This pop-punk outfit started out young--VERY young. They were still in their teens when they released their first album, and this one--their third--naturally finds them still flush with youthful enthusiasm but bearing distinct signs of songwriting maturity. There's no slowdown of excitement on STAY WHAT YOU ARE--the band still practices four-on-the-floor, heavy-guitar punk-pop a la Green Day or Blink-182. But their lyrical smarts put them in a place somewhere in between those two bands; smarter and more purposeful than the latter and minus the ballads-with-strings moves of the former. Although the pace seldom lets up from blazing guitars, pounding drums, and proud, loud, and snotty vocals, there's a discernible intelligence at the heart of the songs that lets the listener know that Saves the Day put a fair amount of thought into the tunes on STAY WHAT YOU ARE.

Just Amazing The songs you've probably heard off this cd, Freakish and At Your Funeral, don't do it justice. This is a masterful emo production. Every song is catchy and upbeat and will leave you singing them in your head for a long time. Submitted by a reviewer (Augusta, GA, US) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Saves The Day Through Being Cool CD (1999)
Stay What You Are
$12.25 Possessing a fiery dynamism lacking in their debut Can't Slow Down, Saves the Day's sophomore release on Equal Vision is an emocore classic. More anxious than emo godfathers Get Up Kids, Saves the Day opted for punchier production and faster tempos to provide a backdrop for singer Chris Conley's romantic teen declarations. True to the genre Conley helped define, his lyrics walk a thin sentimental wire. Just when the stories lose balance, leaning toward the obvious, sappy, or both, Conley ...
| | Finch What It Is To Burn CD (2002)
Stay What You Are
$12.59 A surprising amalgam of punk and metal, with a dash of emo, Finch's full-length debut is a powerful statement of first principles from this Temecula, CA quintet. Kicking off with the storming, anthemic "New Beginnings," they rush headlong through a set that positively bursts with uncorked energy, from the chiming, mid-tempo "Post Script" to the punky ...
| | Used CD (2002) Enhanced CD
Stay What You Are
$6.85 Although much is made of this Utah foursome's rebellious background (singer Bert McCracken's former drug addiction and the band's pre-record deal pan-handling street-kid lifestyle), all that's really required to ascertain the level of the band's commitment is a close listen to their self-titled debut release. They leap into each song as though their lives depended upon it (maybe they're not so anxious to go back to spare-changing). While they are initially presented as another entrant in the aggro-rock sweepstakes, there's a bit more than that to the Used. Sure, McCracken can let out blood-curdling ...
| | Starting Line Say It Like You Mean It CD (2002)
Stay What You Are
$12.59 With an average age of 21, the Starting Line on its debut SAY IT LIKE YOU MEAN IT is more than qualified to reflect the preoccupations of its audience. It's also entitled to marvel at its phenomenal success, which it does to good effect on "Given the Chance" ("There's not a day that I can't say all this time I'm living out my dream"). The band hews to the pop-punk party line faithfully throughout--it's pretty obvious that Green Day is as much the touchstone for present-day ...
| | Saves The Day In Reverie CD (2003)
