With its instrumentation of two saxophones, two electric guitars, electric bass, and drums, one might expect EUROPE to sound like some variant of jazz fusion. However, this session is helmed by drummer/downtown icon Paul Motian whose Electric Bebop Band specializes in both the familar and lesser-known compositions of Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Tadd Dameron, and others. And while EUROPE does have an ambiance somewhat evoking fusion--they aren't trying to go backwards stylistically either--this set is still straight-up bebop, with plenty of elegant swing, lively harmonic invention, and brisk (also subtle) interaction between the players.
Recorded at Bauer Studios, Ludwigsburg, Germany from July 2-5, 2000.
Personnel: Paul Motian (drums); Steve Cardenas, Ben Monder (guitar); Pietro Tonolo (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Chris Cheek (tenor saxophone); Anders Christensen (electric bass).

Down Beat (9/01, p.65) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...A resonant melding of slightly raucous interplay, fervently executed rhythmic developments and succinctly stated choruses..." Purchase Europe CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Anthony Wilson Adult Themes CD (1999)
Europe album
$14.05 Anthony Wilson showed a fair amount of promise on his self-titled debut album of 1997, and he lives up to that promise on 1998's Goat Hill Junket, and on his third album Adult Themes. This CD is noteworthy not only because of Wilson's Wes Montgomery-influenced guitar playing, but also because of his arranging and composing. On Adult ...
| | Jim Hall & Basses CD (2001)
Europe CD music
$9.65 Jim Hall is no stranger to guitar/bass duets after several memorable outings with the likes of Ron Carter and Red Mitchell, but this series of studio sessions is even more challenging, mixing it up in pairings with Dave Holland, Christian McBride, Charlie Haden, George Mraz, and Scott Colley. Only three of the 13 pieces are standards, including a soft and sparse treatment of "All the Things You Are" with Mraz, a whisper-soft and slowly savored "Don't Explain" with Haden, and a switch to acoustic guitar for a tense "Besame Mucho" with Colley. Hall's skills as a composer are vastly underrated by the jazz audience as a whole, but his fellow players ...

| | Miroslav Vitous Universal Syncopations CD (2003)
Europe songs
$14.65 On his first jazz date as a leader since 1992, Czechoslovakian bassist and composer Miroslav Vitous comes out of the gate with a host of heavyweights on one of the more lyrically swinging dates in modern jazz. Vitous' engaged, pulsing, and deeply woody tone is featured in the company of John McLaughlin, Jan Garbarek, Chick Corea, and Jack DeJohnette. While the crystalline sound of Manfred Eicher's ECM is everywhere here, as is the open-ended speculative jazz that the label is renowned -- and ridiculed for -- Vitous offers some startlingly beautiful twists and turns with his ensemble. Vitous, who has been through every music, from jazz-rock fusion as a founding member of Weather Report to being a classical ...
| | Ju-On: The Grudge DVD (2004) Subtitled
Europe album
$10.29 Among the scariest movies ever put on celluloid, like its similarly styled sister, RINGU, this tale of death-by-curse is nothing short of blood chilling. With chapters named after each subsequent victim, it plays like a series of increasingly daunting, deadly vignettes. All of the stories surround a haunted house where the evil spirit of a 5-year-old boy still lurks. The first to enter the residence and ...

One of the finest records Mingus made with the Workshop, JAZZ COMPOSER'S WORKSHOP displays the musical precision, shifting, improvised structures and balance between form and freedom for which the bassist's experimental outfit was renowned. Less atonal than some Workshop efforts, tracks like "Purple Heart" and "Smog L.A." hearken back to theme-driven songs with more or less traditional chord patterns. In "Gregarian Chant" and "Eulogy for Rudy Williams, however, the approach is more abstract as Mingus leads his three sax men, pianist and drummer through the evolving space of the piece, applying chords and floating melodic sections like layers of paint.
Elsewhere, other techniques are employed. "Tea For Two" takes the chords of the well-known ditty and piles them with improvisations and fragmented ...
