This Christmas jazz release was released in Japan by BMG. The excellent swing tenor Harry Allen (whose tone is reminiscent of Stan Getz) is heard in a quartet with organist Larry Goldings, guitarist Peter Bernstein, and drummer Jake Hanna. Sticking mostly to familiar Christmas songs, Allen swings his way through such tunes as "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer," and "Winter Wonderland," with John Pizzarelli taking a guest vocal on "Blue Christmas." This is a warm and accessible album that has its appeal beyond the jazz audience, although it will be difficult to locate in the U.S. ~ Scott Yanow
Recording information: Nola Studios, New York, NY.
Personnel: Harry Allen (tenor saxophone); John Pizzarelli (vocals); Larry Goldings (organ); Peter Bernstein (guitar); Jake Hanna (drums).

Christmas In Swingtime album
$13.75 On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). The opener, "Monk's Mood," for example, features the ...

The Count Basie Orchestra has been on the move since the mid-1930's; even the Count's death in 1984 couldn't stop his band from keeping on; thus, ON THE ROAD is an especially appropriate title for this 1979 release. Producer Norman Granz had the band record in a studio before an invited audience; the result ...

| | Joe Williams' Finest Hour CD (2001)
Christmas In Swingtime CD music
$12.65 This is basically the budget version of the more comprehensive Every Day: The Best of the Verve Years anthology. While Verve could have easily compiled a better 60 minutes by sticking to Williams' '50s recordings with Count Basie, Joe Williams' Finest Hour shoots for the broader picture, from Williams' pre-Basie big-band work from the late '40s to his swingin'-senior-citizen days of the '80s and '90s. (Still, this is not exactly a retrospective, as there's a 30-year gap between Williams' last Verve session with Basie and the next record he cut for the label, 1987's Every Night). Overall, Finest Hour is a decent sampling of Williams' many stylistic hats -- swinging, scatting, balladeering, and blues-shouting. On half of the tracks, he fronts a big band (either Basie's or Andy Kirk's); on the other half, he sings slow blues or pop ballads (ranging from sublime to syrupy) with a small combo. Not a bad "finest hour," but if you're looking for a finer one, try Blue Note's The Best of Joe Williams. ~ Ken Chang
Recorded between 1946 & 1990. Includes liner notes by Brian Priestley.
