African-American R&B has affected different reggae artists in different ways. While Toots and the Maytals' gritty ska/reggae is comparable to the raw, tough southern soul that Wilson Picket, Sam & Dave and Otis Redding were known for, Culture's sweet, mellifluous style of reggae is closer to the northern soul and sweet soul that came out of Chicago, Philadelphia and Detroit in the '60s and '70s. On International Herb, ones hears a lot of northern soul influence, as well as Afro-Caribbean and African pop influences. Although not in a class with Two Sevens Clash or Baldhead Bridge, International Herb is a respectable, pleasing effort that Culture fans were glad to acquire. Virgin's original LP version of International Herb generated some controversy thanks to its front cover, which showed Culture's members smoking large spliffs while standing in front of a tall, bushy marijuana plant. Marijuana advocates loved the cover, marijuana opponents hated it and Libertarians defended Culture's right to free speech -- even if they were Libertarian teetotalers who wouldn't dream of touching a spliff themselves. The title song is unapologetically pro-marijuana, while other noteworthy tracks (including "Ethiopians Waan Guh Home," "Rally Around Jahovah's Throne" and "Jah Rastafari") put forth a very Rastafarian message. International Herb falls short of essential, but it's an enjoyable illustration of the group's talents. ~ Alex Henderson

| | K C Frogge Flying Solo CD (2005)
International Herb album
$17.09 When K.C. Frogge picks up a pen to write a song, whether its roots are in rock, folk, country or ballad, it's like a fine artist selecting a paintbrush, examining the subject before painting, and then, speaking in a language of broad, passionate strokes paired with fine details, speaking volumes with one canvas. She "paints" incredibly moving pictures with her lyrics and vocals, the only difference between song and painting being that the frame and canvas are now the ears and mind of the listener. "Flying Solo" is a totally-acoustic, one-voice, one-guitar collection of nine of K.C.'s most-requested songs from open mics and local performances (including "Car at the End of the World" which was featured as one of 20 "Best Songs You Never Heard" on KGO-Radio's Pete Wilson program, and of which guest judge Diane DiGarmo, runner-up in the 2003 American Idol competition, said could definitely find its way onto her iPod). "Flying Solo" features K.C.'s intriguing songwriting skills, lyrics full of imagery that invite you to close your eyes and create your own music video, and a resonant, unique voice that has been described as, among other things, a "vocalrollercoaster" with abundant range and emotion. "Lovely, unique voice... strong hooks... nice play on words." -- Annalisa, afternoon host at KFOG-FM 104.5 (San Francisco), noting K.C.'s performance at a West Coast Songwriters open mic performance "Interesting vocals and word play with lyrics." -- Jocelyn Kane, Motogirl Productions "Interesting vibrato there... I can't do vibrato!" -- Pete Wilson, host of San Francisco's KGO radio's "The Best Music You Never Heard" program on 11/20/05 after K.C.'s song, "Car at the End of the World" received airplay as one of 20 songs selected to be heard on the two-hour program. "I liked it... Tracy Chapman hasn't come out with a CD in awhile, so there's always a pocket to pick up, and she'd fit in perfectly there," and "This folk-rock, I liked it... and this could definitely find its way onto my Ipod." -- Diana DeGarmo, 2nd Place Finalist, 2003 American Idol and a guest judge for "The Best Song You Never Heard", commenting about "Car at the End of the World". "... East Bay's Hottest Emerging Artist KC Frogge does it again!" -- B.A.C.W. (Bay Area Community of Women) in their online events calendar for December 2005"She just came out of nowhere!" -- Mary Carouba, co-author with Susan Hagen of the groundbreaking 9/11 (September 11, 2001) book "Women at Ground Zero" and longtime host of the "First Fridays" women's salon performance series in Sebastapol, California. ...

| | Ian Galleghar Joy Control CD (2007)
International Herb music CDs
$12.55 I was born and raised in the L.A./Orange County area, and never really left it for any reason for about twenty years. Except for a couple weeks in Oklahoma and Yosemite, and maybe a day or two in Mexico or something. Beyond that not much else probably. So… I know I was in band at school for a time, and had a bass guitar (maybe two, can’t remember) and quite possibly, if my memory serves me correctly, surpassed the beginning stages on the clarinet. The only thing I know stuck with me, however, after junior high, was that the note with a hole in it last for four toe taps. If I had retained that knowledge and kept going with it, maybe I wouldn’t have to be learning about music now and could spend my time just taking tea and making pancakes. From a narrator’s perspective, it would be quickly ascertained that for the greater part of ...
