This little-known Hank Crawford LP was a transitional record between his long associations with Kudu and Milestone. More straightahead than his Kudu dates, the program is highlighted by the Harry "Sweets" Edison blues "Centerpiece," "Gee Baby Ain't I Good to You" and Slide Hampton's "Frame for the Blues." In addition to Crawford (who splits his time between his soulful alto and a Fender Rhodes electric piano), guitarist Calvin Newborne (the brother of pianist Phineas) has plenty of solo space. Crawford provided the arrangements for a five-piece horn section and the results are soulful and pleasing. ~ Scott Yanow Calvin Newborn Centerpiece Songs | 1. | Centerpiece | $0.99 | |

Centerpiece album
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the over-the-top phasing he lavishes on "You Don't Love Me." The only real disappointment here is that Stills, a far better singer than Kooper, never opens his mouth.

| | Everette Harp First Love CD (2009)
Centerpiece album
$15.09 On FIRST LOVE, contemporary jazz saxophonist and composer Everette Harp moves deeper into the space he addressed on 2007's excellent MY INSPIRATION. Produced by George Duke, the meld of acoustic and electric instruments here is perfectly balanced. Melodic and harmonic structures are much more complex and don't always fit the C-jazz cookie-cutter mold. Check his original "The Council of Nicea," one of the most satisfying things here. Harp's tenor is accompanied by James Genus' acoustic bass, and some spot-on breaks by Terri Lyne Carrington, a beautiful bluesy, hard bop trumpet solo by Michael "Patches" Stewart, and Lenny Castro's hand percussion. Directing the band is Duke on Fender Rhodes with help from the exquisite if understated electric guitar work from Dwight Sills. The ballad "Before You Leave" follows suit with Carrington providing elegant brushwork. These are pretty basic straight-ahead numbers. This is not to suggest that there ...

| | Mike Mainieri An American Diary CD (1994)
Centerpiece album
$13.79 In addition to a few group originals, vibraphonist Mike Mainieri performs some unusual pieces with his quartet (Joe Lovano on tenor, soprano, and alto clarinet; bassist Eddie Gomez; and drummer Peter Erskine) on this CD, including two folk songs and selections by Leonard Bernstein ("Somewhere"), Frank Zappa ("King Kong"), Aaron Copland ("Piano Sonata"), Roger Sessions ("Piano Sonata No. 1"), and Samuel Barber ("Overture to the School for Scandal"). The pianoless quartet (which displays a lot of versatility by Joe Lovano) turns all of the music into creative jazz. The most interesting aspect to this thought-provoking disc is how difficult ...
| | Freddie Ravel CD (2001)
Centerpiece CD music
$12.49 Freddie Ravel's debut for the GRP label is packed with great musical personnel and features the excellence that one obtains as a result of many years of collaborating with such great artists as Peter White, Quincy Jones, Madonna, Earth, Wind & Fire, Al Jarreau, and Tony Bennett. Freddy Ravel is beautiful, romantic, alive with fiery Latin rhythms and resplendent with lush flamenco guitar stylings that are sure to melt the hopeless romantic in everyone. The pianist, composer, and arranger is accompanied by a stellar lineup of guest stars including Ardeshir Farah and Jorge Strunz, Eric Marienthal, Marc Antoine, and Peter White. Freddie Ravel wrote all of the compositions except for two which were co-written with Peter White. Opening with "Echo de Amor," Freddie Ravel and his labelmate acoustic guitarist Marc Antoine immediately send soothing, alluring messages to their listeners, ones filled with beautiful melodic phrasings that you won't forget anytime soon. It is the kind of song that you tune into and keep inside. The descarga "Samba Mundial" is alive with the Brazilian rhythms honed from his association with Sergio Mendes. Rafael Padilla provides excellent rhythmic elements from an assortment of percussive instruments while Ravel and Michael O'Niell are astounding with solos set against the dynamic In & Out Horns. This descarga is sure to please. The radio hit, "Sunny Side Up," is a smooth, sunny groove filled with piano stylings that reveal Ravel's jazz and classical prowess in an array of arpeggio. One of the most beautiful songs on this CD is "Bolerino Bella," a lovely, romantic, ballad filled with lush orchestration, harmonious guitar from Michael O'Niell, and piano melodies by Ravel. Freddie Ravel is filled with pure romance, an energetic bonus "Love Is in the Air," a Spanish mix titled "Dame la Razon," great Latin dance numbers, contrasting riffs for frontline instruments, and it is a sure winner for Freddie Ravel. ~ Paula Edelstein

| | Carl Saunders Be Bop Big Band CD (2002)
Centerpiece songs
$15.95 Trumpeter Carl Saunders has been leading big bands on a part-time basis ever since he was a youth, including in Los Angeles since 1984. This 1999 recording was the first set by his impressive orchestra. Although several writers contributed charts to the CD (Larry Dominello, Bill Rogers, John Boice, John Hall, and Mike Barone, plus two from Jackson Stock), it is the five arrangements by Herbie Phillips that set the mood for the rewarding project. The late Phillips, a close friend of Saunders from his Las Vegas years, was a talented trumpeter and arranger/composer who loved bebop. There are many highlights through this stirring set, including "Compilation" (a run-through on rhythm changes with solos from Saunders, altoist Lanny Morgan, trombonist Bob McChesney, tenor saxophonist Jerry Pinter, and pianist Christian Jacob), a medium-tempo interpretation of "Emily" (with trombonist Andy Martin), "I'm All for You" (based on "Body and Soul"), "Some Bones of Contention" (featuring ...
