"Clint Eastwood" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group.
What do you get when you combine Damon Albarn, singer for Britpop superstars Blur, with hip-hop producer Dan The Automator? Gorillaz, silly! Albarn takes a busman's holiday and avails himself of the opportunity to take the kind of sonic risks one would be unlikely to find on a Blur album. This isn't hip-hop or dance music per se, though "Rock the House" is a bona-fide party rap tune, and Dan The Automator adds plenty of hip-hop elements and trip-hop beats throughout.
Ultimately, GORILLAZ is occupied by Albarn's arch, twisted pop vision filtered through a dizzying array of electronic sounds and studio manipulations. There are some interesting stylistic experiments, too, as on the Latin-style "Latin Simone," which features a guest vocal from none other than Cuban legend Ibrahim Ferrer, and "Slow Country," which, despite its title, is an excursion into the atmospheric land of dub reggae. This is a far cry from Britpop--imagine Blur in a sonic kaleidoscope. And then try in vain to imagine either of the Gallagher brothers attempting anything close to this.
Recorded at Gee Jam Studios, Jamaica.

Gorillaz Music Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) A little hip hop, a little rock, a little everything This Cd is a little of everything for those with an appreciation for all styles. Its a little, hip hop, a little rock, and a dash of an 80's feel... Its a great disc throughout. Submitted by a reviewer (Grand Rapids, MI) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The best CD I've ever bought!!! Ok. I don't like all of the songs on this CD, but that is only because of the amazing variety of genre. From rap to rock, hip-hop to reggae/jazz. I would say I like about twelve songs on this CD. Even though there are eighteen songs(69 minutes of music!), how many CDs can you say that about? I recommend this CD to anyone who likes one song from the CD, because if you like one, you'll like several. Submitted by Pyronoid (Arkansas City, Ks, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
It's alright.... Well I absolutely loved "Clint Eastwood", as for the rest of the Cd, they don't really stick with that same style, which happens to be their best, so I didn't really get into the rest of it, but it was alright. If you liked Clint Eastwood and were thinking you'd like the CD, I would suggest getting the single. Submitted by a reviewer (Sacramento, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Every song on here is just... This is a great album. I don't like rap, but somehow they get me to like their style. What is there style? Who knows- there are elements of punk, electronica, rap, rock... even a song in latin(?). Truly an excellent album. Submitted by Daniel (My computer, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Purchase Gorillaz CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Beck Sea Change CD (2002)
Gorillaz album
$12.59 Though 1998's MUTATIONS was the closest Beck had come at the time to conventional (read: non-ironic) troubadourisms, he quickly declared the album a detour and swiftly followed it up with the Prince-influenced about-face of MIDNITE VULTURES. It comes as something of a surprise, then, that he should focus his subsequent efforts on an unprecedentedly earnest singer-songwriter album like SEA CHANGE, which finds him purposefully peeling away his multiple levels of irony. Trumpeted in the press as a post-breakup album, SEA CHANGE has been called Beck's BLOOD ON THE TRACKS, and it's true that he'd never been anywhere near this emotionally naked before.
Sonically, he seems to have (at least momentarily) laid aside his R&B/hip-hop ...
| | Gorillaz Demon Days CD (2005)
Gorillaz CD music
$11.45 On the second full-length Gorillaz outing, DEMON DAYS, mastermind Damon Albarn (Blur) parts company with Dan the Automator and opts for a collaboration with Danger Mouse, the DJ most renowned for his GREY ALBUM mash-up of the Beatles' WHITE ALBUM and Jay-Z's BLACK ALBUM. Although this dynamic collection isn't a radical departure from its predecessor (Artwork by Jamie Hewlett? Check. A small army of guest stars? Check.), DEMON DAYS injects the party-ready Gorillaz aesthetic with a brooding sensibility that's immediately apparent on the zombie-movie-sampling "Intro." In fact, a morbid sentiment abounds, as evidenced by many songs, including "Last Living Souls" and "Every Planet We Reach Is Dead."
Even though Albarn has weighty issues occupying his thoughts, he hasn't forgotten how to boogie, as revealed by the slinky "Kids with Guns" ...

| | Tom Waits Glitter And Doom Live CDs (2009) Digipak
Gorillaz CD music
$13.84 Glitter and Doom Live, a double-disc set, marks Tom Waits' third live effort in his nearly 40-year career, each one summing up his career to the point of its release. The first, Nighthawks at the Diner issued in 1975 on Asylum, is regarded by many as one of the greatest live albums of all time. The second was Big Time, released during his tenure at Island in 1986. The musical performances on disc one of Glitter and Doom Live were culled from Waits' historic sold-out tour of the U.S. and Europe. He compiled and sequenced the set himself, intending to make them sound like a single show. The material leans, understandably, on his recordings with the Anti label. There are stellar performances here, such as "Get Behind the Mule" from The Mule Variations, "Trampled Rose" from Real Gone, and a haunting version of Leadbelly's "Fannin Street" from Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards, to mention just three of the 17 cuts here. But he goes back to his Island albums too. For instance, there are completely re-visioned readings of "Lucky Day" and "I'll Shoot ...
| | Saw Doctors Live In Galway CD (2004)
Gorillaz music CDs
$11.65 Recorded live at The Black Box Theatre, Galway, Ireland on July 30, 20003. Includes liner notes by Leo Moran.
The Saw Doctors' co-leader, singer/guitarist Leo Moran, writes in his liner notes to the band's first live album that, while fans consistently prefer their concerts to their albums, he had opposed releasing a live disc, which he felt couldn't hope to match the experience of being at one of their shows. Giving in, he offers "Apologies for some of the imperfections....There's Davey [Carton] laughing in the middle of singing a good few songs, the backing vocals aren't what they should be a lot of the time and all that kind of stuff." While charmingly self-deprecating, his remarks are not inaccurate; Live in Galway is hardly a polished performance, even if that's only to say that it is closer to being a real live album (i.e., one without studio overdubs) than most. That is less of a problem, however, than that the performance of a show before an enthusiastic hometown crowd ready to sing along on every song exacerbates the group's local (at the expense of its mass) appeal, a worry for a band still trying to replicate its Irish popularity overseas while writing songs about local concerns. "Green and Red of Mayo" refers to the flag of the Irish county of Mayo, not, as an ignorant American might imagine, to some sort of sandwich, and is sung in colloquial language in Carton's heavy Irish tenor, which suffers slurring as well as chuckles. But even if an international audience may have trouble figuring out what the songs and some of the fuss are about, the Saw Doctors' energy and commitment translate just fine, as does the attractive sound of its Celtic-tinged folk-rock. Live in Galway is the CD version of a show also released as a DVD, ...
| | Roy Tyler Three Way Calling CD (2004)
Gorillaz songs
$14.29 Described on the liner notes as "swamp gospel," the former lead vocalist for the Gospel Hummingbirds' first solo album is a rousing success. With 30 years of experience, Roy Tyler's vocal chops are in fine form, but his band's name points to the changes on this release. His new direction adds a tough, wiry R&B approach to spiritual music. Duets with Raphael Saadiq and the Blind Boys of Alabama's Clarence Fountain represent both extremes, as Tyler walks the tightrope between spirituality and commercial concerns. Both the Blind Boys and Robert Randolph have successfully made a similar jump, and with Robert Cray keyboardist Jim Pugh's sympathetic production, Tyler nails the groove. Except for a few traditionals, some Saadiq tunes, and a rearranged cover of Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down," the album's most obvious stab at the mainstream, the majority of the songs are originals. The title track is a snappy combination of upbeat blues and soulful gospel, laying sanctified lyrics over the riff often used for "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl." Covering O.V. Wright -- a Cray favorite -- in "Four & Twenty Elders" is a logical move, as Wright also successfully joined soul and gospel. Pugh ...

| | Jackie Greene American Myth CD (2006)
Gorillaz songs
$11.89 American Myth is singer/songwriter Jackie Greene's true debut for the Verve Forecast label. Sweet Somewhere Bound, issued in 2005, was actually recorded for the Dig Music label (where his previous albums appeared) in 2004 and licensed by Universal. American Myth is a much more complex affair than anything he's done previously. The list of players is impressive: from Davey Faragher and Peter Thomas to Greg Leisz and Steve Berlin (who did a fine job producing this set), to name a few. This is the collection that should finally dispel those pesky Bob Dylan comparisons. Greene has grown into his American roots style honestly -- by becoming a better musician. And while there are those fans who would claim that his lyrics may have suffered, his craft as a songwriter has improved immeasurably. "Hollywood" will be the novelty single because of its swaggeringly infectious blues hook, but "So Hard to Find My Way," with its shimmering B3, horns creating a loose, good-time groove underscored by a warm bass line, a strolling banjo, Greene's dobro, and his deft lyrical imagery, all of which make for a better tune. His changeup is fine, too, as evidenced by "Just as Well," which comes immediately after with its introspective acoustic guitar and the dobro and hand percussion intro. This is the kind of summery sidewalk tune that the guys in Sugar Ray would have killed to have written. The accordion fills and Greene's voice, which is so utterly cool and in the pocket, captures ...
