Capturing Bob Marley and the Wailers at their creative peak, BABYLON BY BUS is a righteously grooving collection of recordings from the group's 1978 European tour. An excellent companion to 1975's JAH LIVE, BABYLON BY BUS includes energetic versions of several tracks from the classic 1977 album EXODUS as well as a sprinkling of earlier material. The album is a textbook study in reggae's sultry rhythmic power, and the Barrett Brothers (Aston "Family Man" Barrett on bass and Carlton on drums) demonstrate throughout why they are regarded as one of the most influential rhythm sections of all time. Although the majority of Marley's material is intensely political, the music is so full of light, space and subtle dynamics that the worries of the world seem to be instantly replaced by an overwhelming urge to dance. Often audibly whipping the crowd into a joyful frenzy, Marley and company present a fine example of live music- making at it's purest and most soulful.

Babylon By Bus album
$10.39 Additional personnel includes: Rita Marley, Marcia Griffiths, Judy Mowatt (background vocals).
Out on his own following the defection of Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh, this album saw Marley utilizing the talents of the I-Threes for the first time. There was still a nod to his past in the inclusion of a cover version of a Wailers tune, "Lively Up Yourself," but elsewhere he revelled in his new found freedom, on "Revolution" and most particularly, "No Woman, No Cry," which has practically become a Jamaican national ...

An interesting collection of singles and posthumously archived material created in the same way as Hendrix's CRASH LANDING and The Beatles "Free as a Bird," (albeit with most of the original musicians), CONFRONTATION is more consistent than one would expect and includes at least one ...

| | Dewey Redman Choices CD (1992)
Babylon By Bus album
$10.69 This is a curious set for saxophonist Dewey Redman, featuring a killer band that includes bassist Cameron Brown, drummer Leon Parker, and the first appearance of his son, Joshua, on tenor in duet on a couple of tracks. Redman himself is in fine form, playing with all of the deep, steamy lyricism he showcased so brilliantly with Ornette Coleman and in Old and New Dreams, but there is something else too, as evidenced by the track selection, and that is a new reverence for the tradition. Redman was always a melodic player, even in his most fiery avant encounters, but his love for jazz tradition, particularly its formalist considerations, was never really apparent until now. Here Redman selects the nugget "Everything Happens to Me" as the place to showcase his reverential balladic style. Over the course of ten minutes, he allows the hidden blues in the tune to come out and haunt him as he explores each nuance with minimal accompaniment. Also, the Van Heusen nugget "Imagination" is read here with such eloquence, grace, and heartbreaking sensitivity that it's almost a blues. The melodic invention Redman displays here makes this version a contender for being the definitive one. The Eastern edge is here in "O'Besso," with Joshua playing tenor and Dewey playing musette. It begins as a modal Eastern theme onto which the changes are gradually built. The melody seeps out, almost unexpectedly, and becomes a flower of interwoven harmonic figures traded between father ...
| | Mykal Somer Element Of Surprise CD (2003)
Babylon By Bus CD music
$14.79 This is a promising, if imperfect, debut effort from a gifted young roots reggae singer. Hailing from the Caribbean island of St. Kitts, Mykal Somer started his singing career at the age of 17; ten years later, his first album finds him working with producer Michael Fanus to create backing rhythms that split the difference between roots and dancehall styles with mostly effective results, though sometimes the resulting sound is a bit mechanical and enervated. Highlights include a fine combination track (with deejay Prospec) entitled "Time Don't Wait" and the spare and rootsy "Mama Miga." Less impressive are "History," the lyrics to which seem to have been written on the mistaken idea that everyone has forgotten about Bob Marley and Jacob Miller, and "Who Is Babylon," in which Somer accuses Babylon of covering up the fact that cigarettes cause cancer. The remix of "Element of Surprise," similarly, is not creative or unique enough to be worth the time it's given. Not bad overall. ...

$14.35 Let's just come right out and say it: no band has modernized traditional Celtic music as successfully as Capercaillie, and none has had such a consistent run of top-notch releases. That they've done so over the course of roughly 20 years is nothing short of astounding. On Roses and Tears, as with all of the best of their previous ...
