Once upon a time, a Texas label called Watermelon released country music that was as honest as the latest fare from Nashville was plastic. When Watermelon went belly up, a number of artists like the Derailers and Don Walser were out of luck. Now, thanks to the Texas Music Group, a few of these gems are being reissued. Western swinger Walser cut his first album, Rolling Stone From Texas, for Watermelon in 1994. This debut still shimmers, whether Walser is yodeling, singing an original, or offering a fresh take on Jimmie Rodgers' "California Blues." There's a fine version of Tennessee Ernie Ford's treatise on the dangers of courtship, "Shotgun Boogie," and an authentic rendering of Stan Jones' classic, "Cowpoke." Marty Robbins' "Don't Worry (About Me)" and Willie Nelson's "Three Days" also make noteworthy appearances. The arrangements vary a bit from song to song, but Western swing staples like pedal steel, lap steel, dobro, and lots of fiddle are prominent. Walser's fun and self-assured vocals on "(The Party Don't Start) 'Til the Playboys Get Here" convince the listener that he isn't just mimicking an old style: he loves and personifies western music. Like Don Edwards, Walser also convinces listeners that older styles of country can be just as relevant and enjoyable today. Rolling Stone From Texas is a fine introduction to Walser and a fine introduction to contemporary Western swing. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr.

Rolling Stone From Texas music CDs
$10.65 In the year 2000, the Wire magazine picked this spaced out gem from Native American folksinger and activist Buffy Sainte-Marie as one the "100 Albums That Set the World on Fire." Released in 1969, and now on CD, as of 2001, it was reissued as an import on 180 gram vinyl with its original glorious artwork and package. Interestingly enough, it's a record Sainte-Marie doesn't even list on her discography on her website. It doesn't matter whether she cares for it or not, of course, because Illuminations is as prophetic a record as the first album by Can or the psychedelic work of John Martin on Solid Air. For starters, all of the sounds with ...

Rolling Stone From Texas CD music
$18.85 Blaine Reininger's third solo album had a bit of a difficult birth, coming off a split with the band that had been supporting his earlier work. Byzantium's indeed very much a solo effort as a result, with Reininger handling everything aside from saxophone and a couple of extra guitar parts. Unfortunately the change did not result in one of his better releases. On the one hand it's got some truly fine Reininger moments on it, perhaps notably ...

| | Ruby James Desert Rose CD (2008)
Rolling Stone From Texas songs
$18.99 Desert Rose.... Something earthy and unexpected, that brightens the landscape with its deep tones and originality. Something that surprises and tantalizes you with its beauty and roots firmly planted in a sometimes-harsh terrain. Something you happen across by chance and will never forget. Desert Rose... That is artist Ruby James. From a li'l bit of here and a l'il bit of there, Ruby James follows in her grandfather's footsteps as a nomadic traveler with a passion for music. From her earliest years, Ruby sat with him as he played guitar and sang Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings tunes and told her trying tales of life on the road that took him from living "Grapes of Wrath" style in the back of dusty wagons during the Great Depression, to the dark bunkers of Iwo Jima in WWII. In those quiet special moments, a wanderlust singer-songwriter, inspired and undaunted by the harsh realities and rewards of a life on the road, was born. Ruby burst onto the music scene as a solo artist in 2006 with the release of her EP Sweet as Sin, immediately captivating critics and crowds, with moxie and sophistication and a kick ass stage show, leaving a swarm of heady fans in her wake. Her sultry yet sweet voice tempted, teased and rocked premiere venues from Central Park in New York City, Hard Rock Live, Austin's Continental to LA's Viper Room and The Whiskey. Whether it be on her own or sharing stages with Jackson Browne, Jane Weidlin, Soul Asylum, 7Mary3, War and Fastball, Ruby James is often compared to legendary icons Stevie Nicks, Sheryl Crow and Chrissy Hynde. Humbly aware, she is committed to and succeeding at blazing her own unique trail through modern rock. Desert Rose, the new album from Ruby James, promises the journey will continue with her gutsy brand of sweet grit and sultry style and a timeless return to the roots of music. For it she unites with producer John Avila (Oingo Boingo, Reel Big Fish) and string virtuoso, Rene Reyes (Act of Faith, Green Car Motel and film and soundtrack producer for Collateral, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Saving Silverman, Man in the Chair), with whom she co-wrote all but two of the tracks. The album also features acclaimed artists Mitch ...
