This two-fer from Collectables features a pair of out of print LPs by Bruce Springsteen's saxophonist Clarence Clemons: Rescue and Hero, originally issued on Columbia Records in 1983 and 1985, respectively. Highlights among the 17 tracks include the Springsteen-penned "Savin' Up" and a duet with Jackson Browne, "You're a Friend of Mine," which are pleasant, but not essential. ~ Al Campbell

Rescue/Hero
$7.39 First out of the gate with a new band after the English Beat's acrimonious fracture in June 1983, General Public was the first post-punk supergroup, gathering the Beat's Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger, the Specials' Horace Panter, and other veterans of the U.K. ska revival. (Mick Jones, freshly booted from the Clash, was originally announced as General Public's lead guitarist; although he left the group very early on to start up Big Audio Dynamite and doesn't appear in the album photos, his guitar does appear on nearly all of the album's ten tracks.) Frankly, All the Rage could quite easily have been the fourth English Beat album, as it's a clear continuation from 1982's Special Beat Service. The ska sounds are largely absent, replaced by a mixture of catchy Brit-pop -- someone in the group is clearly a fan of both the Beatles and Elvis Costello & the Attractions -- and occasional ...
| | Byrds Younger Than Yesterday CD (1967)
Rescue/Hero
$7.59 Recorded in 1966-67. Includes liner notes by David Fricke and Johnny Rogan.
Released in April 1967, months before the Summer Of Love, YOUNGER THAN YESTERDAY was proof that The Byrds had already graduated from their fascination with the psychedelic "scene." "Eight Miles High" may have introduced the general public to the counter culture's interests and fascinations, but this song cycle found The Byrds reluctant to rest their faith in either the growing movement they helped bring together, or the art form that was the movement's voice.
The sonic lessons they'd learned still infused many of the tracks. ...

| | Mike Bloomfield Super Session CD (1968) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Rescue/Hero
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on ...

| | Miles Davis Aura CD (1989) Japan; Remastered
Rescue/Hero
$26.09 In 1984, as his covers of tunes such as "Time After Time" exposed him to a new generation of pop fans, Miles Davis participated in one of the most ambitious recordings of his career. Trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg created several themes related to the composer's perception of Miles' field of musical colors--his AURA, so to speak--and Miles performed it with a Danish studio orchestra in Copenhagen. Clearly influenced by Miles' collaborations with Gil Evans, AURA reflects the trumpeter's profound influence on European schools of jazz, and showcases some of Miles most searching, exploratory solos of the decade.
A huge orchestral chord and screaming electric guitar define the general tonality of ...
