Inside Chicago, Vol. 1 album Product Description
Inside Chicago, Vol. 1 album by Von Freeman was released May 15, 2007 on the SteepleChase label. A very loose live date recorded at Chicago's Jazz Showcase in 1995, featuring only four tunes, two of which ("Speak Low" and "Straight No Chaser") exceed 20 minutes in length. Inside Chicago, Vol. 1 songs Sharing the spotlight are local tenor hero Von Freeman and one of his mentors, trumpeter Brad Goode; they're joined by pianist Joan Hickey, bassist Sherman Davis, and drummer Michael Raynor. Inside Chicago, Vol. 1 album The recording quality isn't top-notch by any means, and the final track -- Wayne Shorter's "Footprints" -- ends after six minutes only because the tape ran out. Inside Chicago, Vol. 1 CD music A determination was made to release the truncated performance, on the logic that Von Freeman's playing ought to be heard rather than not. Inside Chicago, Vol. 1 music CDs His urgent choruses on this cut are indeed worth hearing, as are his unaccompanied passages on the ballad "You've Changed." ~ David R. Adler Personnel: Von Freeman (tenor saxophone); Brad Goode (trumpet); Joan Hickey (piano); Michael Raynor (drums). Recording information: Jazz Showcase, Chicago, IL (02/15/1995).

Booker Ervin Tex Book Tenor CD (2005)
Tex Book Tenor was recorded in 1968 as a follow-up to Booker Ervin's debut date for Blue Note, The In Between, which was released in January of the same year. The album remained unreleased until 1976, when it was issued with an also unreleased Horace Parlan date on a double LP called Back from the Gig. This is its first appearance on CD. The ...

Freddie Hubbard Without a Song: Live in Europe 1969 CD (2009)
Never before available, these 1969 live recordings capture the trumpeter Freddie Hubbard at the height of his formidable powers. Working with a basic quartet including the fine pianist Sir Roland Hanna, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Louis Hayes, Hubbard blasts through seven fiery numbers, including his mentor Dizzy Gillespie's "A Night In Tunisia," Red Garland's "Blues By Five," and a free jazz excursion called "Space Walk." With Ron Carter on board, the virtuosic band bears more than a passing resemblance to Miles ...

Horace Silver Paris Blues, 1962 CD (2002)
Inside Chicago, Vol. 1 CD music Horace Silver is not only important because of his contributions as a pianist/composer; he's also been a first-rate talent scout (much like Miles Davis, Chick Corea, and Art Blakey). From Donald Byrd to Joe Henderson to Tom Harrell, so many of Silver's sidemen have come to be recognized as serious jazz heavyweights. The hard bopper led his share of five-star groups -- especially in the '50s and '60s -- but if any one Silver combo went down in history as his most ...

Inside Chicago, Vol. 1 album Veteran tenor saxophonist Harold Land returns from a seven-year recording hiatus with Promised Land, featuring Mulgrew Miller on piano, Ray Drummond on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. (Sadly, this would be one of Higgins's last sessions.) One would expect nothing other than beauty and grace from these four revered players, and that's what they deliver, aided by the Audiophoric label's "m-phoric" recording technology, designed to capture live acoustic performance with exceptional fidelity. (You'll need to increase your volume and ...
