An unexpectedly delightful collection of traditional Christmas carols, 1966's NOEL is one of a handful of Joan Baez albums arranged and produced by Peter Schickele--better known as comedic classical performer P.D.Q. Bach--during the mid-'60s. Even more than 1968's baroquely-orchestrated BAPTISM, NOEL sounds more like a Peter Schickele album than a Joan Baez album. Nearly a third of the 17 tracks are instrumentals on which Baez doesn't even appear, and although her voice is front and center throughout, Schickele's arrangements largely use it as merely another instrument in his ornate arrangements. A German-sung version of "Ave Maria" and a delicate rendering of "Coventry Carol" are particularly beautiful.
When Joan Baez began recording and performing during the late '50s and early '60s, she carved out a niche for herself as a remarkable singer of traditional music. In 1966 she released Noel, an album of seasonal songs notable for its variety and the fact that she sung two selections in German. One would expect to see "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" and "Deck the Halls," but Baez adds lesser-known gems like "Ave Maria" and "Coventry Carol," along with instrumental versions of "Bring a Torch, Jeannette, Isabella" and "Adeste Fideles." The arrangements, while not unusual for a holiday album, were something new for a Baez album. Lutes, violas, harpsichord, strings, and wind instruments provide a classical setting for Baez's lovely soprano. In this setting, her voice becomes more formal and mannered. The 2001 reissue of Noel also includes several bonus tracks, including a French version of "Away in a Manger." Baez's fans will probably be split on the quality of the album. Fans of her early traditional albums will find these arrangements and stylized vocals miles away from folk music; fans of Baez's pure soprano who never concerned themselves with genre purity will find Noel a must-have album for the holidays. ~ Ronnie D. | | Joan Baez 5 CD (1964) Reissue
Noel music CDs
$11.45 Released in 1964, as Joan Baez was cementing her role as the queen of the folk revival and palling around with Bob Dylan, her imaginatively-titled fifth album was a bigger mainstream commercial success than her earlier releases. Opening with a stately cover of Phil Ochs' excellent "There But For Fortune," the album moves effortlessly from the Leadbelly-style folk-blues of "Stewball" to a graceful version of Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe" and beyond. Despite Baez's public persona as the doyenne of protest music, most of these 12 songs are basically apolitical, with only ...

| | Joan Baez Baptism CD (1968)
Noel album
$12.25 BAPTISM features Joan Baez singing and reading poems and prose by Walt Whitman, Federico Garcia Lorca, James Joyce, William Blake, Arthur Rimbaud and others, to the accompaniment of scores by Peter Schickele.
Probably Joan Baez's artiest record, and therefore one not widely appreciated by many folk traditionalists, 1968's BAPTISM is partly traditional folk songs and partly readings and musical settings of poetry and prose by authors like Walt Whitman, Federico Garcia Lorca, James Joyce, William Blake and Arthur Rimbaud. The whole is arranged and produced by Peter Schickele--better-known as classical-comedy composer/performer P.D.Q. Bach and host of the public radio program Schickele Mix--and in many ways, this is much more a Peter Schickele album than a Joan Baez album. Baroquely over-orchestrated and exceedingly precious, most of BAPTISM works in spite of itself, largely due to the wit of Schickele's arrangements. Traditional ...
| | Thelonious Monk Thelonious Himself CD (1957)
Noel CD music
$8.29 Digitally remastered by JVC using XRCD (Extended Resolution Compact Disc) technology.
On each of his first three recordings for Riverside Thelonious Monk included a solo piano presentation, and for many listeners these were the highlights of each recital. And so it was decided that Monk's fourth Riverside recording, THELONIOUS HIMSELF, would be composed entirely of solo interpretations...well, almost.
Those accustomed to the effusive stylings of keyboard masters such as Art Tatum might be baffled by Monk's approach. Monk is essentially a minimalist, a virtuoso of color, accent and space, who relinquished the technical trappings of his craft in pursuit of a specific aesthetic vision. Strip away the more extravagant aspects of Tatum's art--the showy runs, the ornate grace notes, the profuse modulations and asides--and you're left with an advance harmonic thinker, firmly rooted in the rhythmic pulsation of stride, not unlike Monk's "Functional." The main difference being that where Tatum compulsively fills space, Monk (like Basie) establishes a masterful sense of implication, so that listeners finish phrases in their own minds.
Like a great actor finding heretofore obscure layers of meaning in a familiar soliloquy, Monk ...

| | Bonnie Bramlett It's Time/Lady's Choice CD (2004) (Import) Remastered; Australia
Noel album
$19.99 Raven Records has an uncanny knack for reissuing the right lost rock, country, and R&B titles. This pairing of Bonnie Bramlett's second and third solo outings after she and Delaney divorced is a case in point. Originally issued on Capricorn, both of these recordings -- dating from 1974 and 1976, respectively -- were produced by the great Johnny Sandlin of Allman Brothers fame. There is no attempt to reach the pop charts with these; they are both solid rock and R&B outings with a cast of musicians that would make anybody's head spin. On It's Time, Gregg Allman, Butch Trucks, Jaimoe, and Chuck Leavell from the Allmans all lend a hand, as do Eddie Hinton, Clydie King, Randall Bramblett, and a cast of two-dozen others. On Lady's Choice, Dickey Betts and Barry Beckett join the fold as well. Bramlett's voice is in fine form through this two-fer, doing singular interpretations of songs such as Hinton's "Cover Me" and "Where You Come From," as well as a funky version of the Jackie Wilson signature soul nugget "Higher & Higher" (before Rita Coolidge's revival read of it), Ivory Joe Hunter's "Since I Met You Baby," and Gregg and Janice Allman's "Oncoming Traffic." Her performance is right-from-the-heart ...
