| | Gene Kardos & Joel Shaw, Vol. 2 CD Gene Kardos Discography of CDs
Although the early '30s found popular music dominated by commercial dance orchestras and mundane singers, there were some exceptions. The recordings of Gene Kardos' orchestra are certainly exceptions, for the group is surprisingly heated throughout most of the performances on this CD (all but two of which date from 1932). None of the soloists are too well-known (trombonist Pete Salemi comes the closest), but the band is quite strong, with exciting ensembles and purposeful solos. Dick Robertson has harmless vocals on most of the numbers, and the many highlights include "Business in F," "Some of These Days," "Business in Q," "Dinah," and "How'm I Doin'." Hot jazz from an obscure but worthy ensemble. ~ Scott Yanow
Kardos & Shaw's group was an important part of a small number of depression era bands whose musical styles led way to the swing era. Volume 2 in this 4 volume series features the band's Crown recordings (Crown is the short-lived label that introduced the

| | Serah Senegal Moon CD (1997)
Gene Kardos & Joel Shaw, Vol. 2
$11.39 On her fourth album (not counting seasonal releases), Serah continues to produce lush recordings of atmospheric ballads, suggesting an American expatriate Enya singing with a Midwestern twang rather than an Irish lilt. This highly produced album (with Dire Straits producer Neil Dorfsman behind the board) is the artist's version of Graceland, merging her simple, folky melodies with African instrumentation, music, and vocals. This makes for an odd juxtaposition, as the backup singers alternately wail in their native languages and join Serah in her sensitively sung, poetically vague lyrics full of references to nature, romance, music, and France (where the album was recorded). As usual, this singer-songwriter's sincerity and seriousness of purpose are undercut by her preciousness and pretentiousness. ~ William Ruhlmann
For some, the eyes are the mirror of the soul. For Serah, it's her voice. Her music is ripe with emotions, both intense and subtle, that flow through the lyrics, melodies and rhythms - all the bounty from an artist blessed. "I love the whole creative process," says Serah, who's an exceptional painter, as well. (Her painting of a pair of harvest gold angels in the CD art of Late Harvest is a gift unto itself.) "Very often, when I've finished an album, I take a couple of deep breaths and I'm all set - I want to do another one. I'm always listening for a key of inspiration. I write a song and decide that it will be the theme for an album."Authentic in all aspects of her life, Serah truly brings the world to world music. A resident of the breathtaking mountains of California, she has also lived in France and Africa."I'm always loving ...
| | Sarah Lee Guthrie Exploration CD (2005)
Gene Kardos & Joel Shaw, Vol. 2
$18.99 When your last name is Guthrie, people are going to have certain expectations about your music, but Sarah Lee Guthrie (Arlo's daughter) and her husband and musical collaborator, Johnny Irion, have managed to make an album that speaks to her personal heritage while possessing a strong aural personality of its own. Exploration is a collection of songs filled with the easy charm and home-truth honesty of postwar folk music, and even boasts a new tune by family friend Pete Seeger, as well as originals from Guthrie and Irion that confront war, poverty, and other social ills with a gentle but firm insistence. But Guthrie and Irion also display a stronger musical backbone than their semi-folkie ways might suggest; Exploration was produced by Gary Louris of the Jayhawks in collaboration with engineer Ed Ackerson, and Louris brought along several of his bandmates to play on the sessions, so it's no surprise that the album displays some of the twangy élan of Tomorrow the Green Grass or Sound of Lies. But it also has a playful campfire singalong quality that's ...
