Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst has a growing stable of talent that is building a track record of amazing successes; first with the wildcard explosion of Staind and then with the signing of melodic alt-rockers Puddle Of Mudd to his Flawless label. It's frightening how well the songs on COME CLEAN stick with the listener immediately. "Control" couples a sleaze-meets-Tool middle eight with STP-flavored guitar crunch. The single-worthy offerings "Nobody Told Me" and "Blurry" burn their way into one's consciousness with the soon-to-be-signature octave-unison vocals of Wes Scantlin.
Former Eleven/Chris Cornell drummer Greg Upchurch brings seasoned chops to the table, especially in "Basement" and "Out Of My Head." The lovesick parody of "She Hates Me" is destined for movie soundtrack infamy, even if it owes a great debt to early Suicidal Tendencies material (the chord progression could have been lifted from "I Saw Your Mommy"). COME CLEAN closes with the Soundgarden-meets-Jane's Addiction "Piss It All Away," the clearest evidence that Puddle Of Mudd are disciples of 90's rock, to great compliment.

All of the songs on the CD are great. So, if you are interested and like their song: "Never Change," then I suggest strongly that you buy this CD because I know you will not be disappointed :)

Hearing this CD made me a fan of this group, especially after hearing "She Hates Me" and "Blurry". Whoever likes it hard and heavy ought to check this CD out. Put it on and crank up the volume!

Ok, I don't own this album but I have heard some of the songs off it. They are extremely bland, uninspired, formulaic and just bloody awful. People should realize that grunge is dead and no one now can ever capture the image Nirvana, Alice in Chains (best band in the genre), Pearl Jam and Stone Temple Pilots had. These manufacture wannabe "nu" grunge band just don't have the dirty sound the real grungers had. This band is trying to sound like all the real grunge bands but they are just extremely watered down versions of them. The guitar riffs are very boring and they are so easy to play, a beginner guitarist could play them too, the drumming is even more boring, the lyrics are very teen angsty and the vocals are AWFUL! It honestly sounds like he's straining with a sore throat and coughing up phlem all over the mic. Eachtime these guys try to make their song's "harder", they just use that intensely annoying wall of sound theory that ruins the songs and makes them unbearable to hear. The wall of sound is being oversued in modern rock n roll and should be eliminated. Only a few people have gotten it right but it still should go away. Hopefully, when this band runs out of whiny teen angst lyrics and realize they are ripping off other bands, they will break up. If people in bands are past their teens, they should stop writing about the past because that happened so long ago that it doesn't matter now and you should be happy with what you got now instead of being a pussy. Alot of lyrics you hear today sound like someone's d*mn journal entry, as Neil Fallon of Clutch put it and he is right. Clutch is how modern rock n roll should be done. Listen to them and you will never want to hear Puddle of Mudd ever again.

Within two seconds of hearing them sing, there are some singer/songwriters who you know you're going to hate. Their styles are so affected or goofy that it doesn't matter how pretty the melodies or how clever the lyrics, you're not going to be able to enjoy them. Then there are others whose vocal affectations are equally distracting, but who hold your attention anyway because you can tell there's something deeper beneath the surface, and maybe even something that justifies the vocal goofiness. Piers Faccini's vocal style can't really be called goofy, but it's definitely on the willful side -- quavery and often on the thin verge of falsetto, his singing voice sometimes comes across like a frailer approximation of Tom Waits. The similarity may not be entirely accidental, either; on this, his U.S. debut album, he opens with a song that features scratchy violin, junkyard accordion, a creaky vocal, and a stunningly gorgeous melody -- the recipe for about half the songs Waits has written. But Faccini is also capable of surprising you, as he does on "Sharpening Bone" (which starts off lightly funky and then lapses into a sort of dubby acoustic reggae) and on "Sons and Daughters" (which features something that sounds startlingly like prepared guitar along with something that sounds startlingly like a fiddle being slowly eaten by a dinosaur). When he goes for minimalist ethereality, the results are hit ("Come the Harvest") and miss ("Days Like These"). Hits outnumber the misses on this album. This guy bears watching. ~ Rick Anderson
