The romantic singer Simone has good moments in the samba "Danadinho Danado" (Martinho da Vila/Zé Catimba), in the subtle rendition for "Elegia," in the warm "Espere Por Mim, Morena" (Gonzaguinha), in the swinging "Procissao" (by Gilberto Gil, here with the strong rhythmic support of the Bahian female percussionists of the Didá Music School), in Johnny Alf's "O Que É Amar," in Chico Buarque's samba "Quem Te Viu, Quem Te Vê" and batucada "Noite Dos Mascarados," and in the Brazilian folk rendition for "Entre O Sim E O Nao" (Joao Donato/Abel Silva). Simone, generically a singer with powerful expressive possibilities wasted in a minor romantic repertoire or manipulative renditions, here she manages to keep a balance between her commercial approach and artistic wishes, representing a good album in her discography. ~ Alvaro Neder

Emerald Land is David McCabe’s first album of original music, and as should be obvious from the title it has an Irish theme. Although English, he has Irish ancestry and says all his favourite artists come from Ireland — Gary Moore, Enya and U2 - and the album is something of an homage to them. The album really evolved from the title track, which was written first, and most of the others were inspired whilst visiting the country. His instrument is the electric guitar, and Gary Moore’s influence is obvious on these tracks, along with something of Enya’s synthesizers and backing voices, and traditional Irish music.
