John McCrea's off-key, languid half-rap, half-croon rambles over horn-laden indie-rock and crashes into Mariachi-band melodies while he dashes off less patently goofy than off-kilter lyrics such as "with fingernails that shine like justice." It's a formula that doesn't sound like a sure success for one album, let alone a slew, yet COMFORT EAGLE would bring Sacramento band Cake's total to four overwhelmingly catchy albums over six years.
Perhaps due to the pop crossover of singles like "The Distance" and "Never There," it's easy to forget that Cake is stylistically closer to Pavement than to all the fly-by-night goof-rock bands. While McCrea's lyrics are winking, referential, hyper-self-aware, and occasionally smug or silly, they also wind appealingly, wax cleverly, and are highly memorable; not a word seems out of place. COMFORT EAGLE abounds with hooks from the trickling keyboards of the magnificent and oblique "Meanwhile Rick James..." to their ubiquitous alluring trumpet on opening single "Short Skirt/Long Jacket" and the emphatic catch-phrase "he is calling you dude" lining the title track. For COMFORT EAGLE, Cake is back at their full complement of five with the integration of guitarist Xan McCurdy into the fold and the tightness flows through this hearty and eclectic record.

Rolling Stone (8/16/01, p.102) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Cake's formula is tighter than ever....Eras jumble and jostle...The best songs exhibit a modern pop that is both mechanized and organic...their sound is highly developed and virtually unique..." Comfort Eagle Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Great CD, I can't stop listening! I originally bought this just for the song 'Short Skirt/Long Jacket', but there are a ton of other great songs on here. 'Meanwhile, Rick James...', 'Love You Madly', and 'Comfort Eagle' are all really unique songs. My favorite is 'Commissioning a Symphony in C'. It has melodies that will blow your mind. More Great Music From Cake If you liked the previous Cake albums, you will like his one. Comfort Eagle is not quite as sardonic as Prolonging the Magic, but it still has all the elements that Cake fans have come to enjoy. Vince DiFiore's timing and skill with the trumpet are again impeccable, as is the other signature Cake sound, John McCrea's vocals. Lyrics are typical, amusing, sometimes political commentaries on what goes on all around us. This is a very catchy, very enjoyable album that I am content to listen to over and over again. The first song released from the album was "Short Skirt/Long Jacket" so give that a listen here if you have not already heard it, then listen to "Love You Madly." If it is not scheduled for release as a single soon, then it should be. Submitted by a reviewer (Arlington, VA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
"The Band" Cake's continued success at poking light of social commentary and commonplace experiences makes them one of a kind. Their lyrics never shy away from a good laugh, and many recent performances have been awesome. Follow this band, cuz they just keep getting better and better throughout their careers. Without the Pretty Pink Ribbon Well, Cake's new album Comfort Eagle is finally in stores. With it's eleven song playlist, this cd is bound to have you hitting the repeat button a few times. With the vidoe hit, Short Skirt/Long Jacket, leading the way for this album, it's almost exciting when you find the other tunes on the track just as awesome. If you do get a hold of this cd, make sure you check out number 9, Love You Madly, it is definatlely a great song for summer. I particularily enjoy this album when i'm in the car, because it is so awakening and most of it uplifting.
Overall, Comfort Eagle is an excellent choice for summer listening, and will definately be resurfing with it's many different sound on a few good radio stations. Submitted by silverpointe (St Catharines) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Comfort Eagle music CDs
$18.99 Although she's been performing since the early '90s, vocalist Patrice Pike is perhaps best known for her appearance on the 2006 reality TV show Rockstar: Supernova where she competed to become the lead singer of a supergroup which included Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee. Labeled the "soccer mom" by some viewers underwhelmed by her low-key, somewhat detached stage presence, Pike in truth is a journeyman performer who has recorded professionally with various bands over the years, including Sister 7 who were signed to Arista in the late' 90s. Recorded prior to Patrice Pike's appearance on Rockstar, Unraveling is a solid if somewhat unremarkable post-show "debut" and fourth solo album for the singer/songwriter. Not surprisingly, the criticism most often leveled at Pike by the band that she was a bit boring and lacked a strong personality is basically the main problem here. These are workmanlike songs that find Pike moving from post-grunge and neo-psychedelic rockers to funky neo-soul anthems. Primarily, Unraveling reveals her as she was on the show, as a straight-ahead, adult alternative rock singer heavily influenced by such similarly minded artists as 4 Non Blondes, Alanis Morissette and Sarah McLachlan. While none of the songs really stand out here, they are still heartfelt, organic, and original compositions that should appeal to fans of '90s alt rock. ~ Matt Collar
CBS RockStar Supernova writes “In both music and life, Patrice Pike truly is the real deal.“ when describing the Top 7 performer during this summer’s highly rated TV show. Patrice’s original song “Beautiful Thing” from her upcoming CD Unraveling debuted on the show to rave reviews. Many people have come to know Patrice Pike from her years as lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist for the popular Austin band Sister Seven.Patrice and Sister Seven toured the United States and Western Europe in support of three independent releases and three major label albums. From Sister Sevens jam-band beginnings to their Billboard-charting radio singles, they headlined clubs and supported major event tours.Over the years Patrice Pike has been performing on stage with many artists including Dave Matthews, ...

$9.59 Directed and guided by Dove Award nominee producer CR Pendleton (John Reuben, Jeff Anderson, House of Heroes, Toby Mac, Relient K), brothers Robbie and Ronnie Lee are storming onto the Atlanta scene, leaving everyone who hears them wanting more. Since the group’s genesis in 2003, House of Thomas has continued to prove themselves in front of audiences and judges alike. In only their second live performance ever, they were presented with the third place award for overall musicianship and vocal abilities at a record label sponsored talent show. Five months later, the group moved the judges once again and took the first place award for best group performance at the North Georgia Gospel Talent Search sponsored by Crown Day Promotions and PHD Studios. In June 2006, House of Thomas released their first full-length album entitled “Without a Doubt!” produced by CR Pendleton. Throughout this album, House of Thomas features a uniquely pervasive pop-rock sound with diverse influences ranging from The Beatles, Steven Curtis Chapman, Bon Jovi, and U2, to the Newsboys, Collective Soul, Keith Urban, and Third Day. With a combination of flowing guitar riffs and resonating melodies, House of Thomas brings a splash of vibrancy to their music. A review from GARAGEBAND.COM ...
