(12 Customer Reviews)
Aaliyah's debut paved the way for a legion of teen-aged female R&B singers, including Brandy, Monica and 702. Aaliyah is no kid, though; she sings with a maturity that belies her age. Much about her life has changed, but she remains a mature young lady who sings about the ups and downs of true love experiences on this follow-up record.
Obviously a trained singer, Aaliyah glides easily between vocal ranges. Her soft style is more refined than the over-exaggerated riffs of other R&B songstresses. As on her first album, she pays tribute to the Isley Brothers, this time with "Choosey Lover." She adds more old-school flavor with her remake of the Marvin Gaye classic "Got To Give It Up."
Engineers include: Jimmy Douglas, Pat Dilett, Ben Garrison.
Personnel includes: Aaliyah, Tavarius Polk (vocals); Rodney Jerkins (rap vocals, various instruments); Slick Rick (rap vocals); D.J. Simmons (acoustic guitar); Michael J. Powell (guitar); Daryl Simmons (keyboards, drum programming); Freddie Washington, Ronnie Garrett (bass); Paulinho da Costa (percussion); Timbaland, Missy Elliott, Xavier Harris, Demetrius Hart, Pierre Heath, Tann (background vocals).
Producers include: Timbaland, Kay-Gee, Darren Lighty, Vincent "V.H." Herbert, Craig King.

Rolling Stone (5/13/99, p.76) - Included in Rolling Stone's "Essential Recordings of the 90's." Q (10/96, p.153) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...With her smooth, sweetly seductive vocal firmly to the fore, she works through a set of predominantly slow and steamy swingbeat numbers, all clipped beats, luxurious melodies and dreamy harmonies..." Vibe (10/96, p.133) - "...Aaliyah's voice is tender--slightly stronger than [Janet] Jackson's anemic falsetto, but with the same pop appeal....The hip hop-inspired production is solid and supportive..." The Source (2/97, p.86) - "...ONE IN A MILLION resides on a different plane than the legion of sophomore attempts that produce only one or two gold singles....Aaliyah is ready to showcase her mature side. Her best songs are about relationship woes..." Aaliyah One In A Million Songs | 1. | Beats 4 da Streets (Intro) |

| | Shakira She Wolf CD (2009)
One In A Million CD music
$12.95 Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as cuckoo as she is carnal. And for as sexy as Shakira is -- crucially, her music is sexy too -- what really gives She Wolf its bite is her inspired nuttiness, how she laments that Matt Damon's not meant for her, and wishes her ex-lover ...

$11.39 Art imitates life, yet some say it's vice versa. Regardless there comes a time when art moves all by itself. W.A.S.T.E.L.A.N.D.S. (Wisdom Articulates Serenity Throughout Entities Living Allah's Nurturing Divine Science) exemplifies this universal occurrence with their dynamic sound on their 2nd LP entitled Rules of Evolution. On Rules, the Midwest trio delivers 16 songs with their sophomore release. This diverse effort is brought with precise lyrics over a melodic tantrum of eclectic beats. As you may imagine from the album's descriptive title, the group affirms to make creative waves in the steady water of music. "If you think about it, Rules of Evolution is the framework that every artist should follow. The first rule is that there are no rules" explains Augury, the silent wordsmith of the group. " The formula to music can only revolve so many times until it spurs out of control and finds another space to orbit. We're the next sun waiting for the planets to catch up!"On "W.A.S.T.E.L.A.N.D.S.", the collection's first song, the group passionately reflects on the circumstances guiding them to make music. Interwoven between each verse is an open dialogue between the members in which they take turns introducing themselves for the first time to each other. They rhyme with raw emotion about the rocky paths of life. "It's an open-hearted song that makes us think of how everyone struggles and how the strong overcome the odds to complete their aspirations."The struggles of being a hip-hop group and the contradictions of fame were the motivation for the song "S.E.L.L.S". For 4-minutes the group pulls the listener through their perspective of hip-hop. "We wanted to take the redundant lies in hip hop out, and replace it with the true experience that matters at the end of our day". Rules of Evolution is arranged with a collage of producers from across the U.S. and other countries including Australia. Despite incorporating a number of beatsmiths, the album flows smoothly and effortlessly from one cut to the next as each song arrives ...
