green isn't from Memphis, and he doesn't sing soul or gospel; he's a Chicago-based drummer who started out playing blues before making instrumental hard bop his main focus. And bop is exactly what he plays on Mister Lucky, a 2002 session that he co-leads with alto saxophonist and fellow Chicago resident Othello Anderson (who has an attractive tone in the Charlie Parker/Jackie McLean/Sonny Stitt/Phil Woods vein). Neither Green nor Anderson are well known, but they've both been around the Windy City jazz scene for decades -- which means that they're exactly the sort of players who would typically record for Delmark (a Chicago-based indie that has been great about giving lesser-known local talent a chance to record). On Mister Lucky, Green and ...

Teddy Charles Tentet
$12.65 M.Dibango/Sade/B.Maal/Kelis/T. Mahal/N.Rodgers/D'Angelo/M.Gra
Good records work; great records have an organic unity. By their nature, tributes can rarely be more than good records, but somehow Red Hot + Riot manages to transcend that. In part it's because it moves into uncharted territory, mixing African and African-American artists in ways that haven't happened before, all in tribute to the late Fela Kuti (an apt subject for an AIDS fundraiser, since he died of the disease). And so there's rapping over Afro-beat grooves (a refreshing change from lame hip-hop beats), jazz, and R&B, African musicians playing Afro-beat, and a whole lot more, plus some of the most conscious words you'll hear in many a year. Mix Master Mike mashes up some Fela cuts for the interludes, which makes for perfect breaks, especially the opener, which leads into the powerful "Kalakuta Show" ...
