Top-notch hard bop is performed by pianist Cedar Walton's quartet, a group also including altoist Vincent Herring (who doubles on flute), bassist David Williams, and drummer Kenny Washington. An underrated composer, Walton performs five of his own pieces, plus four standards (including "Body and Soul" and "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes"). Herring's Cannonball Adderley-inspired alto is well featured, and Kenny Washington fits right into Billy Higgins' old slot. Easily recommended for fans of modern straight-ahead jazz. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Stan Getz Bossas & Ballads: The Lost Sessions CD (2003)
Promise Land
$15.39 First off, these "Lost Sessions" were never actually lost. The music here was supposed to be released as the Stan Getz Quartet's first issue on A&M, and for the usual record company reasons, it was shelved instead. The tapes were in the vault and catalogs, so it's not like they were found in someone's closet. The bottom line is that Getz, already ill at this point, still had the goods. Produced by Herb Alpert (a genius in his own right even if his records don't always hold up), the bossas here are tough, innovative jazz tunes mainly written by Getz's pianist, Kenny Barron. Don't look for the gentle side of Getz that was so beautifully displayed on his early bossa records with Charlie Byrd and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Instead, this is the man who had reinvented his playing technique. With a strong foil in Barron, Getz was free to explore his form of melodic improvisation to a fuller and wider extent, which is evident if you simply check out his solos on Barron's "Sunshower" and "El Sueno," and Mal Waldron's classic ballad "Soul Eyes." Interestingly, this was Barron's date as much as it was Getz's. His compositions and musical ...
| | Kenny Barron Perfect Set: Live At Bradley's 2 CD (2005)
Promise Land
$13.85 Bradley's was a legendary New York City jazz club that for 25 years acted as a gathering place for many of the Big Apple's top musicians, a place to hang out. In 1996, the Kenny Barron Trio dug in before the illustrious audience and played at their best. Barron and drummer Ben Riley were members of Sphere, a quartet (with tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse and bassist Buster Williams) that initially paid tribute to Thelonious Monk. On this trio set, "The Only One" is based on Monk's "Hackensack," Barron takes Thelonious' "Shuffle Boil" as an unaccompanied piano ...

Promise Land
$20.59 DJ and big band leader Al Reusch started the independent label Aragon Records in Vancouver in 1946 and throughout the '50s and '60s he turned out an impressive series of country boogie, rockabilly, and early rock & roll 78s, 45s and LPs, most of them by performers who never enjoyed much more than regional success on the imprint. These obscure acts deserved much more than that, though, as this wonderful and revelatory 28-track compilation makes clear, and sides like Keray Regan's "Vibratin'," a pure percolating delight, and Patty Surbey's irresistible novelty song "(I Want) A Beatle for Christmas" seem like they should have been massive hits (Terry Jacks' "Seasons in the Sun" -- not included here -- from 1974 was Aragon's biggest success and it remains the biggest hit ever from a Canadian label). Other bright spots collected here include the garage proto-surf instrumental "Rebel Rock" by, who else, the Rebel Rockers, "Honey Strollin'" by local legends the Prowlers, and a quite credible version of Chuck Berry's "Too Much Monkey Business" by Little Daddie and the Bachelors, who just happen to be Tommy Chong's very first band (pre-Cheech, of course). Germany's Bear Family Records are masters at recognizing, locating, compiling and annotating these kinds of anthologies, and this one is no exception. Listed as volume one, here's hoping that more volumes from the Aragon vaults arrive soon. Reusch frequently licensed his recordings to other imprints, so undoubtedly several ...
