If your first reaction on hearing about a musical called Urinetown is that that's an awful title, don't worry, the authors are way ahead of you. Its awfulness is the point, and Urinetown is as much a musical about a musical as it is, well, a musical. The opening song, for example, is called "Too Much Exposition," and in it, Officer Lockstock (Jeff McCarthy), who acts as the narrator, explains "the central conceit of the show," which is that, in a mythical town suffering a drought, "everyone has to use public bathrooms" and pay high fees, a story line Little Sally (Spencer Kayden) describes as "bad subject matter." Urinetown might as well be called "Allegory-ville," you see, even though that wouldn't be as repulsive -- and therefore as provocative -- a title. Lyricist/librettist Greg Kotis clearly has spent a lot of time studying Bertolt Brecht, and composer/co-lyricist Mark Hollmann is a big fan of Kurt Weill, so that Urinetown's clear antecedents are shows like The Threepenny Opera and Weill/Brecht disciple Mark Blitzstein's The Cradle Will Rock. The story is about the evil rich and the hapless poor, and the authors draw equally from the Depression era of the 1930s and the naïve idealism of the early '60s, casting several of their songs in the folk/gospel style of the freedom songs of the civil rights movement. But they also have absorbed a heavy dollop of the political cynicism of the late '60s; another obvious influence is Frank Zappa, especially in his own unproduceable anti-musical, Thing-Fish. But it's one thing to have all those influences, and it's another to write up to their level, which, amazingly, Kotis and Hollmann have done. Title, subject matter, and attitude aside, Urinetown is full of inventive melodies and clever lyrics, and they easily put over its smirking nihilism. ~ William Ruhlmann

3 stars Worth a grand, cost a penny!
This musical is wonderful in all respects. While the Broadway show is not the one I saw live, even the production I saw managed to turn it into something entirely out of this world. To be entirely blatant (and entirely true): This musical is win. Buy, and rejoice.

West-Coast Duo Makes Their East-Coast Debut in Chapel Hill by Alan R. Hall If you know Chapel Hill, NC, then you know Franklin Street; it literally runs from one end of town to the other. And if you know Franklin Street, you know the Villa Teo, which is a treat for the eye; an Italian villa, set right off the road, that was once a restaurant, and now is a renowned source for antiques. And lately, it is pretty well accepted that if you know the Villa Teo, then you know the Caffe Driade, a coffeehouse that has managed to draw very nearly everyone in town to it at least once, if only to see its location. It's pretty staggering, even by Chapel Hill's standards. Tucked into a grove of trees just a stone's throw from the Villa, it sports a lovely green lawn, a stone outdoor seating area, a rear, tree-covered patio, and just about the sheerest drop of hill from that patio in the entirety of Chapel Hill, which is, of course, known for its hills. Oh, and don't forget; there's the outdoor stage just out front, where, from late spring to late fall, the Caffe presents some of the very best in Triangle (and not-so-Triangle) live music.Wednesday night is songwriter night, the night of the troubadour; and I can tell you personally there is no shortage of those who fit that description in the Triangle. Both Fridays and Saturdays there is a wide range to choose from; there is Roots music, Jazz, Folk, Rock, and even an upcoming show whose chosen style of music is "ethereal pop." The one thing that links every one of these groups together is that they are fine, knowledgeable, and entertaining musicians. This common factor is what keeps Caffe Driade packed on weekend nights. Just as the sun starts going down, the music starts ...
