A 20-track, 63-minute compilation named in honor of the Zombies' Odessey and Oracle, A Single Odessey collects all of the single and EP tracks from Velvet Crush's first 11 years. The chronological progression brings the listener through their sweetly jangly power pop early days that culminated in their excellent debut album, In the Presence of Greatness, to the country-tinged middle period of Teenage Symphonies to God, and then to the harder-edged material from the latter half of the '90s. Heard in bits and pieces like this, however, the progression sounds less like stylistic and personal development and more like aimless genre-hopping. That said, A Single Odessey has plenty of goodies to offer, particularly an excellent set of covers -- including impressive takes on Teenage Fanclub's "Everything Flows" and a previously unreleased version of Gene Clark's "Elevator Operator." Paul Chastain and Ric Menck's attempt at the theme song for Tom Hanks' That Thing You Do, written and recorded with Mitch Easter, is another gem. This is probably not the best starting point for the Velvet Crush novice, but fans will find plenty to enjoy. ~ Stewart Mason

In late 1999, the Dutch label KonKurrent invited Minneapolis band Low into an in-house studio to record one of the label's near-legendary In the Fishtank sessions; bands have two days to record between 20-30 minutes of all new material of their choosing. Also touring at the time were Low's pals, the Australian instrumental dynamos the Dirty Three. Velvet Crush's first and best album was mistakenly lumped in with the then-predominant shoegazer aesthetic upon its release in 1991, thanks to its British release on the shoegazer-central Creation label and the occasional washes of sparkly electric feedback and creamy-smooth harmonies that settle over some of the songs. The Velvet Crush's fifth studio album starts off not with the usual chiming rush of loud electric guitars but with a rolling piano line and a gently plucked bass. The duo behind the band, Paul Chastain and Ric Menck, have drastically revamped their trademark power pop style and stripped back the teenage wall of guitars to reveal a softer, more adult heart. There is still the occasional chiming guitar, like on the most Velvet Crush-sounding track, "Don't Take Me Down," but most of the songs are based around piano or acoustic guitar. The vocals are also a lot less excited than usual as Paul Chastain seems to have relaxed a bit and has never sounded better.
