Using a 60s Milton Glaser-type cover illustration, this purported to be a retro album. In reality it was another extremely fine XTC album, their ninth in a series of classy, offbeat pop exercises from the musically fertile brain of Andy Partridge, who hated touring and loved to stay at home as a reclusive pop star. This is probably their best album and features Partridge's most complete and satisfying song. "The Loving" and "The Mayor Of Simpleton" are both excellent compositions, but they pale against the exceptional "Chalkhills And Children." On this, Partridge celebrates that his home (the nearby chalkhills) and children keep him sane and well-grounded against the possible excesses to which he would succumb as a touring popster.
24-bit remastered reissue of 1989 album. 15 tracks including 'The Mayor Of Simpleton'.
All tracks have been digitally remastered using 24 Bit technology.
XTC: Andy Partridge (vocals, guitar); Colin Moulding (vocals, bass); Dave Gregory.
Q (7/01, p.139) - 5 stars out of 5 - "...A masterpiece....a rocking, modern psychedelic experience which Oasis might want to consult some time soon..." It has a little bit of everything. It's got two(minor)hit singles, and some great album cuts. Maybe an uninitiated listener would want to start with one of XTC's greatest hits packages, but anyone who is familiar with XTC's catalog wouldn't be disapointed. Standout tracks are The Mayor Of Simpleton, King For A Day, and One Of The Millions.

THE PATRIDGE TAKES FLIGHT After the jaw droppingly brilliant Skylarking XTC were finally back in a position of power - lots of American record sales, glowing reviews and a record company back on side.
They chose to build on the success of their previous record by sticking to the Beatles/Beachboys hybrid but this time around added a more commercial sound and a harder edge to many of the songs. As always this is the Andy Partridge show. Mayor Simpleton is as perfect an XTC single as they ever released, Hold Me My Daddy, Pink Thing and Miniature Sun are a trio of stunning trippy pop songs. Chalkhills and Children is a wonderful homage to the Beachboys and Moulding's perky King For a Day gave the band a big radio hit in the states.
Lyrically AP is in a different league to most of his contemporaries and, much like the Beatles reputation was built on Rubber Soul and Revolver, XTC's lasting musical legacy comes from Oranges & Lemons and pastoral Skylarking. It's not quite as good as its predecessor - Across The Antheap and Poor Skeleton Steps Out just don't cut it - but the imagination and whip smart arrangements (stand up Dave Gregory)are near perfect.
The perfect, harder edged companion record to Skylarking - which i guess was always the idea. Submitted by hippymusicman (Boston, UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
XTC wasn't kidding about oranges and lemons Since they had some great tunes on this CD, and a few klunkers, they titled it right. The 1st 7 songs are pretty much awesome, especially The Loving, probably my favorite XTC song ever. They run a gamut of styles, with psychedelic yearning and lust, to XTC pop new wave, to Moody Bluesish melancholy and Pink Floydish madness, musically and thematically. It's worth having for the great stuff, then hit the skip button on just 2 or 3 songs. Submitted by Andrew M. (Santa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Oranges & Lemons CD music
$11.59 XTC's fourth album showed the full flower of their two-guitar lineup, begun on the previous DRUMS AND WIRES. Perhaps their most powerfully rocking work, the songs were no less compelling live. Unfortunately, as touring began in support of the release, leader Andy Partridge's long-standing stage fright blossomed into immobilizing panic, forcing the band to permanently retire from the stage. Their palette was continuing to expand sonically and Steve Lillywhite's production made the most of every towering beat and rhythmic nuance. Several singles were drawn from the record and charted in Britain, most notably the dazzling "Respectable Street" and "Towers Of London." BLACK SEA marked the close of the band's first era and stands as one of their peak works, filled as it with the stunning and unmistakable flavors that are the band's ...

| | XTC Mummer CD (1983) Remastered
Oranges & Lemons album
$11.59 Having fully settled into their retirement from touring, this was XTC's second album since leaving the stage for good. With none of the songs having developed in live performance, their studio inclinations were given full range to go where they might. MUMMER opens with the African rhythms of "Beating Of Hearts," with things then immediately turning intimate and pastoral as Colin Moulding's "Wonderland" drifts in like a falling leaf. Andy Partridge ...

Oranges & Lemons CD music
$11.69 All songs written by Andy Partridge except "My Bird Performs," "The Smartest Monkeys," "War Dance" and "Bungalow" (Colin Moulding).
XTC's NONSUCH falls somewhere between the high-polish shine of ORANGES & LEMONS and the pastoral reverie of SKYLARKING. The album also marked the end of the band's dealings with their original label, the beginning of protracted legal maneuverings, and a seven-year gap in releases (which ended with APPLE VENUS VOLUME ONE in 1999). The generous total of 17 songs was also the result of the three-year recording gap preceding it. Included are ...
