Original score by Danny Elfman. Initial pressings of PLANET OF THE APES will include a collectors' Topps trading card. PLANET OF THE APES was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack Album For A Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media. Personnel: Emerson Swinford (guitar). Audio Mixer: Dennis Sands. Audio Remixer: Paul Oakenfold . Recording information: Newman Scoring Stage at Twentieth Century Fox. For Tim Burton's "reimagining" of Planet of the Apes, Danny Elfman produced a dynamic, thundering score filled with powerhouse brass and percussion. Fundamentally based around a rising three-note motif, the score opens with the extended "Main Titles," then launches straight into the standout "Ape Suite #1," an overture-like introduction to the main elements of the score. Another terrific cue is "The Hunt," a whirling descent into the heart of the story filled with jungle rhythms and battling brass and underscored by throbbing electronics. Unlike Jerry Goldsmith's groundbreaking score for the original Planet of the Apes, Elfman's music remains centered around a tonal base, branching into some extended percussion passages but never breaking into the atonality that was so effective in Goldsmith's work. A few quiet moments occur between orchestral eruptions, but this is primarily loud, propulsive action music. Only Paul Oakenfold's "Rule the Planet Remix" seems out of place. ~ Neil Shurley Reunited with director Tim Burton for his highly anticipated take on THE PLANET OF THE APES, Grammy-winning and Oscar-nominated composer Danny Elfman takes a dark and sinister approach towards this struggle between man and beast. Working with a story that finds Mark Wahlberg's Air Force pilot Leo Davidson falling through a worm hole in space and landing on a planet ruled by talking simians, Elfman's simmering tempo builds into a gradual crescendo to set the table for "Deep Space Launch." Before long, the string arrangements that were bubbling under the surface give way to thunderous timpani and marauding brass that continue on into "The Hunt." Much like his predecessor Jerry Goldsmith, (who scored the original movie, Elfman expertly utilizes the lower end of the brass section and clanging percussion for a sense of foreboding terror in cuts like "Ape Suite #2," "Preparing For Battle," and "The Battle Begins." Superstar club DJ Paul Oakenfold contributes "Rule The Planet Remix," a non-Elfman cut that rides a big beat spiced up with film dialogue, blips and beeps. Once again, Burton and Elfman come off as the darker flipside to Steven Spielberg and John Williams.
