Good But Overpriced With both THX and DTS logos on the cover as well as the unusually high price tag on this concert DVD one would reasonably expect an incredible audio/video experience. Not so however. The video is very clean and although shot about 20 years ago it looks very good. Not amazingly good, but very good. The shots tend to stay on the performers longer than the usual 2 second maximum that is all too common on concert videos these days, so that is a good thing. The sound is surprisingly wanting however. If you were to compare the sound to what would be typical of any currently recorded concert DVD then this one is sub-par. If you take into account that it was recorded 20 years ago and are willing to make allowances for that then you won't be too disappointed. The performance itself is very good. There are moments where it excites and moments where it drags but averaged out it is certainly quite good.
Freddie Mercury does a strip-tease of sorts starting off fully clothed and as the concert progresses takes off his jacket, then shirt, then finally strips down to just a pair of short shorts and bare feet for the last couple of songs. Some may feel this is entertaining, however I found it vain and self-glorifying and it detracted from the performance. Freddie's voice is excellent and that comes through on this concert. Brian May’s guitar playing ranges from virtuoso to slightly sloppy and clarity sometimes suffers. Most of the time it is adequately upfront and clear. Unfortunately, there are quite a few squeals from mic feedback throughout the concert -not continually but enough to be distracting at times. If the price on this DVD was more in line with other concert DVDs (that's Pioneer Video's fault) then this would be a satisfying DVD, but since it is priced so much higher than usual we have the right to expect more than the usual but get simply good video and performance and average (at best) sound. It will be hard to imagine someone feeling that this DVD was a good buy. If you are a die hard Queen fan and have money to burn then you'll be satisfied. Everyone else should spend their money on a newer recording of a group that they really like that will in all likelihood be cheaper, and better in both video and certainly in sound quality. Final verdict: Ultimately disappointing only because of the high price. Submitted by a reviewer (Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
