Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the stock market--the '80s are back. The president of a major tobacco company decides to buy the company himself, but a bidding war ensues as other companies make their own offers. The ultimate Wall Street feeding frenzy of the go-go '80s is humorously rendered in this dramatization of the infamous leveraged buyout of RJR Nabisco.
F. Ross Johnson heads a group that makes a $17.6 billion bid to buy his own company, Nabisco. He personally stands to earn millions of dollars if the deal goes through. Henry Kravis, of the investment firm Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co., gets wind of the bid and makes a counter offer of $20 billion. The resulting charade of appalling greed and high-finance shenanigans was at the expense of workers and taxpayers. It is an amazing and sad commentary on American big business and the trendy corporate takeovers that defined the 1980s. The true story of R.J.R. Nabisco CEO F. Ross Johnson's attempted leveraged buyout of the company. Johnson and Henry Kravis, lbo master, lock horns in this capitalist battle royalle. Larry Gelbart was the head writer for the television series "M*A*S*H."
RJR Nabisco was eventually sold for $25 billion.
F. Ross Johnson, who lost his bid for Nabisco and therefore his job, earned $23 million (after taxes) from selling his stock in the company! Barbarians At The Gate Quotes/Excerpts: "All we want you to do, Ross, is make us as rich as possible." -- member of takeover group to F. Ross Johnson
"They earn money the old-fashioned way. They steal it." -- F. Ross Johnson (JAMES GARNER) on Wall Street

$9.69 Oliver Stone opened fire on the greed decade of the 1980s with this morality tale set on Wall Street. It stars Charlie Sheen as Bud Fox, an ambitious rookie stockbroker from a blue-collar background who is mesmerized by Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas), a Mephistophelean superbroker who specializes in corporate takeovers. Despite his initial resistance to Bud's entreaties, Gekko finally takes on the eager beaver as his protégé, schooling him in the kind of slash-and-burn maneuvers that have taken Gekko to the top. This style is far more attractive to Fox than the more prosaic but principled approach to investing preached ...
