German remastered reissue features the bonus tracks "Ring Ring" (1974 US Remix), "Waterloo" (Swedish Version), and "Honey Honey" (Swedish Version).

ABBA's second album, titled after their breakthrough single, which won the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, shows how the Swedish foursome was already starting to outgrow the confines of the chirpy bubblegum with which they originally made their name. Super-catchy songs like "Waterloo" and "Honey Honey" abound, but composers Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson seem to be taking cues from greats like Lennon and McCartney and Brian Wilson, slipping febrile, inventive tunes like "What About Livingstone" and "Suzy Hang Around" in amongst silly but entertaining trifles like "Sitting in the Palmtree" and "King Kong Song."

Meanwhile, "Hasta Manana" shows the first glimpse of the fascination with Latin music that would lead to songs like "Fernando" and, much later, the Oro and Mas Oro compilations. Overall, WATERLOO shows that ABBA was well on their way to the brilliance of their later career as the decade's foremost purveyors of commercial pop.

24 bit digitally remastered reissue of the Swedish group's second album (1974), featuring the hits 'Waterloo' (#6) and 'Honey Honey' (#27). 11 tracks total. Other 9: 'Sitting In The Palm Tree', 'King Kong Song', 'Hasta Manana' 'My Mama Said', 'Dance', 'What About Livingstone', 'Watch Out', 'Gonna Sing You My Love Song' and 'Suzy-Hang-Around'. Includes three bonus tracks, 'Ring Ring' (US Remix 1974), 'Waterloo' (In Swedish) & 'Honey Honey' (In Swedish). Polar. 2001.

Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Jon Astley.

Recorded at Metronome Studio, Stockholm, Sweden in 1973 & 1974. Includes reissue liner notes by Carl Magnus Palm.

Waterloo Music Review

Customer Waterloo Reviews

Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) 4.5 stars

4 stars ABBA without melancholy
This early album from ABBA has a more carefree sound overall than later titles, such as The Visitors. The group had not completely settled itself by the time the Waterloo album was released. Each track has a unique feel. Somehow you can tell that ABBA produced the music in a different environment than more typical groups of the era. The two early hits sung in Swedish are a nice bonus.

Not quite the soundtrack to the Swedish foursome's film debut, ABBA: The Movie (directed by respected Swedish filmmaker Lasse Hallestrom), THE ALBUM combines several songs from the movie, including the deliriously bouncy hit "Take A Chance On Me" and the dramatic "The Name of the Game," with three songs from Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Anderson's never-completed musical The Girl with the Golden Hair. These three songs are among the band's most intriguing, with "Thank You for the Music" serving as the band's unofficial theme song and "I Wonder (Departure)" one ...

Principally recorded at Polar Music Studios, Stokholm, Sweden in 1980. Includes reissue liner notes by Carl Magnus Palm. SUPER TROUPER is ABBA's seventh--and next to last--studio album, and one of their most artistically satisfying. The album's chart-topping singles include the propulsive title track, "Lay All Your Love On Me" and the bittersweet anthem "The Winner Takes It All," which many rank with "Dancing Queen" and "S.O.S." as one of the Swedish foursome's masterpieces. The rest of the album continues the more reflective, adult themes explored by its predecessors, VOULEZ-VOUZ and THE ALBUM. It's difficult to separate the downcast melancholy ...

Love & Affection: Best Of
Joan Armatrading Love & Affection: Best Of CD  (2003) Germany; Remastered

Waterloo CD music
CD $22.09
This is a two-disc, 39-track anthology of favorites and rarities by British singer-songwriter Joan Armatrading. This is the way a Joan Armatrading best-of collection should be assembled in the first place. The numerous single-disc compilations never came close to being representative of her achievement as a recording artist. Culling 43 tracks over eight years and 11 albums is even better in many ways than issuing an Armatrading box set. All of the expected material from the early years is included on disc one, such as "Cool Blue Stole My Heart," "Travel So Far," "Dry Land," "Down to Zero," "Love and Affection," "Help Yourself," "Woncha Come on Home," "Show Some Emotion," "Willow," "Barefoot and Pregnant," "Bottom to the Top," "You Rope You Tie Me," "Your Letter," and many more, including "The Flight of the Wild Geese" from the soundtrack to the film. It covers Armatrading's prolific period from 1975-1979, where a lot of old hippies, now upwardly mobile professionals seeking mellow escapes from their relentless and often ruthless pursuit of "the good life," got off the bus and remained stuck, listening only to her early records along with those of the Jacksons, Eagles, and James Taylor. The only problem with this is that Armatrading was just beginning to gain a confidence that led her to become really adventurous, taking huge chances with both her songwriting and production styles in the 1980s. She became a pop singer whose lyrics were anything but pop and whose music expanded the boundaries of pop to include reggae, jazz, and slippery folk music. Admittedly, the results were sometimes erratic, but were never, never less than utterly compelling. Disc two features all four tracks from the excellent How Cruel EP, including the reggae soul-drenched bluster of "Rosie," the title track, and "He Wants Her," with its dubbed-out drums and snaky guitar slinking through her sensual vocal. Eight cuts from the Me Myself I album represent the vast majority of it; it also marked Armatrading's first true rock & roll outing. She had heard the late-'70s music from England and Jamaica -- as well as the Lower East Side of New York -- and was affected by it. She didn't try to make punk rock or new wave music, but she let its freedom enter her songwriting consciousness and open it up. As she hung out with producers like Richard Gotteher (Robert Gordon, Mink DeVille, and Lou Reed) and Henry Lewy, rock and roll became Armatrading's chosen vehicle of expression. By the time she made her bravest recordings, Walk Under Ladders in 1981, The Key in 1983, and Track Record with Steve Lillywhite (U2, Ultravox, Psychedelic Furs, etc.) in 1983, the ...

One Bright Sign
Epigene One Bright Sign CD  (2001)

Epigene is a solid, Brit-rock influenced pop band that owes a strong debt to the blue-eyed soul of Level 42, Paul Weller, and Paul McCartney. Guitarist/vocalist Sean Bigler has a crisp guitar attack not unlike a pre-13 Blur's Graham Coxon and delivers his vocals with an assured clarity the harkens back to the Fixx's Cy Curnin. Significantly, Bigler has a knack for writing story songs with a personal bent that nonetheless express universal truths. On "Lonely Together Forever," a witty portrait of convenient love, Bigler sings, "Bitter Rogers, Fred Despair afraid of dancing solo/At first a desperate affair no love from Cupid's arrow." This, combined with Epigene's ability to marry their more modern rock impulses with an uncanny sense of R&B makes for an invigorating listening. Case in point is the brilliant "You Bring Out the Best in Me," a reflective, keyboard-driven number that could work equally well on both a Jamiroquai album as a Gene release. One Bright Sign is a stellar, if somewhat derivative debut that showcases the band's '70s AOR mentality. ~ Matt Collar Epigene is a word used to describe a formation occurring just under the surface of the earth; like a crystal found in bedrock. Epigene can also describe the music and lyrics of Seattle based songwriter Sean Bigler. His songs contain a lyrical depth and melodic sophistication rarely found among ...
