Armstrong Alumni All-Stars album
$14.55 A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. This superior trio set with the great bebop pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Jacques Schols, features Brown at the top of his form. Other than his own "Smog Eyes" and the lesser-known "Trane's Slo Blues," all of the tunes are familiar bebop standards, but Brown, O'Brien, and Schols uplift and infuse them with fresh ideas. Among the more memorable selections are "Trane's Slo Blues," "Lester Leaps In" and "Lover Come Back to Me." ...
| | Frank Wess Quartet CD (1960)
Armstrong Alumni All-Stars CD music
$8.75 Frank Wess has long been one of the most underrated flautists in jazz, but it's his primary instrument on this CD reissue of a Moodsville LP recorded in 1960. With fine accompaniment by piano master Tommy Flanagan, bassist Eddie Jones and drummer Bobby Donaldson, the leader's lyrical chops are evident in Alec Wilder's rarely performed ballad "It's So Peaceful in the Country." The light Latin setting of "Star Eyes" initially spotlights Flanagan's elegant piano, with the rhythm switching gears as Wess works his magic on flute. Flanagan alone introduces the dreamy interpretation of "But Beautiful," while Wess will melt any heart with his gorgeous flute solo. Wess is best known for his swinging tenor saxophone, heard on the richly textured "Gone With the Wind," a spacious "Stella by Starlight" ...

| | Santi Debriano Circle Chant CD (1999)
Armstrong Alumni All-Stars music CDs
$14.29 Panamanian bassist Debriano utilizes many influences, including his Afro-Latin heritage. There are hard samba and latin-jazz threads easily recognized, but the other worldly violin work of Israeli born Miri Ben-Ari sets this project apart from other salsa, world music or jazz recordings that incorporate rhythms and melodies from distant places. The uplifting opener "Mano Y Mano," in a trio setting with Brazilian pianist Helio Alves is followed by the ultimately tuneful Duke Pearson evergreen "Is That So?" with vocalist Valtinho Anastacio. The romantic violin of Ben-Ari folds with Debriano's arco bass on "Prelude To The Cyclical Night," while Chick Corea's melodicism is suggested during "Cosa Otra," kicked along by the astounding drummer Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez (he shows up on six tracks.) The highlight is a unique version of the Duke Ellington/Billy Strayhorn soul melter "Isfahan," the violinist tugging at our heartstrings ...

$14.49 Few bands have so artfully and appealingly blended pop, R&B, jazz and world music over the past few decades as this East L.A.-bred ensemble, Hiroshima, which enters the new millennium with a set that draws on everything from old-school soul to Les McCann to the Japanese traditions so dear to its heart. Heads Up will no doubt market this as a smooth jazz project, but only a few tracks are middle of the road enough to truly qualify. The best of these, the lilting and inspirational "Believe," ...
