Quasi is something of a pre-supergroup -- in 1998, both of its members received huge press attention with other projects (Sam Coomes with Built to Spill and Janet Weiss with Sleater-Kinney.) On Early Recordings, the two stay firmly on the American side of the '60s pop map, using a tight combination of drums, guitars and primitive synths along with production that strictly avoids the smoothed-over density of most contemporary recordings. Not only is the sound excellent -- a sort of lo-fi approach using hi-fi techniques -- the songwriting is brilliant enough to make it worthwhile, tripping though Elephant 6-ish retro-pop and thoroughly Northwestern indie rock constructions. The result is thoroughly inventive, but incredibly familiar as well -- it's as if Quasi has taken all of pop's commonplaces and turned them a few degrees in a new direction. ~ Nitsuh Abebe

The veteran blue-eyed soul singer has been busy since 1995 (the year he released his last literal pop album, Soul Survivor), recording albums of standards along with his Frank Sinatra and Bobby Darin-styled soundtrack work and counting the royalties from the 100 or so covers or samples of his best-known hit, "What You Won't Do for Love" -- so preoccupied, in fact, that's it's been easy to forget just how skilled he is at delivering easygoing romantic pop, whether it's funky and percussive (as on the brassy, bouncy "Call Me Up"), perfect for Latin salsa dancing (the balmy "Donna"), or ...
Scorpio Rising
Death In Vegas Scorpio Rising CD  (2003) Bonus Track; Japan

Early Recordings music CDs
CD $24.45
Additional personnel includes: Paul Weller, Dot Allison, Hope Sandoval, Nicola Kuperus, Susan Dillane (vocals). SCORPIO RISING is a 2003 release by U.K. big beat act Death In Vegas. For the duo's anticipated third album, Scorpio Rising, Death in Vegas has seemingly adopted the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" attitude, once again drawing from elements of gritty rock, techno repetition, and spacy psychedelia. On first listen, Scorpio Rising (the name is taken from a Kenneth Anger film) feels overly monotonous, as nearly every song quickly finds its groove and sticks with it from start to finish with little variety in the process. However, multiple listens reveal that not only is Scorpio Rising noticeably more upbeat overall than its gothic predecessor, but its diversity comes from the many genres and musical styles that it incorporates. It doesn't hurt either that the album also stars a new cast of guest musicians. Returning to the fold is Dot Allison ("Diving Horses"), who is joined by the likes of Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval ("Killing Smile" and "Help Yourself") and Woodbine's Susan Dillane ("Girls" and "23 Lies"), all of whom are delegated to contribute their breathy voices over lush psychedelic soundscapes for an effect that is reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine. Fittingly ...

Beautiful Tomorrow
Jason Laroy Beautiful Tomorrow CD  (2006)

Early Recordings album
CD $13.95
Acoustic guitar driven rock that's not afraid of a generous serving of distortion, but only when it's called for. Think Dave Matthews speeding down a highway with Kaki King riding shotgun and Ben Harper in the back seat, then slamming into the John Butler Trio, what comes out of the mayhem may just be the closest thing to the music of the Jason LaRoy Band. A Beautiful Tomorrow is the first full length effort from the Jason LaRoy Band which hails from the Denver, Colorado area and is fronted by Jason LaRoy. Originally influenced by more typical styles such as hard rock and metal, his interests have expanded over the years and he now plays music from a myriad of genres. During the late 1990's he achieved a significant level of success in the music industry with a band called The Quiet Room, who were signed to Metal Blade Records and sold thousands of discs world wide, touring internationally. Though much of his creative effort has been devoted to rock and metal, he has always had a fascination with acoustic music and its more natural, intimate feel. Jason is joined on this release by John Jeffers on drums and Josh Luebbers on electric and upright bass, making this a very powerful trio.

The vocals are also delivered by Jason. The vocal style is fairly straight forward and accessible, yet occasionally dark and subtly sarcastic. The lyrics can be best described as introspective, personal and on some tracks even political, for the most part firmly footed in reality, yet not afraid to wonder what if!His playing of acoustic guitar is somewhat unorthodox in that he plays many of his songs using both hands on the fret board. He calls it his slap/tap technique but has also referred to it as the anything goes technique. Of this technique he says, "I don't believe that there is one right way to approach playing the guitar." This is not to say that Jason ...

World Circus
Toxik World Circus CD  (1987)

CD $12.19  5 stars Audio Samples
New York City's Toxik were a "band" in name only, since it was really guitar-masturbating wünderkind Josh Christian composing most all of their songs and the endless flurry of bumblebee notes scattered all over their breathless 1988 debut, World Circus. Sure enough, album opener "Heart Attack" propels thrash metal of such a frenzied nature at singer Mike Sanders that he truly seems to be experiencing a massive coronary while trying to enunciate all of those lyrics in his improbably high vocal range. ...
