Originally released on Atlantic (602). Includes liner notes by Alec Wilder and Gary Kramer. Personnel: Mabel Mercer (vocals). Liner Note Author: Mary Ellen Mason. Good two-record anthology that features outstanding cabaret vocalist Mabel Mercer. Her approach was brillant, but not for everyone; it was stiff by jazz phrasing standards, and put far more emphasis on technique than feeling. Yet, few have been better at doing highly stylized material. ~ Ron Wynn Art Of Mabel Mercer Music Art Of Mabel Mercer Songs Art Of Mabel Mercer Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Required listening for Cabaret Songs 101 This is quitessential Mabel Mercer. I first heard the LP
in the late 50's and life's been better ever since. But beware: don't go here if you want cutsy songs, or dumber than dumb lyrics that aren't brilliant.. or songs that are masked in big arrangements or songs that don't make you thin. Wow! One of Mabel's greatest talents was her searching out and singing songs that are like a fine port wine: songs by greats like Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Alec Wilder, Cy Coleman, Kurt Weill, Rodgers & Hart, & Hammerstein, Bart Howard, Johny Mercer, Harold Arlen, Ira Gershwin, and many more. Some of her songs were pulled from musicals before they hit Broadway. But Mabel found them and made them live. If you're young, take a listen and see if Mabel can touch your heart as she does my 70 year old one. It might work.

ABSOLUTELY THE GREATEST! Mabel Mercer is absolutely the greatest cabaret singer of them all time. Yes, it's an so-so-recording and not her best, and several songs (of the 28) are forgetable. And it's certainly old-fashioned, conjuring memories of well-mannered people in supper clubs in 30s and 40s Manhattan (and what's so bad about that?].
Mabel is an acquired taste; there's no one quite like her. The only singer as distinctive these days is Blossom Dearie. Mabel transformed lyrics -- Just One of Those Things, Remind Me, While We're Young -- into stories and sometimes poetry.
Listen up a few times. Slow down with Mabel. If you're lucky she'll be your friend for life. Submitted by a reviewer (Oakland, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Art Of Mabel Mercer
$12.35 STELLAR REGIONS consists of Coltrane's entire February 15, 1967 recording session. All selections were previously unavailable--except "Offering," which appeared on EXPRESSION. Personnel: John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Alice Coltrane (piano); Jimmy Garrison (bass); Rashied Ali (drums). Producers: John Coltrane, Bob Thiele. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on February 15, 1967. Includes liner notes by David A. Wild. Personnel: John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Alice Coltrane (piano); Rashied Ali (drums). Liner Note Author: David Wild. Recording information: Van Gelder Studios, Englewood Cliffs, NJ (02/15/1967). Photographers: Chuck Stewart; Jim Marshall . This is a major set, "new" music from John Coltrane that was recorded February 15, 1967, (five months before his death) but not released for the first time until 1995. One of several "lost" sessions that were stored by Alice Coltrane for decades, only one selection ("Offering" which was on Expression) among the eight numbers and three alternates was ever out before. The music, although well worth releasing, offers no real hints as to what Coltrane might have been playing had he lived into the 1970s. The performances by the quartet (with pianist Alice Coltrane, bassist Jimmy Garrison, and drummer Rashied Ali) are briefer (from two-and-a-half to five-plus minutes) than Coltrane's recordings of the previous year, but that might have been due to the fact that this music was played in the studio (as opposed to the marathon live blowouts with Pharoah Sanders) or to Coltrane's worsening health. Actually 'Trane (who sticks exclusively to tenor here) is as powerful as usual, showing no compromise in his intense flights, and indulging in sound explorations that are as free (but with purpose) as any he had ever done. Coltrane's true fans will want to go out of their way to acquire this intriguing CD. ~ Scott Yanow Producer Bob Thiele had the foresight to realize that John Coltrane's creative arc was ascendant, allowing ...
