One of the lesser-known stops in the illustrious career of Judy Garland is likewise one of her most beloved by enthusiasts of all ages. GAY PURR-EE (1962) is a full-length animated feature highlighted by voice-overs and vocals featuring Garland (Mewsette) and Robert Goulet (Juane-Tom) as a pair of Parisian felines. Interestingly, it was not Disney Studios who created GAY PURR-EE, but rather Warner Brothers' Chuck Jones and United Productions of America. Not only did the primary cast act out Jones's screenplay, they sang a host of memorable compositions by none other than Harold Arlen and E.Y. "Yip" Harburg, the duo responsible for the score to THE WIZARD OF OZ (1939) some two decades earlier. By this point Garland's career was on another ascent. She had just won five Grammies for JUDY AT CARNEGIE HALL (1961) and had been nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Supporting Actress category for JUDGMENT AT NUREMBURG (1961). Garland's confidence is evident throughout, especially on the enchanting ballad "Little Drops of Rain," the happy-go-lucky "Roses Red, Violets Blue," and the achingly poignant "Paris Is a Lonely Town"--any of which could easily stand up against her voluminous cinematic repertoire. By 2005, it had been nearly eight years since Adrian Belew had unleashed an all-new solo studio effort. That's not to say he wasn't busy, though, as he toured/recorded with both King Crimson and the Bears during this time. And in the process, he became quite friendly with two of rock's top players -- Primus' Les Claypool and Tool's Danny Carey -- who happened to be major Belew fans. As a result, Belew invited the duo to play on several tracks on Side One. But be forewarned: they do not appear on the entire album, which is a shame, because the two best tracks -- "Ampersand" and "Writing on the Wall" (the latter of which is a fierce funk-rocker, quite reminiscent of early-'80s-era King Crimson) -- are the ones that contain this stellar lineup. This is the third CD by Fredrik Soegaard in the Leo Records catalog. This time Fredrick plays electric guitar, MIDI fractal and Eventide H3000 while his partner Hasse Poulsen plays Guild Jumbo guitar with some prepared objects and effects. "...And We Als These two form a guitar duet with a twist, to say the least. Fredrik Soegaard, who has released a few albums with his Soegaard Ensemble on Leo Records, is best known for his MIDI guitar and computer algorithms set-up. Hasse Emil Poulsen, who has a discreet yet impressive track record in free improvisation, relies mostly on a regular guitar, in this case a Guild Jumbo, which he might prepare with various objects. On this studio session, he also adds effects, although sparsely. The pairing of Soegaard the looping soundscapist and Poulsen the acoustic improviser works surprisingly well. And We Also Caught a Fish consists of a single, 65-minute piece (split into eight indexes for the listener's convenience). The two guitarists go through several mood swings. The music evokes at times Robert Fripp's soundscape music, David Torn and Hans Tammen's solo albums, and Fred Frith and Henry Kaiser's collaborations. ...
