An impending collision with a runaway star signals the destruction of Earth, as mankind puts all its hope in one spaceship that will carry the last humans to safety. The balance between human and planetary drama is excellently maintained as the film builds to its fascinating, unforgettable climax. A scientist concocts a frightening theory about two planets rotating around each other in outer space. He believes that one of the orbs is destined to crash into planet Earth, thus destroying life as we know it. But he also has a plan. The astronomer teams up with a sympathetic pilot, and the two construct a sort of modern space ark. They hope it will save a lucky group of humans by flying them all to safety on the surface of a surviving planet. In this beloved George Pal (WAR OF THE WORLDS)-produced sci-fi classic. A dying star hurls through space on a collision course with Earth, with no way to stop it. The hope of the planet's citizens lies in the hands of pilot Dave Randall (Richard Derr) and astronomer Doc Hendron (Larry Keating), who will supervise the construction and flight of an interplanetary craft that will carry a handfull of humans to start the race anew on another planet. Academy Award nominations: 2, including Best (Color) Cinematography. Academy Awards: Best Special Effects. Shot in Technicolor.

When Worlds Collide Movie Review Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) Classic End of the World If you are one of those George Pal movie buffs, this is a definite for your collection. Obviously dated today and would be an incredible remake but for now good old fashioned fun. My only regret is the animation of the new world at the end. But some great effects of the era and and old fashioned fun. Submitted by michael (Auckland, New Zealand) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Classic Sci-Fi "When Worlds Collide" is one of the best Doomsday movies from the 50's. This DVD looks great. The George Pal production hits all the right notes. Lets hope that the Spielberg remake scrubs up as well in 55 years. Submitted by littleteddys (Brisbane, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
When Worlds Collide vs. Deep Impact If you are a science fiction buff, you will really enjoy "When Worlds Collide." The movie is dated but I think it is one of the things that makes it really charming. So charming that it was re-made as "Deep Impact", Morgan Freeman. Take a look at both movies and you will see what I mean. By the way the color of this George Pal production is spectacular. Submitted by a reviewer (Los Angeles, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
30 Days to Bella Who could possible forget that frantic pace, when seeing the sign counting down until Bella hits the earth? In my mind, what makes it Science Fiction, isn't the topic, it's that mankind today isn't capable of pulling together for the survival of a few. Too much of a "ME" world. A Pioneer Classic in Sci-Fi Disaster Films The first time I saw this film I was just a kid, about 9 or 10 years old. (I'm 41 now) and at that time it blew me away. I forever remembered the famous "lottery scene" and how only 40 people could live, and go aboard the spaceship and travel to the moon that was detected orbiting the planet that was about to collide with earth. It stuck in my mind of the sorrow I had in the end of who was left behind. It made a big impression on me then in '73 or '74 when I saw it. I never did get to see it again until now, after finding it on-line here at CD Universe. I sat through it again over 30 years later, and though much antiquated in its special effects (it did win the Academy Award in 1951 for best special effects) it still contains the weight of one of the best classic sci-fi disaster films ever made, and was one of the true pioneers of sci-fi natural disaster films. Here you'll see it all: earthquakes, tidal waves, a planet moving on a collision course to smash into earth, human drama, and a few likable characters. I highly recommend this film for classic sci-fi aficionados, nostaliga buffs, or those fasinated with films that reflect things that quite possibly could come to pass. When Worlds Collide DVD
$9.69 Beginning with a documentary style that immediately hooks the viewer, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, based on the Harry Bates short story "Farewell to the Master," becomes as much a human interest story as it does a sci-fi B-movie classic. The film soberly depicts the arrival of an alien dignitary, Klaatu (Michael Rennie), who has come to earth with his deadly robot, Gort (Lock Martin), to deliver the message that earthlings must stop warring among themselves--or else. After being shot at by ignorant, panicky military guards, Klaatu is brought to a Washington, D.C., hospital, where he begs a sympathetic but frank Major White (Robert Osterloh) to gather all the world's leaders so he can tell them more specifically what he has come 250 million miles to warn them about. Losing patience, Klaatu slips into the human world, adapting a false identity and living at a boarding house where he meets a smart woman with a conscience, Helen Benson (Patricia Neal), and her inquisitive son, Bobby (Billy Gray). Both mother and son soon find themselves embroiled in the complex mystery of Klaatu, his message, and the government's witch hunt for the alien. Made during the cold war--when Americans ...
