This Limited edition of AALIYAH includes a bonus DVD with music videos and behind the scenes footage. Aaliyah waited nearly five years to deliver her third album, but considering that she was essentially growing up -- it was the equivalent of spending time in college -- when she came back with an eponymous record in the summer of 2001, she came back strong. Aaliyah isn't just a statement of maturity and a stunning artistic leap forward, it's one of the strongest urban soul records of its time. Where such peers as Macy Gray and Jill Scott work too hard to establish their ties with classic soul, Aaliyah revels in the present, turning out a pan-cultural array of sounds, styles, and emotions. This sound is entirely unfamiliar -- part of the pleasure is how contemporary it sounds -- but she sounds just as comfortable within the sonicscapes of Timbaland as Missy Misdemeanor Elliott and, possibly, less self-conscious. Aaliyah never oversings, never oversells the songs -- this comes on easy and sultry, and there's a lot of substance here, in terms of the songwriting and the songs themselves. Urban albums rarely come any better than this, and there haven't been many records better than this in 2001, period. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Aaliyah's self-titled third album comes some five years after her sophomore effort ONE IN A MILLION. . The singer has obviously put her time out of the spotlight to good use. She's joined here by a few old friends, including Timbaland (a co-producer of her previous album who also shares some production credits here). For the most part this is a downtempo set, typified by the Missy Elliot-penned "I Care 4 U," a slice of old-school R&B that displays Aaliyah's sultry, fragile vocals to good advantage, and the Latin-inflected "Read Between the Lines." There's more depth to Aaliyah than her stock diva cover photos might suggest, as evidenced by the ambitious opus "I Refuse," which brings all the contradictions of a contemporary relationship into sharp relief, and the end-of-the affair "Those Were the Days," the lyrical and musical content of which reveal the singer's darker, more interesting side.Rolling Stone (8/2/01, pp.61-2) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...A near-flawless declaration of strength and independence....AALIYAH is CONTROL, VELVET ROPE and JAGGED LITTLE PILL all rolled into one..." Spin (8/01, pp.130,132) - 8 out of 10 - "...Deeper than anything she's delivered before...This is a hard record....the drama plays nonstop: slinky resistance, sideways flirtation, an edgy dance on the verge of getting it on..." Entertainment Weekly (7/27/01, p.70) - "...A largely up-tempo, thrillingly melodramatic set that again takes a melancholy...view of matters of the heart....the zingy hip-hop-textured musical tracks...echo the feverish passion of the lyrics..." Q (9/01, p.106) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Respectable rather than radical..." NME (Magazine) (12/29/01, p.59) - Ranked #39 in NME's 50 "Albums Of the Year 2001". NME (Magazine) (7/14/01, p.44) - 7 out of 10 - "...A gentle subversion of diva-dom....a graceful album...sensible, responsible, fractionally freaked in atmosphere..." Aaliyah
$9.99 Feat:Frankie Beverly. Incl. Capitol & Warner Bros.Hits.
Liner Note Author: Gail Mitchell. Along with a number of very welcome Maze album reissues, in 2004 The Right Stuff compiled what is no doubt the definitive single-disc collection of the Frankie Beverly-led band, titled simply yet accurately Greatest Hits. The 18-track compilation rounds up the four-minute single edits of such hits as "Southern Girl," "Joy and Pain," "Before I Let Go," "Never Let You Down," and "Back in Stride," among numerous others. Because many of these songs in their original states clock around seven or so minutes apiece, these single edits are preferable for a compilation such as this. This way you get as many hits as possible on the disc, and if you indeed like what you hear, you can always go and pick up the individual Maze albums, which are classics in their own right and mighty rewarding listens for lovers of late-'70s funk and early- to mid-'80s urban music. The Right Stuff, a division of Capitol Records, also went out of its way to license a few Maze songs owned by Warner Bros.: "Can't Get Over You" (1989), "Silky Soul" (1989), and "The Morning After" (1993). These latter-day recordings weren't quite as successful as the sort of songs Maze had been recording during the early '80s, but they're nonetheless great songs and an important part of the band's long-running career. All of this amounts to a well-rounded portrait of Maze, even including two live songs: the audience-singalong version of "Joy and Pain" from Live in New Orleans (1981) and a version of the band's signature ...

$27.09 Ever since the mid-'90s, that Glenn Hughes has been one busy gentleman. After sorting out his personal life, Hughes returned to recording and touring like a man possessed as he began cranking out album after album in a short period of time -- including 2003's Songs in the Key of Rock. And for those who thought that Hughes may begin mellowing after the aforementioned "downtime," the rip-roaring album opener, "In My Blood" (in which Hughes sounds quite a bit like ex-Deep Purple bandmate David Coverdale) will silence any doubters. Also included is a tribute to Hughes' old pal John Bonham on "Higher Places (Song for Bonzo)," as well as a song that sounds like the spitting image of Bonham's band, "Get You Stoned." Vocal-wise, Hughes sounds stronger than ever on Songs in the Key of Rock -- something that can't be said for some of his lead singer peers from the same classic rock era. ~ Greg Prato
Glenn Hughes - Songs In The Key of RockImported from Italy by Listening-Post MusicIf for some reason you are new to Glenn Hughes, his history is colorful. Stints with Trapeze, Deep Purple and Gary Moore were interspersed with stints in rehab. But Glenn has been dry for a decade now and is clearly in the best form of his life. He has released several great albums in recent years, but this has to be one of the best with close to one hour of SOLID ROCK!Be it be rock, hard rock, blues, funk or pop, Glenn Hughes knows no bounds. His variations between projects and guest spots always keep fans guessing, but keen too. There's rarely a let down as far as quality and there's never a dip in performance.Hailing from Cannock, England, Glenn Hughes is a vocalist/bass player/songwriter who has a long and distinguished career to his credit. He's best-known for his work with the bands Trapeze and Deep Purple in the early to mid 1970s, both of which were true pioneers in the hard rock genre. Trapeze enjoyed some success in America, and with Deep Purple, Glenn achieved worldwide superstardom and earned a place in rock history. After leaving Deep Purple in 1976, Glenn based himself in Los Angeles and released his first solo album, PLAY ME OUT. That album blended a mix of funk, soul, jazz, and pop with rock to create a unique sound which, along with Glenn's incredible vocal aptitude, set the stage for the diverse path his career would take in subsequent years and the singular, alluring style he would bring to all of his future work. Following the critical success of PLAY ME OUT, Glenn went on to work with many different artists, bands, and projects throughout the 1980s, notably Hughes/Thrall, Gary Moore, Phenomena, and Black Sabbath. In the 1990s, Glenn enjoyed a worldwide hit guesting with The KLF on a track called America: What Time Is Love?. Furthermore, he resurrected his solo career and released several distinct solo albums, including BLUES (1992), FROM NOW ON... (1994), BURNING JAPAN LIVE (1994), FEEL (1995), ADDICTION (1996), THE WAY IT IS (1999), RETURN OF CRYSTAL KARMA (2000), BUILDING THE MACHINE (2001), and SONGS IN THE KEY OF ROCK (2003)This is a magnificent hard rock album that sees Glenn pay tribute to his past work in Deep Purple, Trapeze and his 70's roots. Don't mistake what I have typed here -- this is an album of all new, all original material. Glenn's aim however, was to create a big 70's hard rock record and that he has done brilliantly. From Glenn's hair, to his clothes and the album cover. This is classic Hughes.Glenn has said that he is constantly approached by fans who love him for his work in Deep Purple, so why not satisfy those fans with a great classic hard rock record? As one could expect, the sound is a little rawer than the usual Hughes polish, but suits the music perfectly.Track By Track:In My Blood opens with a thud and after ...
| | Raphael Saadiq All Hits At The House Of Blues CD (2003) (Import) United Kingdom
Aaliyah
$18.39 Personnel: Raphael Saadiq (vocals, guitar); DJ Quik (DJ); D'Angelo (vocals); Rob Bacon, Little Charlie Bereal (guitar); Kelvin Wooter (tuba, keyboards); Dean "DC" Charles (keyboards); Preston Crump, Elijah Baker (bass); Kahari Parker (drums); David Garcia (percussion); Lejon Walker, Keisha Jackson, Wild Peach (background vocals); Tony Toni Tone, Devin The Dude, Joi, Ledisi, Goapele, Leslie Wilson. Recorded live at the House Of Blues, Los Angeles, California and at Blakeslee Recording Co., North Hollywood, California. No one can fault punters for being suspicious of hip-hop and nu soul live records; they've been ripped off too many times by technology -- leaving records sounding worse than carefully edited '70s rock albums. Singer/songwriter/producer Raphael Saadiq, formerly of Tony! Toni! Toné!, set some new standards in 2002 with his solo debut, Instant Vintage, in both songwriting and production standards, and this live date ups the ante as well. Over two CDs, Saadiq, a basic funk band with DJs, and some truly special guests tear up the House of Blues with a mix of old, new, tried, and true funky, punky nu soul jams. Offering a view of his entire 20-year career in the music biz, Saadiq kicks it solo (check the shivers he sends down your spine with "Ask of You") and with his old partners in Tony! Toni! Toné! for a seven-song mini-set. This isn't merely nostalgia, but displays the evolutionary process from the possibilities suggested by new jack swing as they evolved in Saadiq's musical iconography into his beautifully articulated brand of 21st century soul. Devin the Dude guests on "Just a Man" and Joi on "Copy Cat" and "Missing You," DJ Quick slips in for "Let's Get Down" (and Tony! Toni! Toné! is an added treat), Ledisi and Goapele are featured on "Different Times," and on the encore D'Angelo brings his tough, trouble man street soul to "Be Here." The happening thing about the guest performances is they actually add significantly to the show aspect of this as it plays on your CD player. This set grooves from start to finish with the honest, sensual, slippery funk that is nu soul's hope for the future. ~ Thom Jurek When Tony Toni Tone became a pop and R&B hit-making monster in the early-1990s, it was easy to forget the band possessed immense talent and thorough schooling in the jazz and the gospel of its forefathers. In 2002, longtime Tony Toni Tone frontman Raphael Saadiq's long-awaited and skillful debut, INSTANT VILLAGE, turned many a head with its chilling Sly-esque soul, perhaps giving mild surprise to casual listeners of his former band. A year later, Saadiq follows up his successful coming-out by revealing just how genuine ...
