Wit review Product Description
Wit movie was released Sep 11, 2001 by the Warner Home Video studio. Vivian Bearing is a disciplined English professor who finds her rational approach to life overturned when she is diagnosed with cancer. No longer a teacher, but a subject for others to study, Vivian is about to discover a fine line between life and death that can only be walked with wit.
Margaret Edson's Pulitzer-winning script is faithfully adapted to the small screen by director Mike Nichols and star Emma Thompson in this HBO special Wit video. Thompson plays Vivian Bearing, a professor of 17th Century poetry specializing in "the Holy Sonnets of John Donne." The intellect is everything to Vivian--which is why, when she is diagnosed with stage four ovarian cancer--"there is no stage five"--she agrees to undergo aggressive chemotherapy in the name of cancer research. "You must be very tough," her doctor tells her, and Vivian is nothing if not tough--a tough professor who is tough on her students. Yet as her treatment--and her cancer--progresses, Vivian finds that what she needs most isn't the cold rationality with which she's lived her whole life and which is amply evidenced by the hospital staff attending her, but the simple human kindness shown by her primary nurse and her former mentor. ...See Full Description

| Moving! Wit film What a great, moving film. It really hit home... I am a nursing student. My clinical instructor had us watch this movie one day after clinicals. It really moved all of us students, to be able to feel the patient, to really be at one with what the patient is experiencing. It really connected me emotionally and I cried a great deal. | Emma Thompson was robbed How did she not win an Academy Award for this performance. Congratulations too to Mike Nicholls - what a team! By deboerjudith2 (Southport, Qld, Australia) |

| Phenominal Wit review I am 16 years old, and my class and I were to watch the movie in Writer's Craft class and to write a reflection of the Power of Words used in this movie; they are powerful. I enjoyed this movie so much. many of the class mates were crying along with me. This is a very moving film that I strongly recommend. Not only are you seeing how it is to go through cancer, you are seeing a true writer. I could watch this movie over and over, and everytime I will enjoy and appreiciate even more! I can not wait to purchase this movie once I find it. By little_leprechaun10 (North Bay, Ontario, Canada) |
| Extremely Intellectual and Intellectually Simplistic I am an English major and I absolutely ADORED this film because of the layers of ideas that are expressed. Often when the actors are speaking about an idea or a subject they are in reality speaking about the very situation that is going on, the irony is that they themselves do not realize it. It is both an expression of human emotion surrounding death and an abstract study of the subject. Much like the professors own life has been-she spent her whole life studying the abstract concept of death through the poet Donne and now she is actually experiencing the reality! It is a wonderfully crafted literary triumph!!!!! By ivoryjoliene (Newark, Delaware) |
