Jazz Is Dead: Jimmy Herring (guitar); T Lavitz (keyboards); Alphonso Johnson (bass); Rod Morgenstein (drums). Recorded at IMAC Theatre, Huntington, New York. Jazz Is Dead, one of America's premier jam bands, delivers their breakthrough recording with Great Sky River. Recorded "live" at the IMAC Theater in Huntington, NY, with Jimmy Herring on guitar, Alphonso Johnson on bass, T Lavitz on keyboards, and Rod Morgenstein on drums, the band plays a powerful, high-energy set that features their rock chops in all their jam band glory. Three extended jams -- "Estimated Prophet," "St. Stephen/The Eleven," and "Terrapin Station/Dark Star" -- form the heart and soul of the show and the band's true calling. Lovers of groove, electronica, and rock guitar pyrotechnics will find themselves ear deep in the guitar wizardry of Jimmy Herring on these jams. Absent is drummer Jeff Sipe, but Rod Morgenstein definitely holds down the rhythm section with an unreal and potent drum solo on "St. Stephen/The Eleven." T Lavitz goes the distance and plays an intense set as does Alphonso Johnson, with his basslines speaking out as much more than an appendage to Lavitz's keyboards or Herring's guitar. Great Sky River exceeds the group's 1999 "live" release, Laughing Water: Wake of the Flood Revisited -- which also explored and featured classic Grateful Dead compositions -- because the performance was not altered or overdubbed. This CD is truly "live" and a cool 21st century representation of Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter's ripe rock repertoire. ~ Paula Edelstein Jazz Is Dead Great Sky River Songs Great Sky River Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Whoa baby! This cd is sooo amazing. i'd go on a limb and say that this version of St. Stephen is better than the original. whoa baby! Submitted by Ps2_dc (Middlebury, CT, US of A) Was This Review Helpful? Thumbs Up! Wow, this CD simply smokes. Now, I've never been a fan of the Grateful Dead and after listening to these all-instrumental covers performed live, I'm still not. But that aside, the songs themselves are basically just a foundation for these four guys to launch off into improvisation heaven, and that they do without apology. All four compliment the other members and all four take off on extended solo flights that will please any fan of instrumental-jazz-jam music. A bonus is the fantastic HDCD recording, sounds awesome...crank it up! Submitted by braxtonadams (Austin, TX) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Great Sky River
$14.69 Personnel: Bill Callahan (vocals, guitar, jaw harp, piano, Hammond B-3 organ, synthesizer, tapes); Jeff Parker (guitar); Matt Lux (upright & electric basses); John McEntire (drums, percussion); Rich Schuler (drums); Jennifer Collins, Nicole Evans, Damian Rogers (background vocals). Engineers include: Phil Bonnet, Joe Dilillo, John McEntire. Personnel: Bill Callahan (vocals, guitar, piano, synthesizer); J. Parker (guitar); Matt Lux (upright bass); John McEntire (drums, percussion); Richard Schuler (drums). Audio Mixer: John McEntire. After a decade as one of indie rock's most consistent, versatile artists, Smog's ninth album catalogs the sounds and emotions that Bill Callahan explored on previous albums. Dongs of Sevotion borrows Wild Love's chamber rock arrangements, Red Apple Falls' droning folk, The Doctor Came at Dawn's painful honesty, Knock Knock's sardonic humor, and even nods to Burning Kingdom's album artwork. While these eclectic influences could have had scattered results, Dongs of Sevotion is remarkably spare and focused; over half the album is just Callahan on vocals and guitar and/or piano, with Tortoise's John McEntire on drums. Not surprisingly, the starker songs are the most lyrically loaded. On the coming-of-age ballad "Nineteen," Callahan laments, "My movements were slow/She didn't even know/What she was taking away," and on "Devotion," he notes, "There are some terrible gossips in this town/With jaws like vices and eyes like drains." "Easily Led" and "Distance" are musically and emotionally similar, tending to blend together in the middle of the album. However, Dongs begins with "Justice Aversion," a survival-of-the-fittest tale set to icy, detached synths, and "Dress Sexy at My Funeral," a warm, sensual recounting of a man's final wishes: "Tell them about the time we did it with fireworks above us" -- a one-two punch that captures the album's range. "Bloodflow" mixes a Jew's harp, cheerleaders (the "Dongettes," natch), and a galloping beat, and rhymes "tete-a-tete" ...
