Among the most outspoken voices of the conscious dancehall movement, Sizzla has used his brand of spiritual reggae as a response to the generally bawdy themes of much modern Jamaican music. RASTAFARI, as may be expected, focuses heavily on Rastafarian culture; in particular the subjects of repatriation and black identity. Backed by rough and rugged dancehall rhythms with a distinctive flavor borrowed from Niyabinghi drumming, the music provides the perfect setting for Sizzla to expound his message of positivity.

Comprised of lessons and prayers dedicated to Jah Rastafari, Royal Son of Ethiopia is indeed a religious reggae album. Inspirational vigor is provided throughout the album by Sizzla as the Jamaican singjay uses the will of a Bobo and a slippery tongue to both overcome Babylon and regain Zion at the same metaphoric moment. Despite the radical political flavor of this album's title and the typically slamming roots and dancehall grooves courtesy of Sly Dunbar and producer Philip "Fatis" Burrell, listen carefully to Ghetto Revolution and you'll hear something new. Whereas in the past Sizzla has mainly been content to call down fiery destruction on Babylon, the Pope, homosexuals, and women who are less than wholly devout, here he seems to have softened somewhat. Make no mistake, Sizzla's worldview hasn't lost any of its sharp spiritual edge, but he sounds a bit more forgiving than in the past, offering comfort to those who are suffering ("Jah Will Be There") and inviting -- rather than commanding -- all to share in God's love. An entry from Putumayo's archives, Putumayo Presents: Jamaica makes a stab at covering the vast majority of the styles of reggae available on the island nation. More specifically, it restricts that coverage to the more classic forms (omitting dancehall, hip-hop, fusion, and generally anything involving gun talk and slackness). Essentially everything happening in the reggae scene after the end of the rocksteady movement and up to the death of Peter Tosh is represented here. The album opens with the title track from the Toots & the Maytals album Reggae Got Soul, infusing a bit of American soul into the reggae base. Culture follows with an exposition on the Rastafarian faith and Jimmy Cliff mixes the political realm with the party realm in "Give the People What They Want." Ska veteran Rico Rodriguez adds in a relatively rare reggae instrumental and Joe Higgs, one-time vocal tutor to Bob Marley, tosses in a basic piece of his repertoire. Polio victims Israel Vibration contribute a number and Ras Michael adds in a piece of reggae with a deep connection to the proper nyahbinghi drumming forms.
