Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen (2001, Sterling Sound, New York, New York)
Marley is in a mellow and happy mood as the album opens with "excuse me while I light my spliff" on "Easy Skanking" and maintains the feeling throughout. "Kaya" has one of the best bass riffs of any Marley song (played by the wonderful Aston "Family Man" Barrett). The hit single "Is This Love" is included and he sounds upbeat singing "She's Gone," although the subject is that his lover has just left him. Nothing fazed him; he was able to address political and emotional subjects with the same degree of feeling and his manner was truly saintly. KAYA is one of his finest moments.
Kaya continues what has become an unspoken tradition in the evolution of Bob Marley & the Wailers' discography -- blending Western sounds and motifs with the icons and traditions from the very core of Jamaican society. In fact, the very word "kaya" is synonymous with marijuana in Rastafarian culture. Likewise, the album Kaya could be easily construed as an open love letter or musical paean to the lifestyle that Marley so eagerly embraced and promoted. Themes of commonality and unity pervade this release more so than previous albums. Likewise, the overt political stances that had become somewhat of a moniker for Marley & the Wailers are temporarily replaced by timeless compositions, such as the eternally optimistic "Easy Skanking" and "Is This Love." Marley had not -- as some proclaimed -- gone soft, however. The light -- at times practically giddy -- rhythms on "Satisfy My Soul" contrast the darker, brooding sonic and lyrical images on "Running Away." The most pressing issues Marley deals with involve ever-increasing spiritual consciousness. Throughout Kaya, humble thanks is offered to, as well as guidance sought from, Jah -- evidence that the spirituality that permeates the Wailers' music is real and not lip service. Kaya could be considered the oasis before the political and personal eruptions that would inform and influence Marley & the Wailers' next studio releases, Survival and Uprising. The 2001 Definitive Remasters edition of Kaya also includes the non-LP "Smile Jamaica." Although initially issued as the flip side of "Satisfy My Soul," the song was recorded more than a year prior to this album, resulting in a somewhat odd juxtaposition. ~ Lindsay Planer

Kaya album
$10.39 Additional personnel includes: Rita Marley, Marcia Griffiths, Judy Mowatt (background vocals).
Out on his own following the defection of Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh, this album saw Marley utilizing the talents of the I-Threes for the first time. There was still a nod to his past in the inclusion of a cover version of a Wailers tune, "Lively Up Yourself," but elsewhere he revelled in his new found freedom, on "Revolution" and most particularly, "No Woman, No Cry," which has practically become a Jamaican national anthem since its release. If that song had an instantly universal appeal, Rasta themes were also brilliantly conveyed via "Them Belly Full (But We Hungry)" and "Rebel Music (Three O'Clock Roadblock)." Marley had announced himself as one of the greats of modern music.

Kaya CD music
$10.49 RASTAMAN VIBRATION's burlap-esque jacket design couldn't be more appropriate packaging-this is a load of Natty knowledge delivered in simple, raw fashion. And there's a real beauty in the weave. This 1976 release finds Bob dropping ever more lyrics on human entanglements both local and global, his transcendent voice threading wisdom through it all.
"Positive Vibration" and "Roots, Rock, Reggae" are anthemic in character, inviting all listeners to quit their negativity and start a-dancin'. "Want More" is a promise of bad karma for back-biters everywhere, leadened fearfully by solemn bass lines and seamless production. Perhaps most compelling here is "War," a musical setting of a 1968 speech on global justice by the Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia. Bob's echoing fade with the words, "Good ...

An interesting collection of singles and posthumously archived material created in the same way as Hendrix's CRASH LANDING and The Beatles "Free as a Bird," (albeit with most of the original musicians), CONFRONTATION is more consistent than one would expect and includes at least one certified classic in "Buffalo Soldier." The record features some very tasty guitar, good vocal performances and the always rock-steady rhythm section of the Barrett brothers. While not absolutely essential, it should certainly be the next purchase for anyone who already owns all of the official Marley ...

Bob Marley And The Wailers' seventh studio album finds the masterful Jamaican singer turning his attentions away from purely domestic Caribbean matters to the African continent. His songs had previously often cited Africa as both an influence and a final spiritual destination for Rastafarians; RASTAMAN VIBRATION's "War" had even named a laundry ...

| | Innocence Mission Birds Of My Neighborhood CD (1999) Reissue
Kaya album
$9.49 Principally recorded at the Keppel Building, Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
Thirteen years after recording their debut, the Innocence Mission remains an island of calm, a beacon of hope in a chaotic world. From the quiet city of Lancaster, PA, the three members of the Innocence Mission make their music, all of it exalting love and friendship, peace and joy. Here, group founders and songwriters Don Peris (guitar/vocals) and Karen Peris (vocals/guitar/piano), along with Mike Bitts (bass), have handcrafted their fourth album, Birds of My Neighborhood. Karen Peris was also featured on Natalie Merchant's album Ophelia, adding her mystical voice on a few tracks. ~ Amanda Nusbaum
THE INNOCENCE MISSION HAS NEVER been concerned with image or posturing but has chosen instead to concentrate solely on their music. This is more evident than ever on the group's release, Birds Of My Neighborhood. The departure of drummer Steve Brown and the decision not to replace him has meant that the group's backbone and sound coloring now come from the acoustic guitars of Karen and Don Peris. Their recording is so sparse and intimate that it sounds like a group of friends playing in a living room, and this approach perfectly frames the wistful sentiments expressed in the songs. The Innocence Mission was formed by Karen and Don with Brown and Mike Bitts while they were attending high school in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Don and Karen started dating the first summer they met and often played their guitars together. As Don says, "it's romantic and inexpensive." Even in their earliest years, the band's sound was centered around Karen's heart-felt vocals and introspective songwriting. A&M records signed the band in 1989 and released an eponymous debut that is considered to be a classic among die-hard fans. They recorded two more albums for A&M, Umbrella (1991) and Glow (1995), toured with acts like Natalie Merchant, and appeared at the Lillith Fair in 1999. The later signed with RCA and began recording and producing their own albums. Many of the songs on Birds of My Neighborhood employ merely a pair of soft acoustic guitars. Others add a bit of bass or a tap of percussion. The production makes the most of every instrument, creating a surprisingly clean and spacious sound, with each instrument made to glisten. The dry instrumentation contrasts nicely ...
