This long out-of-print Famous Door album was finally reissued by the Progressive label nearly 30 years after its initial release. Bill Watrous has long been known as one of jazz's top trombonists (having a beautiful tone and a very fluent command of the bebop vocabulary) and it is always a joy to hear veterans tenor saxophonist Al Cohn, pianist Hank Jones, bassist Milt Hinton, and drummer Steve Gadd. However, the biggest surprise of this set is the brilliant playing of the vastly underrated trumpeter Danny Stiles, who often competes with Watrous for solo honors. The original five-song program, which includes "Just Friends" (mistakenly credited to John Klemmer rather than John Klenner!) and a lengthy "Snafu," is expanded slightly with the inclusion of a second (and previously unreleased) version of Watrous' "Don't Tell Me What To Do." A fine bebop date most notable for the playing of the late Danny Stiles. ~ Scott Yanow

Originally released on the Famous Door label, this album was recorded from 1972-73 and features Watrous' Combo with flugelhorn/trumpeter Danny Stiles. Bill's trombone playing on straight ballads is just plain beautiful, and his style fits perfectly toget

Recorded from 1972-1973.

Personnel: Bill Watrous (trombone); Al Cohn (tenor saxophone); Danny Stiles (trumpet, flugelhorn); Hank Jones (piano); Milt Hinton (bass); Steve Gadd (drums).

5 stars Watrous is amazing!
This and "Wildlife Manhattan Refuge" are my two favorite recordings of his. This CD was recorded in 1972 and 1973. In his younger days he did not play as many notes as he does now. I enjoyed his ideas and transitions more than his recent recordings. He has always been an animal!

3 stars Sounds straight ahead
I think Watrous's sound was better in those days, less clinical ! he is an all time monster and familiarity breeds contempt but the fuller sound has to my ears been lost in recent years and the intonation is better during recordings of this period.

5 stars What a front line.
If anyone ever tells Watrous that you can't do that on trombne, he's in trouble. He plays stuff that few can.Danny Stiles is an under-recorded,underrated player.Add Al and it can't get any better than that. Two words for this cd---BUY IT!

Belinda Carlisle has followed an interesting trajectory over the years, from youthful garage punk to new wave-pop diva (fronting the Go-Gos) to adult contemporary solo artist. Given her many phases, it shouldn't be too much of a curveball to learn that VOILA, Carlisle's first solo album in 10 years, is an homage to the French chanson tradition. Yet it's somehow odd to hear Carlisle singing entirely in French, and taking on the songs of Edith Piaf, Francoise Hardy, and Serge Gainsbourg. But Carlisle pulls the project off with panache: VOILA is executed with sophistication and skill. The excellent selection of material is the bedrock of the album (Jacques Brel's "Ne Me Quitte Pas," for example, is a highlight), but the genre-splicing arrangements, and guests like Brian Eno and Hothouse Flowers, keep things fresh. Still, it's Carlisle's show, and her interpretations of these French classics make this unique album a worthy listen. Belinda Carlisle's career has had several twists and turns, but none has been quite as interesting as her 2007 album Voila, a collection of luxurious covers of classic French pop tunes, all ...

Je T'Aime Encore
Parker, Elsie & The Poor People Of Paris Je T'Aime Encore CD  (2009)

Bone Straight Ahead songs
CD $17.19
The Poor People of Paris was originally formed in the mid-eighties by French singer/multiple woodwind player Elsie Parker and keyboardist/bassoonist Donita Bauer.

The duo performed for many years in the St. Louis, Missouri area. The group's out of town engagements have included San Francisco's club 'Piaf's' and The Chicago Cultural Center concert series. The duo The Poor People of Paris recorded two albums; 'Elle se souvient' (She Remembers) 1997 and 'Entre nous' (Between Us) 2000.

Elsie Parker, the group's founder, first became enchanted with the voice and songs of Edith Piaf, and especially loves singing Piaf's early songs. Elsie also performs (in French) songs associated with Charles Aznavour, Herve Vilard, Mireille Mathieu, Michael Legrand, Patricia Kaas, Axel Red, Jaques Brel, Leo Marjane, Eddy Mitchell, Vanessa Paradis, Gilbert Becaud, Serge Lama, Sylvie Bernard, and Charles Trenet, as well as performing her own original material.

Elsie Parker has traveled to Paris, France to perform on French television's 'La Chance aux Chansons'. Pascal Sevran, the host of the show, dubbed her: 'Une chanteuse originale!une vedette.

' ('An original singer!a star.

')Elsie has also performed as vocal soloist and clarinet soloist with orchestras in Missouri, Illinois and Florida. Elsie owns an entire library of orchestrations for her songs in French and English.

Elsie is an extra clarinetist for the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra as well as a tenured member of the St. Louis Municipal Opera Orchestra (The MUNY) as clarinet/saxophone/flute doubler.

Elsie is a member of the St. Louis FOX Theater Orchestra, the Kevin Kline Awards Show Orchestra, The Crusell Quartet, Trio d'anches, and Trio Eclectique.

Since 2000 The Poor People of Paris has grown from a duo to a quartet with some personnel ...
