| | Funky Collector No. 12 CD
FUNKY COLLECTOR VOL. 12 features 12 remastered, extra-long hits from Skyy, Komiko, Five Star and others.
If you can excuse the ridiculous graphic design, the extensive Funky Collector series -- released by Active Music, under the French wing of Universal -- does an excellent job of tying together well over a hundred overlooked and often unfairly neglected funk and soul singles from the '70s and '80s. The majority of the tracks appear in club-oriented extended lengths, making the discs ideal for DJs and retired clubbers. It's an awesome series, but good luck tracking it down. Taana Gardner's "Heartbeat," Evelyn "Champagne" King's "Love Come Down," Steve Arrington's "Feel So Real," 5 Star's "Let Me Be the One," and David Joseph's "You Can't Hide (Your Love From Me)" are featured on the 12th volume -- one of the best of the series. ~ Andy Kellman

| | Joshua Kadison Vanishing America CD (2001) Import
Funky Collector No. 12 album
$13.95 Joshua Kadison's lyrical ballads follow in the footsteps of Billy Joel and Elton John and speak of a disappearing American innocence.
Joshua Kadison's third album sees him revisit the familiar windswept vistas of his first two records. Nothing on Vanishing America is quite as memorable as his first hit, "Jessie," but Kadison's country-troubadour eye for characters and narratives remains intact. So does the voice, which still uncannily resembles Elton John's. On the downside, Kadison slips into cringe-inducing schmaltz one time too many. Vanishing America is just too chock-full of sugary-sweet, cheese-rich story songs to be really enjoyable. Like "Carolina's Eyes," which rips off Jack Nicholson's lines from As Good as It Gets: "I see the better man she makes me want to be." Elsewhere, on the Latin-tinged "El Diablo Amor," Kadison makes like a latter-day Barry Manilow. For the most part, though, he is, as billed, ...

Funky Collector No. 12 songs
$18.55 Principally recorded at The Hit Factory, New York between January 1978 and January 1979.
Digitally remastered by Robert Fripp and Brad Davies (1989, Marcus Studios).
Easily Robert Fripp's most pop-oriented solo album--not that that's saying much--1979's EXPOSURE is also probably the best non-King Crimson or League of Gentlemen album of his career. Using guest vocalists Daryl Hall, Terre Roche, and Peter Gabriel, all of whom Fripp had produced albums for in the preceding year, Fripp's usual tape loops and fiery guitar solos are placed in recognizably song-oriented contexts for the first time in his solo career, and some of these, notably Hall's "North Star" and "You Burn Me Up I'm A Cigarette" and a new version of Gabriel's "Here Comes the Flood," are remarkable.
Between the songs, Fripp alternates the sort of tape-delay guitar instrumentals he would later dub Frippertronics and oblique spoken-word found-tape passages not unlike those used by Brian Eno and David Byrne on MY LIFE IN THE BUSH OF GHOSTS. EXPOSURE is a fascinating, endlessly remarkable album.
Robert Fripp's only proper solo album, Exposure, has a tortured history that reflects everything Fripp loves about the creative process of making music and everything he despises about the music industry in microcosm. Fripp had walked away from music in 1974, following yet another dissolution of King Crimson and the mounting headaches of fame, management, and record companies. He returned to music in 1977 at the request of David Bowie and Brian Eno to play "some hairy rock guitar" on Bowie's Heroes, and these sessions allowed Fripp to regain contact with his creative side and a new album was planned. Working with an incredibly wide range of musicians (including Daryl Hall, Peter Gabriel, Tony Levin, Eno, Terre Roche, and former members of King Crimson), Fripp recorded an album with the working title The Last Great New York Heartthrob. Then, things got ugly. Hall's management (Tommy Mottola) said that Fripp could only use two of the seven tracks with Daryl Hall's vocals unless the album were co-billed to Fripp and Hall and released on Hall's label, RCA. ...
